The Knights of the Republic - A Mandalorian-esque TPM edit (WIP)
Time

Since it’s supposed to be a single episode from a lost series, you could start with “previously on Knights of the republic” intro with a 30-second montage of things cut from your edit that might still provide some backstory

That’s a really nice idea although I’m not sure what footage I could use as I’m mainly cutting the podrace, some of the political stuff and the Gungan plotline.

The Knights of the Republic - A Mandalorian-esque TPM edit (WIP)
Time

I, like many of you, recently finished the second season of The Mandalorian. With it over I found myself with a sizeable Star Wars shaped hole in my life. So, I decided to start my first ever Star Wars edit inspired by the Mandalorian.

The aim:

To cut The Phantom Menace down to a TV episode length keeping the focus squarely on the two Jedi’s

Objectives:

• Minimise Jar Jar Binks to a nearly mute background character
• Remove scenes that are not centred on either Qui Gon or Obi Wan or develop their narrative
• Remove all reference to Anakin Skywalker who is now known simply as ‘The Boy’ as an allusion to ‘The Child’
• Remove all reference to the prophecy and the midichlorians
Keep run time to 50 mins or less.
• Recreate Mandalorian titles
• Recreate Mandalorian creates using concept art for the Phantom Menance

So far I am roughly 2/3 of the way through producing a work print for this. There are some hefty narrative changes from the theatrical release of The Phantom Menace most notable the Jedi never visit the Gungan city and the podrace doesn’t take place. Full disclosure I love the podrace but it doesn’t serve this edit. This isn’t Anakin’s story, this is the story of two knights of the republic. I decided to call the episode 'Chapter 4: The Boy" as an allusion to Baby Yoda and to Episode IV. It can be imagined as a stand alone episode in a none existent TV series.

Star Wars - A New Score (* on hiatus *)
Time

Thanks DigMod, it was more to get tips on how they removed or reduced the score but I might take you up on that.

Having spoken to Possessed his edit is not presented in 5.1 with discrete channels. It is surrounded encoded, but it’s matrixed 2.0 surround like pro logic or dolby surround. So while it will upmix very well for a surround experience there will be a little bit of bleeding between the channels. Which wouldn’t matter for viewing but it might make editing a bit difficult. I’ll know more once I’ve processed the .iso file.

Hi Digmod, thanks for joining the conversation and thank you for sharing the link. That version is soo good, in fact, in fairly sure it was the first version I heard, certainly it’s the same version my dad has on CD. These days I’m rather fond of this version:

https://open.spotify.com/album/0HLsGkiIn4ifIq062XrOxp?si=0eyHc6hKRkGuRFvjN7K1Fw

It’s a more recent recording of Owain Arwel Hugh and the Royal Philharmonic orchestra. I find the crispness of the brass really to my liking, their version of Jupiter is probably my favourite.

I’m probably going to have to use a few different recordings to be fair. At the moment I’m watching A New Hope in Disney+ with this playing in the background.

Re: TMBTM’s edit I’ll PM them over on FE.org and pick their brains. I was thinking of talking to mredthefed too as I assume they’ll know a thing or two about rescoring a Star Wars film.

I’d watch a fan edit with this as an experiment.

Hi Hal thanks for your input and thank you for all the hard work you’ve put into your edits. I’m looking forward to watching Ascendant soon.

I already know that Mars will be the Empire’s theme but there are six other movements in the suite. I wish to assign each to a character or a theme. The trouble is there are some lovely ethereal peices that have potential to work well for a variety of characters so a little bit of experimenting is required.

My plan for this project at the moment is to cherry pick a a few scenes to test various combinations of character and music.

Another factor I need to consider is which rendition of the various movements I should use. There are different opinions on the matter. https://www.classical-music.com/features/recordings/best-recordings-holsts-planets/

Potentially (almost certainly) I’ll end up using multiple versions of the same movement but since this suite is over 100 years old there are a lot of different interpretations out there.

Are you OK Spuffure? That is a legitimate question, no shade or sarcasm. I’ve not been on the forum for very long but you regularly make these hyperbolic posts. I genuinely can’t tell if this is some sort of a cry for help or whether you’re simply trolling. If it is the former I’d strongly recommend you talk about what’s weighing on you with someone you trust. Perhaps you just want to scream into the void but I’m not sure whether an internet forum dedicated to Star Wars fanedits is the healthiest place to do that. Whatever is going on with you I hope you get the support you seem to need.

Star Wars - Ashes of the Empire (a WIP)
Time

So after giving this some more thought I have a few ideas that could be fun to play with.

Kylo’s interrogation of Poe will me resequenced after Kylo realises that Rey is with Luke.

The structure now looks like this:

Open with the final act from TFA, opening with Star Killer base but removing references to its purpose. Han dies, the base is destroyed, Rey leaves to find Luke.

Kylo goes on the hunt for the rebels and captures ace pilot Poe (TFA intro)

Rey trains with Luke (TLJ)

The first order strike back at the rebels and destroy Leia’s base. The rebels flee. Poe is cut from these scenes. (TFA intro)

Rey and Kylo connect via the force/Snoke (TLJ)

Kylo tortures Poe (TFA)

Rey has her moment and decides to seek out Kylo (TLJ)

The first order locate the rebel fleet en route to Crait. No canto Bight no Poe being repremanded as he is with the first order. (TLJ)

Repurpose Finn rescuing Poe (TFA)

Snoke showdown and Holdo’s sacrifice (TLJ)

Battle of Crait (TFA)

Maybe conclude with Death Star Duel.(TROS)

Star Wars - Ashes of the Empire (a WIP)

Hi Anakin. While I enjoy Jakku the issue I have with it is that it feels too familiar. It’s obviously homage to Luke’s origin story which is fine in and of itself but I don’t want that in this edit. I really like the Last Jedi as it did something different and its core ideas are solid. As for the Battle of Crait it isn’t the conclusion per say. The conclusion is the fact a new status quo has emerged. Kylo Ren is the supreme leader while Rey is quite literally a new hope. I want the edit to reflect the cyclical nature of the force it doesn’t need a conclusion as it is demonstrating the galaxy will constantly be in flux and it ends where we effectively started with A New Hope. The sequel trilogy failed for me because it tried to tie everything up neatly. The edit isn’t a love letter to the past, it is supposed to be a passing of the torch.

Hello and welcome Malthus - what a great idea you have here.

Thanks for the welcome Omni. I whole heartedly agree that TLJ is the best of the bunch if only because it did something fresh. The space chase was a nice idea and I loved grumpy Luke, it felt like a natural progression. Luke literally becoming his version of Yoda

As for the crawl I was thinking about establishing Rey as Leia’s pupil would be the best route to circumnavigate the origin story and there’s is the training footage from TROS if I needed to evidence this.

With Poe I was wondering, could he get captured instead of destroying the dreadnought and then be freed by Finn? Effectively lift aspects of TFA and repurposing them. I feel Poe is more heroic in TFA and in TLJ he’s far more arrogant. I think recording things could show him grow into a hero.

Star Wars - Ashes of the Empire

I’m looking for feedback/input on an idea I’m working. The aim is to produce a standalone sequel movie to the Original Trilogy built using scenes from TFA and TLJ. I want to show the torch being passed from the OT characters to the ST characters and end with a new status quo emerging.

Ideas I’d like to experiment with:

  • Using title crawl to establish Rey
  • Opeing with Han Solo’s death
  • No Star killer base references
  • Truncating TLJ plot to remove Canto Bight completely
  • Reinstating all the additional Luke deleted scenes from TLJ
  • Leia dying in space

I envision the edit being around 2:30 since large sections of TFA are removed as I’m less concerned about the origins of Rey. I wish to keep as much of the Kylo footage. Continuity errors and character placement will be the biggest issue.

The hypothetical narrative is:

Opening on a resistance assault on a First order base (Repurposed Star Killer Assault)
Han solo dying
Rey goes in search of Luke
First order retaliate and destroy Leia’s base
Space chase begins
Luke and Rey
Leia dies
Kylo loses his temper
Snoke order Kylo to return to him
Rey confronts Kylo
Snoke dies
Holdo’s sacrifice
Battle of Crait
Luke passes away

I want to find a way to include Kylo’s interrogation scenes but they hinge on discussions about the map to luke plus dealing with the location/escapes of the characters presents a headache. I’m also not clear how to give Poe and Finn satisfying arcs so ideas are most welcome.

Hey everyone.

I’ve been fanediting for the past six months and have so far released edits of Thor, Godzilla, Drive and After Earth. Details of those projects can be found over at Fanedit.org. I’m also nearing completion of two further edits:

Valerian - No Love Lost Edition
Trailer: https://vimeo.com/452906433

The Amazing Spider-Man - Radioactive Edition
Trailer: https://vimeo.com/474797545

I was keen to join this community as I’m putting together an idea for a stand alone Star Wars sequel using episodes 7 and 8 as the base and I figured this would be the best place to spitball ideas for it. I’m looking forward to getting to know some more people within the fanediting community and sharing my ideas and edits with you.

Malthus.
