Well, I gave Wind Waker another shot. The single most frustrating thing to me is still the camera control, which is evil if you are tight in the corner or a wall. The camera at that point just does not know what to do with itself, and centering it does nothing of any value.

Other than that, I've made some progress. I finally got the sail and am learning how to handle the boat. The nav system is...ok, though a little frustrating. The environments are BEAUTIFULLY rendered...makes me want to dive in for a dip. The only GC game I've seen that is better in terms of the environment is SMSunShine.

This is the only Zelda game I've played since the original, and it's been difficult for me to make the jump from 2-d "overhead" view to 3-d third-person. I miss the original music and some of the sound effects, but on the whole the game is pretty good. I thought that after years of playing more realistic games on pc that it would suffer, but I was wrong.

I'm confused. Are you classifying the underlying code that makes up the OS as a language? Or are you talking about the OS as a whole as a language? I think Windows is written in C and assembler for the most part. Sorry if I sound dense I'm just not following you. I mean, DOS was a looooong time ago, and it would be hard to say that they're STILL profiting from it in a technical sense. I guess I just don't see what the problem is with patenting a programming language.

As far as smart business moves, Apple made a HUGE one with Xerox-PARC. The GUI revolution came out of that group and Apple had no problem "positioning" themselves to take advantage of it.

True to a large degree, but none of that would matter if they didn't have a patent on a programming language. Nobody buys a Microsoft operating system because it's well made or because its features are so fantastic. They'd have little power to manipulate people if they were forced to compete on that level. It's mostly luck.

What language do they own a patent on?

Anyone remember The Sinister Urge? I think it was that one...this guy and his date are in the park when they're attacked by a bunch of hot women. They hold the girl while they...attack...the guy. All you hear is Mike saying "Yeah, please don't dangle your hair on my naked body...'Cause I HATE that", then as they drag him away Crow says "Remember honey...I'm doing this for you!". LOL

No, I think you've got it right. It's the one with "ORTEGA!" the mumbling, smoking zombie/bum hybrid.

Not to take anything away from Joel - the guy created the show and some of my favorite episodes are his. The last three seasons of the show are much better than the rest though I think.

Totally agree. The Sci-Fi channel years were the best of the series, IMO.

I'll have to look over my list when I get home from work, but ones that immediately come to mind are "Mitchell", "Prince of Space", "Santa Clause Conquers the Martians", "The Incredibly Strange People Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies", and the one with the wannabe James Bond guy (can't remember the title right now). Also, the first 10 minutes of "Teenagers From Outer Space" is gold.

*shudder* - "Zombies" was so bad that even the riffing didn't make it any better for me. There were a couple like that that I just couldn't get past, like The Creeping Terror, Zombies, The Wild Wild World of Batwoman, and others.

Thoughts on Werewolf? Think it was the first year of the Sci-Fi channel. "So I guess they just put suspected werewolfs in the neo-natal ward!"...lol, classic.

Nintendo Power was pretty crappy during the N64 and early Gamecube days. They barely even acknowledged that Nintendo even HAD competation back then.

That's weak. You beat the competition by making superior products and letting them speak for themselves, highlighting the differences. Not by ignoring it.

I personally don't hate Apple, but I do believe they're not so innocent in this case. They knew someone else owned the iPhone trademark and they assimilated it anyway. If Microsoft had done that every Linux hack and Steve Jobs sycophant on the planet would be screaming bloody murder. Apple has in the past made a good living out of pointing out how evil Microsoft is...I wish Cisco had nailed them to the wall on this one.

That being said I'm still considering a Mac for the kids...

You're misinterpreting my take on it. I meant that it's mediocre in terms of Mario games...not "games" in general. It's definitely enjoyable, but hardly a "great" Mario title.

Sadly I hate that one too. SMSS is another one that's mediocre in my book. RE4 is a sweet game that I really need to get.

O_O... Jedi, dude... you're killing me here. Sunshine was certainly no classic, but to call it 'mediocre'?... Just wow...

As for Resident Evil V, I'm holding out hope that Capcom will announce it for the 360 as well. It's probably a long shot--yet I simply cannot afford to support games and accessories for five consoles and three hand-helds. Heck, I can't support what I've got! My mom gave me Call of Duty 3 for Christmas and that's still the ONLY X-Box 360 game I own.

You're drinking the fan-boy kool-aid chalts...

Mediocre is generous.

I hate, read: HATE floating over-the-shoulder cameras! You ALWAYS have to re-center with the damn things. Give me first person or a locked over the shoulder cam and I'd be happy.

Zelda in first person? Or locked? That would be nearly impossible to play. And how hard is it to press the L button to re-center the camera?

The point is that with every move I make the camera moves as well. No, it's not hard to re-center but it becomes an annoyance when I have to do it every 10 seconds.

Would you please elaborate on this? Was there a press release? How exactly did the NGC era die?

It was reported on AOTS last night that Nintendo announced the end of GC production both in actual hardware and titles. I looked for news of this on the Nintendo site with no luck.

I'm REALLY looking forward to the virtual console when I get my Wii. The lineup I saw on their website is tremendous. I never had another Nintendo console after the NES (until GC), so I've never played the stuff like Link to the Past, SMB64, SMWorld, etc. I'm excited to play this stuff that so many people consider classic.

I take it you have never experienced Ocarina of Time then either? Perhaps that game isn't as great as we all make it out to be, but for those of us who had played the Zelda games from the beginning this was long awaited and the first time we got to see our much visited world of Hyrule in 3D. It was amazing.

BITE YOUR TONGUE!

Ocarina is as close to gaming perfection as we'll ever get - it's every bit as good as we make it out to be!

I never did play Ocarina. I must confess, I purchased Wind Waker for GC and found it to be not so great. The camera controls were AWFUL and some of the movement frustrated me so I bailed early on.

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Go back! Give it another chance! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?

I have thought about it. Maybe I'll visit it this weekend.

How are the camera controls awful? O_O ?? TWW has the same camera controls as GC Twilight Princess and Ocarina doesn't have any controls but centering with Z.

Anyone think there'd be a market for a Zelda MMPORPG?

Not a 3D Zelda game, no... A 2D Zelda MMORPG? Yes! A 3D game wouldn't work online because of the puzzle focus, but a 2D game could.

You think 3-d and puzzle-oriented are mutually exclusive? I don't know. The Lara Croft series has been pretty successful at it. I just don't think Nintendo is too keen on that market.

I'm looking forward to going backwards and starting from Link to the Past and making my way through the rest of what I can get my hands on up to and including TWLP. Part of my problem is that when I left my NES behind, I moved to Genesis, followed by a pc and never looked back, going through shooters and sports games almost exclusively. I'm hoping that the solid game play with the older Zelda titles will make up for the "arcane" look relative to the newer titles.

I believe that Zelda is, without question, one of the greatest games I've ever played and the success of the franchise is not in doubt. My personal favorite has always been SMB, though. I played that game for months on end and fell in love with it. I played SMB2 for a while but eventually put it aside. I got a DS last year and New SMB with it and was absolutely addicted to it. I'm VERY much looking forward to some of the classic SMB games, like SMW and SMB64.

I'm so damn excited I can't wait!
