The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)

They don't look like bitrate issues to me in the images, more likely a result of chroma smoothing or similar processing to reduce noise. Going on the amount of detail present in those image, I highly, highly doubt that increasing the bitrate to go dual layer would make a single pixel's difference.

Also, remember these are jpeg images that were posted, so they have been through a blocking compression method - you would need to see them posted here in a different format to draw any conclusions.

We have been working for some time on some scaling technology to see if a HD version is feasible.
The answer is yes it is, and a HD version will look better on HD sets, especially fixed pixel devices such as plasma screen, LCD screens and DLP based technology.
The reason is that the image has to be upscaled anyway to those devices, and external scalers or internal scalers are used to do it. They have to do it in realtime which means they can't used the best methods available as they would be too slow.
If you converted your video up to hidef using the bestest most wonderfullest methods (in technical terms) first, and burnt that to a DVD or file and played that back through your hidef set, the image looks much much better.

Idea: Library of Congress Film Preservation access?
Time
If you want to see the poor job on the colour grading of the DVD release, check out the colour correction tutorials on www.x0project.com.
The colour on the official DVD release is just all over the place. Also a lot of the garbage mattes and other problems are still in the DVD release.

I'm not sure what you guys want to do re the NFR?
I doubt they would give you access to the 35mm masters, more likely a telecined version of the master if that.
If you got the 35mm master - what would you do with it? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let you take it home and run it through an ultrasonic cleaner and a chemical bath and then scan it a frame at a time. (All 170,000+ frames of it).
Also, every film company that puts a film into the repositry has their own agreement with them re access and so on. So ILM will have a contract with the NFR detailing exactly what is and isn't allowed to happen with it.

What is is interesting is if you can get access to watch the film or to watch a transfer of it, as it is probably a different master to the one on the laserdiscs, and the content may be subtly altered - could be worth a look.

Help Wanted: re the Leia welding footage from ESB
Time
Yeah, I plonked the missing footage into the bootlegs I had just to round them out until we are done with the X0 stuff.
Progress is painfully slow at the beginning, as it is just sooo important to get the early steps right, as everything builds on everything else - make a mis-step at the start and the rest of the effort suffers or has to be scrapped.
You won't be old and grey though, I intend having my personal stuff finished well before the end of the year as a worst case.
I intend to be at this preservation thing for a long time though, I consider the X0 project as purely a first step on the road to preserving the trilogy.

I'm just as bad though, I'm constantly bugging TR47 about when his V2 will be done and out...

It is my understanding that TR47 funded the current project and cowclops did the work? Or have I got it backwards.
As for analogies, if in doubt I assume anything I read on a forum to be humorous rather than assuming it to be a dig - it keeps me much happier. (Even when I am wrong, I'm still happy)

Please stop asking about it?!?!
Awww, that's no fun. :-)

Anyway, I'm glad to hear it is still happening, I was worried it may have gone off the rails or something.
We all know how much work is involved, just wanted to know if it was still in progress, which it is, which is fantastic.

Patrick, it's not a matter of us needing the same files again, it's that we want another capture off a different LD.

I'm sorry to mention all that. That is all I will say about that.

Excellent - let's move on.

Re the PDI, I'm not going to go into a huge amount of detail here about the capture process, we will be covering it soon in an article on the site.

But to answer your question, no, it will not be captured on anything except the PDI deluxe card.
We have already done 3 months of experimentation with capture devices, and the PDI/Sweetspot was head and shoulders above any other solution -
At any rate, it far out-specs the laserdisc standards, so the difference with using anything above that is pretty academic.
It is more what is done after the capture from this point on.
Keep your eye on the site for more details re the capture aspect. For us as a crew, we have moved past that stage, we know how to get the best capture we can, and what gear to use, our R&D is now into the processing of footage stage, so that is what we will be discussing here for the most part, as it is what we are doing now.
