From what I've been told the colours of this print are intact. The caps above are from a lossy WMV file and may not be accurate colour wise. Also, the slight magenta is less apparent in the moving image. Anyways, that's why I'm resisting drawing comparisons until the scanning process is complete. It's too early to say.

As for Torsten Kaiser's rough colour correction, did he have an IB tech print in his possession to make the colour correction or just guessing?

In order to adjust from the original intended lighting source (xenon, carbon arc), in which direction does the timing need to shift? 

A quick and dirty dry scan of reel 1 was performed yesterday. The print is dirty, missing some frames, has a lot of wear but the colours are excellent. It will undergo extensive cleaning and then wet scanned, which will significantly improve image quality.

I won't comment on the colours at this time but when comparing reel 1 of the print with the Mondo BD and MGM 4K BD I noticed there is 11 seconds of extra footage of Steven exchanging glances with AE and his son while AE is standing at his entrance.

As shown in the screenshot below there is a Titanus logo prior to the opening credits:

It's inevitable you will be drawing colour comparisons with the various home releases now that I've posted these images.

Just a matter of time. The IB tech will be cleaned and scanned over the next few weeks!

My apologies I've been updating the project thread over at http://amps.boards.net/.

For several reasons I decided not to visually inspect the print and immediately forwarded it for scanning. The print should reach its destination today or tomorrow based on the latest tracking info. 

The individual scanning the print estimates it will take approximately 2 weeks to clean and digitize the print.

I'll update this thread as soon as I hear back.

Sure looks like the 98 DVD now but darker. Did you adjust brightness at all?

Can you post a download link for this vid as well?

Battery acid...piss...same difference. 4K BD is a total fail IMO.

Oh sure. I'll make available to you and people on the OT. Much like you Lil Brutto, its my favorite film and I'd love to watch the version I grew up with again. Once I finish Alien, I will work on it concurrently with Blade Runner (which is a project that will take a while). In testing it seems easy to grade. I would probably grade it to the 98 DVD and tweak it to the 35mm LPP pics that appeared on ebay. I know most would prefer the Mondo but the LPP looked like the old DVD and I like that look. I guess your IB TECH will tell the true tail of how TGTBATU looks.

I'd love to see your version of the IC. You're taking a different approach and I like what I see based on your rough edit. Also, I have no doubt you'll beat me to it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to make meaningful progress with my project. It will likely progress at a snail's pace for the next couple months.

While waiting for the IB tech to get scanned, I quietly resumed work on my project described on page 1 of this thread.

I still need to address the issues with scene transitions that are described above. I intend to use FCP to deal with the transitions, such as fade in the Mission San Antonio scene as per the pre-extended cut version.

Also, since the picture of the 2003 BD is slightly zoomed as compared to the Mondo BD, I thought I'd try splicing in the 4K BD footage. However, after converting the 4K BD to Prores 422 HQ and using it instead of the 2003 BD, I must say it isn't always a better alternative. An obvious reason is the color timing, but the image also tends to "drift" throughout the film as described by Andrea in another thread:

Ultimately, I'll have to decide which MGM source to use for the splice in question.

Lastly, the 1998 MGM LD audio does not sync perfectly with the 98 MGM DVD, which I found a bit surprising. This is even AFTER correcting for the DVD missing the footage of Blondie holstering his pistol. I will have to manually sync the LD audio to the DVD audio at this point.

I dug out my Criterion CAV LD and checked for you.

At the end of Chapter 13 and beginning of Chapter 14 (auditorium scene) there's a title card that reads, "Smith's Grove, Illinois" followed by "May 1, 1964".

I will visually inspect the print reel by reel to determine its overall condition and for the presence of any unseen footage other than the skeleton shot.

This may take a while but I should have an update by the end of the month.

The print is now stateside.

 1. Ah yes, the bread/knife scene, which is described in the original script and takes place after Betterville camp. The print hasn't arrived yet so we don't know if it includes this scene or any other deleted/never-before-seen scenes other than the skeleton shot. A couple days ago the seller sent an email update with the attachment below saying, "Next. Hard cardboard."

I'm hoping it will be on its way to North America sometime this week.

It's premature to say right now how it will be distributed, but it definitely will be once finished. That's the whole point of this project.

Donations are still trickling in but we still have a way to go to cover the costs of scanning the print.
