Info Wanted: Anyone Planning on making Anamorphic versions using 2006 OUT DVDs?
Time
My need for an anamorphic version is linked to my progressive-scan DVD-player and my 16:9 TV. When in PS-mode, my TV doesn't allow for any zooming on the picture, which means the letterbox image (including the black bars) is stretched to 16:9, resulting in a horizontally stretched image, without the black bars (or the major portion of them) being cropped off. So, I am still trying to decently denoise the image, since I don't want to upscale all the grain (be it fake or not).

Take care,
Greg

The font ist named "Trajan". There is a free font out there named "Episode I", which is fan-made, but it has several issues with letter spacings. So if you want the real deal, try to get Trajan.

I did this as well for my own set, but it wasn't as easy, since I had other audio-tracks on it, as well as some bonus material. Therefore I had to retouch the menus in AfterEffects (clearing out the original menu items, replacing them with my own plus creating new sub-menus) and re-authored the whole thing in EncoreDVD. This way I kept all animated menus and their transitions intact.

I'm not sure, but aren't most of the shots from the 97-SE the same as the 2004-SE, except for the color-corrections? I know some shots have been recomposed, but maybe using the chroma from the 97-SEs and layering the luma from the 2004-SEs on top of it migh work for most of the scenes. This way you get all the image detail from the "restored" transfer, minus the crappy colors.

By the way, here's the first filtered clip (and I still don't think that I've filtered too much... I don't see any detail being lost... the smearing was already present in the source):

And here's the second one:

Could you post a sample shot? (With some arrows drawn on, if it's subtle?)

Unfortunately it's not subtle... especially in motion these artifacts are visible. I'm not sure if they result from the upscale to PAL, but I assume the NTSC-version contains theses as well, as they're to large to be caused by those few extra lines added:

One question, Would there be a benifit to different noise-profile for different sceens? I think I read that
the amount of grain varies from sceen to sceen. If I made different noise-profiles and de-noised per sceen rather than the
whole movie at once, would that be worth the extra effort?

I'm pretty sure that it would yield better results... personally I'd be too lazy to do it that way

Sad thing is, that the Ben & Luke scene contains some SERIOUS deinterlacing-artifacts, and I assume it's not the only scene suffering from something like that.

Well, it isn't that hard at all (if you know your way with AviSynth and VirtualDub). I guess NeatVideo (I've used the VirtualDub-version here, you can use the demo version) is the key.

NeatVideo is a video denoiser-plugin based on its predecessor NeatImage, a Photoshop-plugin to denoise still images. It works by sampling a noise pattern, so that the plugin knows, which form of noise should be removed. You can save this noise-profile along with the denoising-settings, and have NeatVideo use these as the default settings.

This is where AviSynth comes into play. Here's the script:

LoadVirtualDubPlugin("F:\VirtualDub\PLUGINS\NeatVideo.vdf","NeatVideo")

MPEGSource("sunset.mpg").crop(0,124,0,-126).ConvertToRGB32

NeatVideo

LancZos4Resize(900,600)
convertToYV12.LimitedSharpenFaster
LancZos4Resize(720,464)
AddBorders(0,56,0,56)

return last

Since AviSynth allows for VirtualDub-plugins to be loaded and used in the script, I do this with NeatVideo. The source is defined, and the black bars are cropped. Since VirtualDub-plugins require a color space format of RGB32 when used in AviSynth, the proper conversion is applied. After applying the filter (it uses the "defaults", as explained above), I upscale the image, a little larger than necessary, sharpen it with the LimitedSharpenFaster-function (which requires a color space conversion to YV12) and scale it down to the anamorphic PAL size (minus the black bars, which get added at the end). Scaling the image up before sharpening, and scaling it down afterwards helps removing some halos that occur through the sharpening.

That's basically it.

Utilizing the two segments ripped by R2D2 (and provided in THIS thread), I have started experimenting with them. Here are a few shots, comparing the simple upscaled version (the "before") and the processed version (using NeatVideo to remove noise, and AviSynth with LimitedSharpenFaster for upscaling and sharpening):

http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/9598/tuskenasv8.png
http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/4795/tuskenbaf3.png

And here a few more comparisons:

Binary sunset (simple upscale)
Binary sunset (processed)

Luke sunset (simple upscale)
Luke sunset (processed)

Luke home (simple upscale)
Luke home (processed)

Luke on ground (simple upscale)
Luke on ground (processed)

Ben (simple upscale)
Ben (processed)

Luke & Ben (simple upscale)
Luke & Ben (processed)

I think turning these discs into anamorphic (while cleaning them up a little bit) might be very possible after all, although it's probably better to start with the NTSC-versions (even for an anamorphic PAL result), since they're not already (crudely) upscaled.

I'll try getting some MPEGs up later.

Yeah, when I say novice, I really mean it LOL This is all new to me and I had no real interest in it until now...but thanks to people like you, wmgan, with the more I learn, the more interested in it I become!

As Wmgan said, use DVD Decrypter for ripping. It's free.

What I was concerned about was increased (compounded?) mpeg compression artifacts when coming from a (previously compressed) DVD source.

Given that the new DVDs are going to be dual layer (they are, right?!?) and that the black bars of the letterbox do compress quite well, I don't think that the transfer will carry any notable MPEG-artifacts. If it does there are still filters to eliminate these next to sharpening the image.

My next plan would be to use as much from the 1997-SE (I've got an anamorphic digital broadcast from a German pay-TV-station), including the localized opening logo "Krieg der Sterne" (because since the prequels came out there's always the "Star Wars"-logo in front of the crawl... even on the 2004-OT). Then I'd "just" need to upconvert the 2006-OOT to match the SE (which would probably include some LimitedSharpen and some dirt removal) to replace the SE-parts with their original versions. It's as simply as taking candy from a baby... trained in kung-fu...

Actually I was considering doing an anamorphic version as well... although I have recently finished my "custom DVD"-set (I think the term does apply here as well) using Moth3r's transfer. But after all the new DVDs will have a transfer with probably the least analogue artifacts, something not only Moth3r's trilogy suffers from.

At least I'd like to try upscaling those suckers to anamorphic, adn perform some major clean-up using AviSynth.
