It's a fan edit, it's a challenge, it's a poll, it's a cry for help, it's... Star Wars: The Longer Versions!
Time
Well, people, there's nothing to see here, anymore. Trying to stick everything in there is a lot more complicated than I gave it credit for. There's so many blurred lines between what to include and what not (shots from a documentary camera as opposed to the actual film camera, the use of unfinished computer graphics shots or pre-viz animatics, determining whether said unfinished or pre-viz shots are merely earlier versions of completed shots already in the film, etc.). I'm just going to stick to the finished, provided scenes. It will just be a learning experience for me (and a chance to impress my grandfather, since he likes Star Wars, but never feels compelled to insert the second disc for the deleted scenes). The only thing y'all might be interested in is my ANH cut, but it will basically be an unrecognizably stripped-down version of Deleted Magic.

In continuing my copy-cat spree, I'm going to try my hand at another Phantom of the Opera fan-edit synced to the original voices, as there's some things I would have done differently than in the current release (no disrespect to Wui-Ming Gan).

Good. If I can't find that first shot on the TPM DVD, I'll just get it from the babyhum DVD (of course, I will give full credit to everyone). I think all the tone poems are on the TPM DVD, so it should have that second shot. Well, all that's left is to look through the special features to see what else there may be. I love special features, so this will be enjoyable.

Whoa! I didn't notice that you had posted that, russs15! Thanks a bundle! I figured I would just keep the Senator's aids as they are on the DVD. As for Watto's "Sebulba!," though, I thought they left that intact on the DVD's extended podrace lap two deleted scene. Or was that a totally different shot? Damn it, I wish I hadn't thrown away my TPM VHS back in the day. After doing some research, though, I think the shots we are discussing are the only ones unique to the theatrical version. Am I right?

I'm putting the finishing touches on TPM with the scenes reinserted. Once that's finished, I'm going to scour that DVD for tiny snippets that weren't in the main feature. I'm using T'bone's phenomenal Cut Scenes guide as a heads up for what might be there. Unfortunately, most of those articles were completed before the DVD was released, so it doesn't say if they're there or not. So far, there's at least four short clips I'm looking for:

1.) An unfinished CGI shot of Jar Jar eating a clam before seeing the Federation ships moving his way.
2.) Jar Jar knocking over, catching, and trying to balance a series of containers in Watto's shop.
3.) A shot of a Naboo Starfighter spinning out of control (presumably after being hit).
4.) A brief clip from the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan/Maul lightsaber fight (I might not include this, as their location might be on an alternate path than that shown in the final version).

Again, if I'm missing anything, let me know! This is actually pretty fun.

How to extract BTM lost scenes?
Time
GRRRR!!!! I've tried screen recorder after screen recorder after screen recorder, but the voices keep misaligning! Can anyone give me an idea on how to stop that? If not, then I need help ripping the audio from the AVI so I can realign it. The problem is, the video hits little bumps here and there, where it sticks for a few frames, then starts up again. With a DVD, I could just fix this by chopping out the "extra frames," but this solution is ineffective because, while the video stops, the audio keeps trucking on.

Well, I hunkered down and got myself a copy of Womble, so the going just got a lot easier. I decided I was going to be sort of anal about including every extra shot I could find, so I need some more help. In the TPM DVD, the establishing shot of the Queen's quarters on Coruscant was lost because of the reinsertion of the air taxi scene. If anyone here happens to have a copy of the Japanese LD, would it be at all possible to post a download of that particular shot? Are there any other such deleted shots not available on the DVD? I also have an issue with RotS. Dooku's line "Don't assume that, just because there are two of you, you have the advantage" was only available in the RotS video game. Is there an easy way to rip that from the Gamecube? Thanks in advance!

I've tried both of those, but I end up with a bunch of artifacting and inexplicable gray screens every few seconds. I'll try setting it up like you said, though. Thanks! I'll keep my fingers crossed!

EDIT: I'm also going to need to crop the picture in places. The Alternate Cantina Sequence is a top-bottom split-screen with the finished version on the BTM CD, so I need to cut out the lower half of the picture*. I'll also need to cut off the letterboxed black space from the few shots of the '06 DVD that I'll be inserting into ANH. While I haven't tinkered with it for very long (having such a time getting the film together and all), I'm not sure if WMM can do that.

*Come to think of it, which freeware screencapture utility should I use? Since ANH's deleted scenes can't be copied off of the disc, I'll have to record it on my computer screen.

Oh, well, that's disheartening... oh, what the Hell. I'll do it anyway. I might just keep it for my personal amusement, then, since I wouldn't be depriving the masses of anything. Oddly, I can't seem to find ADigitalMan's extended editions anywhere on the boards (or the 'Net, for that matter). They're separate from your personal fan-edited editions, right? Well, to whatever end, I still need to find a program capable of editing the VOB files. Any suggestions/explanations/help in any form?

The title says it all, ladies and gentlemen. These fan-edits are about one thing: length.

*cheap porno music plays in the background*

The premise of this edit really isn't all that special: I'm inserting all the officially released deleted scenes into Episodes I-IV*. However, my good friend Erik made a suggestion that will make this somewhat interesting. We're both massive deleted scenes junkies (whenever we watch a movie, it isn't over until we've seen the deleted scenes afterwards). As such, our dream Star Wars versions would have the material reincorporated into the movie, so we'll have it all in one place. Erik, liking to do things the hard way, challenged me to do it using only freeware programs. As such, I'm considering calling this "The Poor Man's Version," instead.

Just so everyone knows, I am COMPLETELY new to this, so if I seem to be struggling with a simple concept, please don't be mad. Having never tried my hand at video editing before, I decided to find out just what needs to be done. I used the tool known as DVDShrink to rip the relevant files from the DVDs to my hard drive. After asking around, I was told that Windows Movie Maker was the best freeware video editor. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem capable of editing the VOB files from the DVDs. Figuring that a conversion was in order, I called my local pastor. After a moment of awkward silence, he hung up and left me to search the web for my answers. I ran into a lot of problems. First and foremost, the quality difference between the DVD files and the AVIs was absolutely glaring. Second, the audio had the tendency to get horribly out of sync. Realizing it would be better just to find another program capable of editing the VOB files, themselves, I figured I should ask you guys. Remember, in accordance with the rules, it has to be freeware. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

These edits might not look pretty (especially with the condition of ANH's deleted scenes), but that's not their aim. This is for the pedants who feel that if it's shot, it should be used. Before my family and I moved (I still keep in touch with Erik), I came up with a detailed shot-by-shot guide as to precisely where the deleted scenes would go. Unfortunately, it seems to have been lost in the move. I'm going to have to retype it, but when I finish I'll post it here to see what you guys think. I made sure to remove shots that simply wouldn't work (due to repeated dialog or a change of setting in the final cut). The change in quality will also provide some humorous moments, such as switching from the completed shots of the battle in the Geonosian arena to the unfinished blue screen shots in the Droid Control Ship. One scene that will rob some of their sanity is an even LONGER podrace sequence.

Where to begin is the big question. I was going to do them in chronological order, but then it dawned on me that TPM wasn't exactly the fandom's favorite son. So, I'm holding a poll. Which would YOU like to see first? I can't seem to find a poll option on this board, so I'll just count them, myself. Select one of these:

Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Episode IV: A New Hope

Now, just you watch. The day I finish all of them will be the day Lucas announces a new boxed set with MORE deleted scenes. After the doctors save me from my little seppuku incident, I guess I'll have to start all over again. Such is life, I suppose.

*After careful consideration, I realized that the new material for Empire and Jedi would only amount to a few seconds (not enough to warrant the projects).

And on BOTH alternatives, you'll have a nuclear winter than will vanish humankind from the Earth - which is a good thing, if you think about it.

Whoa! So you're saying that TWO bombs will wipe out the human race? We've set off what could collectively be compared to that in the past (especially considering North Korea doesn't have the "Big Boomers" yet; oh God, I just quoted Jar Jar in a conversation about politics! The end IS near!). Nuclear weapons are damn dangerous, but they're not frickin' asteroids.

The UN taxing its member nations: yay or nay?
Time
I've recently heard some far right political commentators (almost as annoying as far left political commentators, now that I think about it), and they're spreading unnecessary fear, talking about how the UN may consider levying taxes against its members, including the United States (being a US citizen, that's the one that concerns me). While I seriously doubt these claims (unless things are WAY WAY WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY worse than I think they are), let's pretend, for the sake of a good debate, that the issue is genuine. Would you support such action?

As if you couldn't tell, my answer is a resounding NO. I believe the countries of the world should cooperate with the UN, but not be subject to it. Sorry, John Lennon, but "Imagining" what could eventually become a world government is not my cup of tea.

North Korea is the only situation where using nuclear weapons is justifiable (at the moment). Kim Jong (mentally) Il might be crazy enough to use them on us. If (AND ONLY IF) he does, which would you honestly prefer: using a nuclear weapon on him, or sacrificing thousands upon thousands of troops mounting a ground invasion? I'm sorry, but when it comes down to a horrific "us or them" question like that, nationalism wins out for me. Or would you rather just let the UN slap him on the wrist? That's all they can do independently, after all: if the UN approved an invasion, we might as well do it ourselves, since the we make up the bulk of its military resources, anyway. My point through all this is: why deny us our greatest asset when there's someone crazy enough to set these things in motion? When the North Korean and Iranian governments start acting in a manner that could vaguely be described as rational, then I'm all for it. I don't want the world ending up in nuclear winter either, but think of it this way: they're more likely to use it than we are (especially if the Democrats gain control of both Congress and the Presidency in 2008), and if they use it, we can make sure they never use it again. Overall, the number of bombs used will be less. Let's pray, though, that none have to be used at all.

Let the dumb be smart, let the foolish be wise, let the ill informed be... better informed, let the students who use it for their research papers get Fs, wikipedia is here!

I hear ya. I got lucky this semester: my biology teacher LOVES Wikipedia and urges people to read something new from it every day. I'm strongly thinking about knocking her up so we can get married after her prison term. What say you?

To those who bought the Limited Edition Lord of the Rings DVDs...
Time
Having adapted to the endless re-releases of the Star Wars movies, I have made a policy of not buying a new edition of a movie I have unless some changes have been made to the movie itself (or if there's brand-spankin' new deleted scenes separate from the film). I know Peter Jackson once said that the Extended Editions were the final edits of the films, and he seems more likely to keep his promises than good ole George "Moneybags" Lucas. For fans who keeps a hawk-eye out for changes and deleted scenes, could you tell me if the new releases are worth it? They didn't advertise them that way, but GL didn't advertise changes for the 2004 DVDs, either.
