Violence in Video games a fad?
Time
to me violence in video games and in movies is a fantasy of mine and im sure of many that we all have....

violence means nothing unless it takes place in real life...
violent movies and games are just there to satisfy our hunger..
very much like adult movies are there to satisfy a need... there's no message, they don't influence me to go out and have dirty sex with many women...

i know for a fact that i would never be able to point a gun at another human being unless it were to protect myself or a loved one...
however i always have my matrix/terminator fantasies where i would love to take out a group of bad people with almost every weapon known to man. many would think me crazy to say that, but i know many of my fellow male friends would also agree with me and say they've had those same kinda daydreams.

Maybe we all have that part of us that wants to be an action hero or a superman of some sort.
its all a fantasy.

but is it a fad?
perhaps. I feel the real reason it has gain so much popularity in games lately is simple. technology!
don't get me wrong, i loved playing shootem up games when i was younger, however lately they've raised that bar far and beyond. if you get your hands on the right game with the right hardware you get the most realistic fantasy out there, and there's no real gun involved.

It's about bringing it as close to reality as possible and then stepping back a little.
but thats how i feel.

How Did You Find OT.com?
Time
I totally agree with everything that Jay has said about Bill Hunt and his support for the petition.

I dont know the man personally nor have i ever spoken with him, but as ive pointed out here on the forums many times, he talked the talked on his site about how these movies must be preserved and blah blah blah... when it came down to it he backed out and never looked back. And what does he say now about the new movies that were released?

That its nice to finally have the SW movies on DVD. Ha! I guess all that talk about preserving the originals meant nothing to him. He even goes as far to say in his archieves of his site that a petition would never have helped the cause...
I'd hate to ever be in a war and have him captured by the enemy, without a spine like that he would fold within minutes. If there's one thing i've learned growing up it's stick to your guns. Never give in, and never let people walk all over you.

But now im ranting.

As for The Digital Bits. It was once my favorite site to go to until i realized that they a) rely on rumors wayyyy too much b) when they do report news, its usually a week or two old and then c) they're cover art section is rarely updated and highly incorrect on most occasions.

I've said before and I'll say it again
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.php
and
http://www.dvdfile.com/

are my suggestions!

and thats my 2 cents.

well i agree with you in the respect that you can literally just put in a game and play...
and that is a good thing for many people...

however if you cant set up a game's settings to your preference (no offence intended) you really should not own a computer...

computers have been and always will be a way to cater to your tastes!!
consoles are like it or lump it...
they put what they want in it and then you have to deal with it until they stop producing games for the system...

i was gonna write more on this but i think its really a matter of preference...
i used to be a console junky in the days of the Super NES (best system ever made), but since then have found myself straying away from them, excluding Playstation exclusives, such as Gran Turismo..

but you cant really believe that computer games are losing their audience..

PS - anyone try the demo for Star Wars Empire at War?

for once i find myself excited for a Star Wars game, if your a fan of RTS then check it out!

Nintendo's philosophy on the current state of the industry is spot on, IMO. Cramming graphics chips into a box that supports HD when only like 25% of people with HD are actually using it is NOT innovation. Nintendo is keeping development costs down by not supporting HD, but is giving people tech they can actually use, with WiFi and USB support, as well as that controller that I'm DYING to get my hands on.

*edit* IMO the pc as a gaming platform is all but dead. The pc section at stores like EB and GameStop are almost non-existent.

i am also an avid Nintendo supporter as i feel they are going in the right direction when it comes to making these next consoles next gen...

but I totally disagree with you guys on pc as a gaming platform being dead...
lets all remember that both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are computers inside that nice shiny case...
when it comes to the PC it will always be the number 1 choice for games for games due to the fact that the technology is always evolving and this in turn helps game developers bring their creations to life...
example: Farcry for the pc and then for the xbox...

when you buy a console you are basically buying a 5 year paperweight...
there are no options to upgrade when it comes to a console... so those who are talking about how next gen their xbox 360s are will be the laughing stock in about a year when the power in graphics cards and processors skyrocket... it happens every new console launch...

and when it comes to sections in game stores i seem to find them balanced... and if they seem to dedicate more room to console games i feel its mainly due to packaging... compare a DVD case to a box for a pc game..

there is no doubt that consoling gaming has gained tons of popularity lately but that doesn't say anything about the popularity of pc games...
they will always be the pinacle of gaming and no console will ever change that...

just my 2 cents

i have never seen what is so wrong with window dressing in a movie?
i mean who's to say i want to watch a quick 2 hour movie? maybe i dont want to plot to unfold in such a manner of time that seems unrealistic....
if a movie needs that time or works well with that time then why bother trimming anything?

sure it maybe more convenient for the public, but if your not willing to spend that time to enjoy the film i say dont bother watching it at all...
i like to enjoy every last drop of a movie whether is 4 hours long or a just a quick 1 and a half hours....

hardcore fans of LOTR very much dispised the movies because they did not hold true to Tolkiens writings...
just like us hardcore Star Wars fans dont care much for the PT...

I'm kinda baffled at the numerous people who say they didnt like the movie...
the main complaint being it was too long...
maybe i was more captivated by what was going on not to notice the length...
i mean we all knew it was going to be 3 hours so at least prepare yourself for a long movie rather than coming out and saying.. "man that was too long!"

but like i said people are going to either like it or not...
i think Jackson did a wonderful job on it and it really did exceed all my expectations..

FYI - can anyone smell an extended edition coming?

Well, it's really NOT a love it or hate it kind of movie... I mean, through out my entire post, I mentioned that I half liked it and half disliked it. I said it was right in the middle. So, for me at least, it wasn't a "love it or hate it" movie.

Also, my complaint isn't so much that the movie was too long, it's more the fact that it was much longer than it needed to be. I know those are the same thing, but I guess I'm just trying to emphasize one point more strongly than you are...

Anyway, it's not like I don't enjoy long movies. I just think that this one movie didn't necessarily need to be that long. It felt too forced. It's like the movie was long, just for the sake of being long. I knew it was going to be three hours, but I was hoping that there would be more stuff filling up those three hours. Like I said before, there were just so many parts that didn't add anything to the film at all. There were too many scenes that just had no real reason to be there.

Think of it as having a very large cup, but it's only filled up half way, as opposed to being completely full. So, it's not the fact that the movie was long. It's the fact that there was so little that actually consisted within the lengthiness.

i see what your saying but i think there are only a couple scenes that i feel didnt need to be in there and they were very small scenes at that...
many have said the first 70 minutes leading up to Kong was boring...
well if we never had that time dedicated to the back story we wouldnt know anything about the characters nor would we care about them at all...
i know the original Kong is a classic and all but i mean it had no character development at all... and thats what Jackson set out to change..
i feel he did anyway.. it was a huge improvement over the original...
and i also feel the original was an all action piece... (if you can really call it "action", it was in those days anyway)
i mean what else do you expect from a movie that features a giant gorilla on an uncharted island with dinosaurs??
lol

but i respect your opinion...
different strokes for different folks after all...
im just dissapointed its not getting the recognition i feel it deserves..

This is true. It is the people that made this remake that deserve to die(just kidding). I'm sorry but the 1931 version is a classic. This version will not beat it. Kong was already remade once, if flopped. A third remake is unnecessary. Can't Hollywood think of anything new?

i agree that the first one was a classic and theres no doubt the remake (1976) was a flop...
but regardless PJ version is definatley the last remake...

i mean the first one was a classic but theres not much too it..
i mean it didnt look very nice (but what does at that time) and there was no emotional attachment between Kong and Ann which really did nothing for the climax of the movie...

agree with me or not but this was definatly in need of an overhaul and you can't seriously say that it wasnt a good adaption of the story...

definatly best of 2005!

If he said that to a news reporter, didn't the guy at least say "Oh, ok, how about YOUR movies?". I just wonder how he would react if we asked him about this contradiction. I bet he would cover his ears, and scream "I can't hear you na na na na!!" until you gave up.

Dude....I WAS going to ask him at Celebration 3. I was 2 people away from asking it when they sent us all back to our seats. I was absolutely stoked. I had the whole thing pretty much mapped out in my head. No way was I going to give him an out. I was going to cover the artist's rights thing, his original vision, EVERYTHING. I was out to corner the bastard and make him squirm!!!

Also, they had some girls at the front of the line that I think were fielding questions. So, I came up with a whole bullshit question to tell them (I came up with something about Indiana Jones) and then when I would have stepped up to the mike....I was going to ask the forbidden question.

your my hero!

it was bound to happen...
wanna know how many our Future Shop location had?

20!!
thats it!!
we had over 100 preorders and only 20 Xbox's...

but that's beside the fact...
what im still amazed with is how utterly dissapointing the system is...
these next gen consoles are supposed to be some next generation of gaming... and so far i only see the Revolution as having something so drastically different that it can be called next gen...
the Xbox has pretty graphics.. but you can accomplish that with a high end video card right now for your pc...
and we'll have to see if Sony lives up to its promises in 2006 of if they follow the same route as microsoft....

on top of the mediocre graphics you get with the system... the release of launch titles for the system are sub par at best...
Perfect Dark is the only game to recieve an excellent rating out of the bunch... Project Gotham a close second...
and what else do we get?
a bunch of EA sports games which continue the trend of same boring gameplay mechanics with updated rosters...
pass...
