Fox Home Entertainment have revealed some new details on the Region 1 DVD release of the Star Wars Trilogy due to arrive in separate widescreen and full screen editions on 21st September 2004 with a retail price of $69.98 each. The four-disc sets will present the original trilogy with digitally remastered THX Certified transfers and new English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX Surround mixes alongside the original English, Spanish and French Dolby Surround tracks.

The intention from the start was to replace HUMAN JABBA with a CREATURE JABBA (stop motion animation - like Ray Harryhausen style), in 1976 at the time of filming they hadnt fully decided what Jabba would actually look like, character designs were created, but I guess GL wasn't happy with what was created & the scene was eventually edited from the movie. It wasn't until production of Return Of The Jedi had started that the finalised look of Jabba was achieved.

As to the DVD issue, well, after looking over it, I'm going to have to say the director simply reframed the DVD version for his own personal reasons. Fincher did the same thing with Se7en.
