Cool thanks- I'll look for them. Did you ever read the Squadron Supreme maxi-series from the 80s? Good stuff then I thought- kinda interesting doing the Marvel take on the JLA. Lost Souls sound good as well and I'm certainly a Sandman fan!

I just finished the Sandman series...The Wake was fantastic. I think the best story of all of them was Rhamadan (sp?). Awesome. It's the one where a sultan asks Morpheus to make Baghdad a city of dreams. Think it was in the Fables and Reflections TPB. Great, great story. Did you read Endless Nights? I've heard some not good things about it, and I don't want to ruin my Sandman experience by reading it.

I'll have to check some out- recommendations?

I too, am amazed at the crappy animation of Marvel's tv products. Heck, even the Teen Titans series, which was heavily influenced by Anime, was VASTLY superior to anything Marvel's got going. My goodness, the other day I was watching X-Men and couldn't believe it was made in 1999. Thought it was something from 1983. Very poor.

It seems as though Marvel animation at some point said, as a company, "Aha- we have made G.I. Joe and our skills are complete! We shall progress no further!"

LOL!! I think GI Joe (the 80's version) is better than what they're doing now...

1) I've read and been a fan of both Marvel and DC but after browsing the racks I have very little interest in the stuff Marvel is putting out these days. It seems like they took what was already a segmented universe and made it even more convoluted by re-vamping series with the 'Ultimate' lines while still maintaining some semblence of original continuity. On the other hand the DCU seems to be the place to go for good reads.

I had always been a DC person. Then I stopped reading all together around 91. I got back into it around early 04 and have the following to say: I think DC is getting back to what makes it great, and from what I read it's much needed after a ho-hum decade or so since the crash. Nice "event" arcs, with awesome tie-ins, fantastic art, and good stories. Continuity seems solid, although I reserve final opinion until IC is done. Marvel - I have only come to Marvel since 04, starting with Daredevil and Amazing Spidey. However, I recently expanded to all the Spidey titles, New Avengers, Punisher, Supreme Power (Soon to be Squadron Supreme), and now Book of Lost Souls. I find taken on their own, Marvel's characters and artwork are superior to DC, however: The Marvel universe as I know it (which is little) seems quite disjointed, and they also seem to have no success at cleaning up continuity. From what I've heard House of M, etc were all pretty much a rapid response to IC, which is not a good way to be. I think the more titles J. Michael Straczynski writes, the better off Marvel is. He is one of the best things going for them right now, along with Peter David.

2) The impending release of the 'Ultimate Avengers' direct to DVD animated film sounded like a good idea when I heard about it but the clip here: Ultimate Avengers clip on SHH just looks like the same old cruddy animation that Marvel Productions has been cranking out since the late 80s! Wow they added some motion blur but why can't they add some different layout artists or *gasp* someone who knows perspective?!?!

Well, I don't think it's in the nature of too many people to glorify cowards, that's for sure. The American military is NOT the same as other military organizations. I grew up around it, and many people I know have served.

G4 - A Network in Decline?

I used to watch that network a LOT but it instantly became MTV with 'dudes' pretending not to be geeks and looking pathetic in the attempt. I was glad to hear that 'Call for Help' was back after they kicked Leo to the curb but 99% of the shows are ridiculous and utter crap IMHO.

The one video game show worth a damn used to be X-Play but they apprently even 'dude-ified' that show. I also used to think Morgan Webb was at least witty until A) She started doing monthly cheesecake shot in Maxim or whatever and B) Someone pointed out to me that she looks like Skeletor. Scary stuff that.

You know, at first I thought "He's crazy". Last night I fired up my DVR of the latest X-Play episodes and now I've got to say "THANKS FOR RUINING HER FOR ME!!!". It's downright frightening the resemblence... LOL

Well, I just finished the original Crisis on Infinite Earths TPB. I stand by what I said recently: Fantasic artwork and story, dialogue and "internalizing" very dated. I also just finished the "Sacrifice" TPB in which...

SPOILER

Superman is being controlled by Maxwell Lord, whome Wonder Woman kills to break the spell. Very good. Very good art. Now I can finally read Infinite Crisis (was holding off to re-read COIE).

Has anyone been getting the Infinite Crisis "Specials", ie: DOV, RTW, etc?

I hate the need to politicize, or seek to politicize, EVERYTHING. Case in point: Churches burned in the south. No word on whether or not it's been racially motivated.

The press is saying things like this everywhere, and yet what never gets reported is that 4 out of the first 5 fires were in predominantly white churches, vs 1 black church.

Why do they seek to make it a political issue? White or black, arrest the idiots doing it and stop the sensationalizing.

I have always felt that the word terrorism as it is currently used is a misnomer. Terror has always been a tool of the governing class, used to beat their opponents and their own citizenry into submission. Terror, or the application of terror in this context is nothing new. For example, when armies in the middle-ages would put entire villiages to the torch and slaughter entire populations, the terror of the people was at least a hoped for by-product.

I think a distinction needs to be made between the tactics of our current enemies and their desire to breed terror. Just a different means to reach the same end. In the past it was called "guerilla" tactics, which denoted a movement of a far-inferior group (in terms of weaponry, finances, support, etc) fought a non-conventional campaign against a superior foe, ie: Ireland, The American Revolution, etc.

I wholeheartedly mean it. I believe he was at minimum influenced by supernatural forces.

P.S. I haven't read that book, but will check it out. I have a list of Sage recommended books as long as my arm

LOL! It's a fantastic book, from what I remember. Give yourself time, though. About as big as a Chinese Phonebook...

I too am fascinated by WW2, Hitler's rise to power, and the final solution.

You ever read The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by Shirer? I read probably about 100, 150 pages when I was in high school. Very, very interesting read that I hope to come back to one day. My father knew someone from Germany. She told him that they were not Nazis, but they went to a rally somewhere to hear the demon speak, and before she knew it they were in tears and on their knees. I am completely convinced he was a demon with powers to persuade millions.

I see some people saying they find the cold-war era more intersting. I tend to look at the whole thing as one big war that is still ongoing - Colonialism and imperialism led to WW1, which led to Hitler's rise and WW2, which led to the circumstances that gave birth to the cold war and also added to the troubles in Palsetine/Israel. That is a simplified explanation but hopefully you know what I mean.

I see peace as only being the period of time between wars. Regrettably, there has almost never been a time without war on this planet.

G4 - A Network in Decline?

Why, oh why, would the "Video Game" network put all it's hopes on a franchise that nobody cares about anymore? The franchise in question is Star Trek. You've got to be kidding me. Almost all of my FireFox live bookmarks for G4 have been populated with the TNG broadcast schedule. Does ANYONE care anymore? The show was great while it was on, however it's run in syndication since it went off the air in 94. If you're trying to appeal to a fresh new audience, how about putting on something that hasn't been dead for 12 years??? Not to mention that only seasons 3 through 5 were actually worth a damn. I'm sure the modern 18 year old can't wait to get home and watch Up the Long Ladder or The Samaritan Snare...Huuhhhhhhhh.

the US did want this cause it would gave the soviets a massive stratigic advantage. so they trained and feed weapons into afganistian, to halt the soviet advance. (funny how bin laden was one of those that were trained). anyway so the soviets fought and fought, then eventually after 10 years picked up and left, shortly b4 the collapse of the union. NOW the US is in there fighting the same people they trained, who are now using the weapons left by the soviets.
One big difference.
The Soviets spent...10 years trying to take over. The US ousted the Taliban in, what, about a year. Sure, there are a few pockets always causing trouble (like in Iraq) but that is to be expected.

I think I've said this before on this forum, but it bears repeating:
For a long time, the US government used the philosophy of The enemy of my enemy is my friend. We allied with the Soviets in WW2 against Hitler.
We helped Saddam against Iran in the Iran/Iraq War.
We aided Bin Laden in Afghanistan.
I know there are more examples, but I'm not sure of any at the moment.

Anyways, if you look at what is happening now, the US isn't really doing that. Despite what many (like the French) may say, the EU is probably the closest ally we have. Most of them were allies in Iraq/ Afghanistan and most are united against Iran right now.
If you look to the east, Japan and South Korea are fairly strong allies and both are on our side concerning North Korea.
China and Russia, right now, are 2 big wildcards.

the reason for the time difference is cause, the soviets where fighting guys with the same technology as them, where as the US was using weapons of today vs weapons that were 15 years old.

I disagree. The Soviets were using their big helicopters, as well as tanks and all kind of rockets, etc. The Afghans didn't have a chance until we started assisting them by filtering in mortars, rpgs, and Stinger missles, as well as offered the training to use them.

WWII is so fascinating, because there is so much material available to study. Also, the effects of it are still be felt. Very interesting time in history, to be sure.

I've always been an admirer of MacArthur. Stone cold man...

My post was just a joke. I don't actually believe anybody is a homophobic here. There are those who do not agree with it, but they are all very smart people who have their own well thought out and argued reasons for doing so. Sorry for any offense.

Allow me to rephrase:

For those of you who have chosen to avoid Brokeback Mountain because of it's depiction of homosexual romance (maybe it's against your religion, maybe you just don't dig that kind of thing), or maybe homosexuality has nothing to do with it and you just don't ever want to see an Ang Lee movie again after Hulk, but whatever your reason I urge you to reconsider because you are depriving yourself of a Michelle Williams nude sex scene. And Anne Hathaway gets hers out too.

I should rephrase as well...I did not mean to imply you were calling us that. It is something however, that I've been wanting to "get off my chest" in general, though. Not necessarily here.

Speaking of getting things of the chest, Michelle Williams could float an ocean liner, I think, with those things.

I was going to use this to discuss the American Civil War, but thought it's probably best being used for general military histpory.

I've had a passion for this subject since I was young. Especially the Civil War, WWII, Napoleon, Hannibal, and Rome.

Anyone have a particular battle/general/topic of interest?

Nice.

For the homophobics among us, I suggest you bite the bullet and go see Brokeback mountain, which contains sex scenes and titty shots of both Anne hathaway AND Michelle Williams

This is probably best said in the Politics thread, but I've always wondered why if someone disagrees with homosexuality as a concept, who feels that it is destructive and offers reasoned arguments and evidence to support this that they're branded a homophobe...doesn't phobia mean unreasonable fear? I don't think disagreeing with something should be classified as an unreasonable fear, because then there are all kinds of people who want to "cure" you.

Have you seen that movie with Anne in it called "Havoc"? I hear it's a huge departure from her kids movie type roles, and includes serveral...interesting scenes. Fair to say there won't be a Princess Diaries III with her in it.

Or Famke Janssen?

Wow...she looks fine.
