The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Stranger Things is quite childish oriented, like The Goonies, so I’m afraid I don’t see your point. You thought it was a dark and strong characters driven series ? Well, think again. SPOILER ALERT Everydody survives, everything is in order at the end, even the “might be dead” character is implied to be alive. And most of the interactions don’t work at all. Again it’s not a terrible series, just it’s average/mediocre. Maybe too long (8 episodes to tell such a thin story…). That’s being said I still don’t get why you’re talking about youngins/teenage audiences.

I actually laughed in the theater when he takes his mask off to reveal that he’s just some bratty kid. It’s a fantastic moment, gives you the exact impression of him that you’re supposed to have: he’s a wannabe who has very little idea what he’s doing.

I strongly agree. The only difference is that you think this is brillant while I believe it ruins the main menace… and the story as a whole. In ANH Tarkin and Vader are cold and intelligent; in TFA their “young versions” Hux and Ren are so childish that I never believe in the First Order. I just don’t buy it.

“I hate TFA, it’s such a rehash. Also, the main villains are not like Tarkin or Vader, which is also bad.”

I kinda feel like this is what a lot of the arguments against the Disney-era films boil down to.

That’s because you don’t understand my point. Rehash or not, you’ve got to make good villains, which are severely lacking in TFA. Hux/Ren is obviously a Tarkin/Vader rehash for kids (Harry Potter/Hunger Games generation), and a lame rehash, which does not work. Like the plot is an OT rehash, and a lame rehash. Hux reminds me of the villain in Die Hard 4. Hux actor also sucks in his part (powerful speech ? Seriously guys…).

Snoke is a pretty decent evil menace, I thought. Hux is a decent fanatical military officer (not like Tarkin at all) and I’m not sure Kylo is even a villain. He does evil things, but I think there’s enough depth to his character that we might see a change of heart.

Yep I hear you about Snoke, but so far he’s just a Palpatine-bis who basically gives the key of his army to Ren (a still not fully trained and reliable dark side force user) and Hux (a 30 yo kid who does not seem to really know what he’s doing except that he’s driven by a fierce hatred towards the New Republic for reasons we never get to know… or is he just evil because he’s evil, like Palpatine ?) so he’s not that menacing for me, as part of the audience, to care about (or to feel something about that). Ok they destroy the New Republic Headquarters but since we never really know what’s at stake it does not really work (at least for me). In ANH when Tarkin destoys Alderaan we don’t know anything that important to care about this planet, but we care about Leia, Luke and Ben, so we care about Alderaan. If you add one or two scenes to know a few things about the Hosnian system (and I know they did shot scenes they deleted from the final cut), it could have worked. Or even show Leia leaving this planet a few minutes prior its destruction, in order to give a sense of urgency ? Sadly it’s something I need to guess when I watch the movie, not something that’s shown, not even something that’s told.

SAD BEEP

(and from a Stranger things fan, I don’t really mind…)

Don’t like Stranger Things? May Eleven give you a telekinetically-induced bowel movement.

Must admit I was bored to death after 3 episodes. But the cinematographer did a great job, it was nice to watch but quite pointless. Not a very bad tvseries, just not very good imoh (I would give it 4 or 5/10). The fact I’ve discoved Freak & Geeks a few weeks prior to watching Stranger Things didn’t help. As it usually happens, I concur with Hulk on this one (http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/08/31/the-strange-motivations-of-stranger-things).

JEDIT: BTW, now that we have that awesome “they found us” line… should something be done to Maz’s “Those beasts, they’re here!” (at 01:09:30 in the current edit)? Feels a bit funny that no-one informed her about the incoming attack.

I see your point but it seems she does know they are coming, so she just confirms they now are here attacking the castle. But I’m however partially with you on this one: this line is not very good, especially if you consider that Finn was a few hours ago one of those beasts (I still believe it’s a huge error to imply that FO troopers are not serving the ashes of the Empire because they want to but because they are forced to… don’t know if Hal is going to slighly cut a few lines to remove that). I would remove the “Those beasts” while eventually keeping “they’re here!”.

Why would the music need to be changed for the “it’s the first order” scene ?

The Clone Wars cartoon Anakin is so divorced from the PT Anakin- I’m shocked Lucas never noticed.

He is and isn’t at the same time. Lucas was one movie short to show him in a different light. There are actually many scenes in AOTC/ROTS when you get to see the TCW/CW Anakin, but it’s not the majority. At least we’ve got quite good cartoons to complete the “PT puzzle”, with fanedited versions of the movies it even works quite well in spite of flaws that cannot be solved.

I improved it! I fixed the volume dip (thank you ForceGhostRecon), mixed better (thank you MalàStrana) with more tie sounds, and added a new score (thank you Kexikus). There’s still room for tweaks and fine tuning but I think it works much better already! Take a look:

Man, you’re good ! With the new sfx shots the restructure is going to be as seamless as it can be. I might actually want to watch TFA again in this form (and a few other trims will be very much welcome as well).

Yet even so, it has the right to exist. The PT may be awful, but I certainly don’t propose we adopt Lucas’ methods of destroying films we don’t like.

Very true, I agree with this.

Yeah, but we nevertheless do the same as he does regarding film history: when we watch the PT we don’t watch his final versions but alternate ones.
