Not sure if serious.

My reaction to captainsolo’s review.

Actually, it was very well put.

amazing, every single word you just said is wrong

Cute, but nah.

TLJ dared to be new and unexpected and people hated it.

I reject this notion that TLJ “dared to be new”. It’s pretty frustrating seeing that posted everywhere. It’s doing the same damn thing all over again, just with different characters and in a slightly different order.

No. TLJ has plot twists galore. The main thing about the film is you think you know what’s going to happen but then it doesn’t. And that’s why it’s great.

You think Snoke is going to be the next Palpatine (ie. big bad who dies at the end of the third film), but he’s not.

You think Luke is going to mentor Rey but he doesn’t.

You think Leia is dead but she’s not.

You think someone or something on the Light Side is connecting Rey and Ren, but it’s Snoke, but it’s again not really.

You think Finn is going to destroy the tracker but he doesn’t and gets caught. You think there’s no way out except then BB-8 shows up in a chicken walker.

You think Poe is going to save the cruiser but he doesn’t.

You think it’s the Vice Admiral coming through the door but it isn’t.

You think Luke is on the planet fighting Ren but he’s not.

You think Ren is going to kill Rey but he doesn’t—he does exactly what Vader wanted to do in ESB but couldn’t.

It’s the best thing about the film. It keeps throwing curve balls.

Oh, and that business about Rey’s family being nobodies from nowheresville, Ren told her that, so there is no guarantee that he was not lying. But even if he wasn’t, I like the idea that not the whole of the The Force hinges directly on descendants of the House of Skywalker (as many people speculated that she was a daughter of Luke or Leia). As has been pointed out, many fans are now trying to speculate who “broom boy” at the end’s parents might be, when the point was that the Light Side would still continue with or without the Jedi Order, and in people whom you don’t expect.

That’s not plot twist galore, that’s a variation.

You can’t possibly tell me with a straight face that you expected Snoke to die when he did. Now that he died in the second film, that makes him no longer akin to the Emperor, since now there is a whole third of the trilogy without him. Palpatine was an integral part of the third act of Return of the Jedi. But Snoke is dead. Snoke is now no longer a part of the story going forward. And that’s a twist because everyone expected him to play the part of the Emperor from start to finish.

The problem is that Snoke shouldn’t have been in the trilogy to begin with. Hard to “subvert” this thing when no one cared about the character or knew who the eff he was. I’m glad he’s dead just so we don’t have to deal with him in IX, not because I think it was impressive to kill Snoke. Kylo should have been in some “different” organization to start this trilogy, not just Empire 2.

Star Wars is the space chase in Empire. A hyperdrive that malfunctions while making a whining noise just as you need to use it. One that can be fixed by Han banging on his space hotrod like Fonzie. Flying into an asteroid belt despite the odds. Out-piloting TIE fighters as they crash into rocks behind you.

Star Wars is NOT having some officer suddenly bring up “fuel” for the first time in 8 movies, and explain to you why we have to spend the next 18 hours in this slow-speed chase with poor plot and drama. All while easy in-universe logic gives you 10 reasons why this situation shouldn’t happen.

The Last Jedi was as bad as the Prequels, but with good acting. I’d say good dialog, too, but it lost that one thanks to the marvel quip humor.

If I ever watch this movie again it’ll be the fan edit that cuts out everything except Luke/Rey/Kylo.

Just watched TFA again.

Felt like a Star Wars movie. Really good. Tight pacing.

Main/only complaints:

 • Snoke
 • Starkiller Base
 • Destroyed New Republic / soft reboot

Snoke stands out as a character that should have been completely cut, especially with what we now know.

I still have issues with the out-of-scale starkiller base, and lack of New Republic world building. But that was less of a problem with TFA, more excitement about what would happen in the next movie.

Well…

The Last Jedi looking REALLY bad in comparison. Happy to have J.J. back for Episode 9.

Damn. I want to see a J.J. pick up with Luke. Such an epic ending to TFA, forever ruined by Marvel humor.

In The Force Awakens we saw some Senators on balconies or something as they were getting nuked.

That is the one and only piece of evidence that a post-Empire world existed. And now it doesn’t exist, because they were nuked in TFA.

Otherwise it’s exactly as if the Empire never lost power. Perhaps an orderly off-screen transition of power from Palpatine to Snoke occurred in this universe.

It was a complete soft reboot. Somehow they’ve convinced fans to insist that the First Order is just a small little imperial remnant despite all evidence to the contrary.

It’s not that I want to know the backstory about Snoke. It’s that Snoke shouldn’t exist in the post-OT Star Wars universe.

The Disney Trilogy is seemingly set in an entirely different universe from the PT and the OT.

We get ZERO recognition that the events of the OT occurred. We have to start realizing that TFA was a full-on J.J. Abrahams Soft Reboot of Star Wars back to the state of A New Hope. It’s like Endor never occurred.

We’re not expecting answers because Lucas and the PT gave us answers. We’re expecting the answers that the ORIGINAL trilogy gave us, such as the Emperor being defeated. When TFA comes out and the Emperor is still alive via Snoke, that’s why we need answers.

The Disney Trilogy would be so much better if Po was killed off in the opening scenes of TFA as they originally planned.

Poe is a great character so I disagree. However I didn’t call myself SAVEPOE so you probably feel stronger about it than I do.

Poe is a great character, but he’s not the main character. Finn is. At least Finn was supposed to be the main character.

The entire concept of Po was added to the opening crawl and film so he would die. He needs to die so that Finn is in debt to a hero of the Resistance. Po dies so that Finn can live; Finn in turn picks up the leather jacket and BB-8 and will become a hero himself. That’s the setup for the entire trilogy.

But Oscar Isaac is charismatic and swoonworthy, so Di$ney decided to keep him despite the reasons why he was supposed to die. This kills Finn’s character in the process.

The entire Disney Trilogy is screwed up thanks to TFA’s ANH-reboot and reset back to Empire vs. Rebels.

Lose the Starkiller base. New Republic is still in power. The First Order is a fringe secret organization in the outer rim, not The Empire again. They don’t have gigantic Dreadnaughts and Stealth Bomber ships.

The Last Jedi might have been a good movie on that smaller scale. (TFA would have been better as well.)

A single Star Destroyer and Rebel Transport locked in a lowspeed chase. That’s a potentially thrilling and dramatic set piece. U-Boat and Sink the Bismarck! vibes. (ALSO A CALLBACK TO THE OPENING OF A NEW HOPE).

As is, they required SO many universe-breaking gotchas to enable the main plot of the movie that the entire Leia/Po/Finn arcs were ruined. Rey/Kylo/Luke are the only things redeemable from this movie. Looking forward to The Last Edit.

The Disney Trilogy would be so much better if Po was killed off in the opening scenes of TFA as they originally planned.

Significantly changes the character of Finn: former Storm Trooper that needs to live up to the name of the “most daring pilot” that sacrificed his life to save Finn (and gave him his jacket + droid). A lot of that is lost now that Po’s still around.

Plus sets up Rey, Finn, and Kylo as the 3 main characters. That’s a manageable number.

Instead, The Last Jedi was ruined by too many characters:

 1. Po’s still alive and needs something to do, so construct an elaborate 80s sit-com lack-of-information confrontation with Laura Dern.
 2. Finn needs something to do. Send him on an elaborate Casino Planet plot that does nothing. It could have been just he and Leia in a single plot on the ship. But we couldn’t have Finn on the ship, because Po is already serving that role.
 3. Finn needs someone to do. Introduce another character Rose for some reason. This should have been a love triangle with only the 3 main characters Rey/Finn/Kylo instead. Now that we have so many characters, they’re playing down the Rey/Finn link.

The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit Ideas thread

I’d like to see what an extremely heavy-handed cut looks like.

Cut Laura Dern. Cut Po’s sitcom storyline. Cut Casino Planet. Cut Rose. Cut any mention of “fuel” or hyperspace tracking. Cut the wildly out of scale dreadnaught and stealth bomber. Cut the hyperspace rail gun.

Cut Leia’s spacewalk. Possibly kill off Leia in the bridge explosion. Finn didn’t do anything in this movie so I guess he’s be gone too.

Entire movie would be Rey training, Force Time calls with Kylo, Throne Room, Luke stuff at the end, Rey moving some rocks. Wipe to credits after Binary Sunset.
