Star Trek Beyond. The first film came across to me as mediocre but there was the potential for improvement with the sequels because they had a good cast. Into Darkness dashed any such hopes by rehashing TWOK within a mindless action film that just happened to utilise the Star Trek franchise as marketing packaging. When STB was released, I stayed at home after the past two disappointments and caught it on TV recently.

It was yet another awful, disappointing film that bore little connection to its source of inspiration. The first few minutes gave me false hope that this entry might actually buck the trend but it went downhill rapidly with yet another mindless and soulless plot. Idris Elba was wasted in his role as the antagonist and STB does have a few, brilliant moments that made me smile but it was jarring to witness them and think of what the film could have been with better writing and direction. Paramount has cancelled the fourth instalment. If Bad Robot cannot muster better than this then it’s probably for the best.

3.5 out of 10.

Info: The Godfather Part III - theatrical version preservation
Time

It was shown by the BBC in December 1994, as part of their Xmas film line-up: which was how I saw it. I didn’t record the transmission and cannot remember anything that would help us to ascertain which version it was.

However, The Godfather Museum once again has the answers! 😄

http://godfathermuseum.blogspot.com/2012_05_02_archive.html

When it was released to home video, The Godfather III ran nine minutes longer than the original theatrical release. This “Final Director’s Cut” became the official version of the film, although the theatrical cut was still shown on HBO and other cable channels for several years.

If a recording of one of these airings can be tracked down, it could be used as a basis to at least gauge what would kind of editing would need to be performed to produce a replication of the theatrical cut, using the Blu-ray etc. 😉

Recorder: new documentary about 35 year TV preservationist Marion Stokes
Time

I caught a news piece about this documentary and in turn, the life of Stokes on the BBC recently and I was absolutely spellbound. She recorded TV broadcasts 24 hours a day for 35 years. Imagine if she had been a member of this community! 😮

Has anyone else on here heard of her, or this film? There are no release dates so far for the UK but I can’t wait to see it.

But get with the times of home media physical formats.

Troll confirmed. I shall respond no further after this.

Starve Trolls Do Not Feed Them

Lol sorry. 😛

I think that we posted simultaneously. 😄

As it goes, I neither own a 4k UHD Blu-ray player, nor a 4K HDTV and I really do not feel the need to sell up and upgrade yet again because I’m quite happy with my current setup.

It’s a pity that Tiddy couldn’t keep it civil. There’s no reason to be at each other’s throats over this kind of thing…

No reason whatsoever. I could see that they were headed for a ban - and I’m certainly not gloating about this outcome. I suspect that other (personal) factors were fuelling their behaviour rather than anger about scanning film prints. If it wasn’t this, it would have been something else…

Anyhow, moving on. Is that Derann 16mm? It does indeed look lovely. 😃

EDIT: was the Umatic a TV airing?

This isn’t some bullshit whingey tripe about some George Lucas revisionism this forum is so bitchy about. Too much complaining about comparing it to an older print on an outdated format such as VHS, Laserdisc, and DVD. Hell, the current Pet Semetary 4K+Blu-ray disc has fucking weird color timing but is revisioned. ALIEN doesn’t regarding the Theatrical Cut. Same goes for BLACK HAWK DOWN. 2K upscales don’t count.

So yes, perhaps this does recreate the theatrical experience of seeing this within the same day or a week of opening in 1979. I’m keeping the official 20th Century FOX 4K UHD release and this fan “restoration” will be a nice bonus disc, not a replacement.

EDIT: By the way, no need to pay attention to me, I’m a fucking dumbass.

We’re allowed to express our preferences and disappointments regarding film presentations, just as you are allowed to gush about about the 4K UHD release of Alien. Although, why you insist on being so irate is puzzling. You prefer the latest release? Cool, enjoy. What difference does it make to your life if others disagree?

This doesn’t need to happen, especially with the 4K UHD release.

Then you should have no problem ignoring the thread.

SW - that was a good one

I don’t mind his comment, print-based preservations aren’t to everyone’s taste.

Even so, many of us certainly do appreciate the time, energy, effort and money that has been invested by you and other members of the community on print-based preservations, to enable us to watch and enjoy films as they were originally intended to have been seen and for that, I personally thank you. 😃
