The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

Another small idea to improve the pacing of the movie : I think slightly extending (4-5 seconds) the shot of Kylo Ren lost in thoughts on the Death Star would help with that. In the cinema, the scene with Han Solo didn’t completely land emotionally for me because the movie didn’t let time to breathe from the previous scene to this one. So here’s a quick mock-up (I didn’t increase the frame rate with interpolation) :

First version is the extended one (I let the previous scene for you to see if it flows well), second one is the movie version. Any thoughts ?

I agree that the BFII footage looks too “gamey”. Besides, I thought one of the main points of adding extra shots to the beginning of the movie was to establish that the scene was happening on Mustafar but in the end, it doesn’t really help with that. The pacing isn’t really improved either so only keeping the TIEs flying over the forest might the best choice here.

By the way, someone (I’m really sorry, I can’t remember who) posted a long time ago this shot of a burning forest :

I feel like the color grade is really coherent with the movie scene . Maybe adding some TIEs flying in this shot could work ?

I think there’s a very small change to the Ahch-To scene that could help implying that Leia knew about Rey being a Palpatine from the start while Luke only discovered it later (when he became a Force ghost or connected himself back to the Force in TLJ).
Just cut the “too” from when Luke says “Leia knew it too”. I think it’s easy to do since Luke says it off-screen.
This way, it implies that only Leia knew about Rey while being alive.

I think if there’s one moment in the movie where we can go “fully epic” with the score and dare to replace JW’s score, it’s this one. But I agree it doesn’t feel earned with the movie as it is. Maybe some ideas floating around here about making it more obvious the sacrifice of Luke Skywalker has sparked a rebellion across the galaxy could help with that. Of course, it would make the arrival of the fleet being the “big” moment of the movie instead of Rey defating Palpatine but it’s not necessarily problematic since the two previous movies had their plots revolving around finding Skywalker to save the day.

I also agree it feels weird pacing-wise to go from total despair to “we’re gonna win” within seconds, so let’s see what Outbound Flight can do.

Otherwise, I don’t think it would be too jarring to return to the classic JW’s score after this scene since the bass-boosted Palpatine’s lightning comes right after, and it kind of break the whole musical continuity of what happens on Exegol. I don’t know if I’m clear…

Hi everyone !

I’ve been watching the amazing stuff you’re all doing for some time now and I’ve finally decided to join the forum.
I’m beginning with audio mixing and here’s a rescored version of the battle of Exegol, with the rearranged version of the SW main theme by Samuel Kim (I must admit I didn’t ask his permission to use his stuff but we’ll probably have to if someone wanted to implement this in its edit) :

It’s still a little rough so please let me know about any possible improvement.
