The fan banner thread--post your custom OT.com banner here!
Time
Have you created a custom banner in support of the originaltrilogy.com petition? Post it here as an alternative to our own banners so others can save it and place it on their web sites when linking to originaltrilogy.com.

Please only post here with your own banner, and keep comments/chat out of this thread so it doesn't become cumbersome to navigate.

It's certainly true that a 100% objective documentary is rare--likely nonexistent. The point the author of that document is trying to make is that BFC doesn't count as a documentary because it relies upon intentionally deceptive and misleading methods to make its point. Most documentaries present the facts in a way that helps skew the perspective to that of the filmmaker, and that's fine. BFC doesn't simply present things in a certain light to get you to look at the topic in a new way; it lies to you, twisting the truth and coercing you to come to conclusions to which you probably wouldn't arrive under normal circumstances.

The first time I saw it, I thought it was genius. Now I think it's trashy genius.

Bowling for Columbine was fascinating to watch, even if it is complete and utter horseshit (spoilers), full of deceit and exaggeration.

Documentaries should fascinate viewers and make them think by presenting the facts in the most objective way possible, not by using questionable editting techniques and faked scenes. I knew there was something fishy about the Charleton Heston interview when I saw it.

I agree with many of the points Moore tries to make. I just don't agree with the way he makes them.

Banner

All good points. It wouldn't be unmoderated though. I'd likely set it up so that whenever someone uploads a banner, it's stored but not displayed. I'd be sent an e-mail automatically to let me know there was a banner that needed review, and I could take a quick look and approve/junk it. Basically, a medium amount of coding now to save me from annoying updates in the future.

I'm the type who puts little things off until I forget about them. If I get an automatic e-mail and all it takes is two clicks to check an image and approve it, I'll do it right away. If I have to spend 10 minutes making edits to a static page, I'll blow it off until later (and never do it).

I'll be adding a fan banner section at some point where people can post their own banners for download. I might make it automated so people can upload them on their own. We'll see.

I have a huge, huge list of things I want to accomplish for the site; it's been building since the launch in March. But finding the time to do it now that I'm engaged and trying to find a job in another state is difficult. I'll fit it in somewhere though.

Any interest in a selling/trading forum? Or perhaps a toys/memorabilia forum?
Time
I personally wouldn't object to letting people post about things outside the LFL universe, simply because people tend to be not just Star Wars collectors, but collectors in general. I have action figures and toys from many different lines.

Do you guys think it should be a buying/selling/trading forum, or a discussion forum?

I'm sure with all the SW fans on this board that many of you collect various types of memorabilia, either Star Wars-related or not. Probably a few A/V nuts here as well.

Would any of you have any interest in a forum dedicated to selling/trading merchandise (toys, posters, movies, etc.) and posting good deals you've found? Maybe just a general memorabilia forum?

I'm not sure if the traffic would justify such a special forum, but it might be worth a try.

Custom avatars
Time
I've received several PMs regarding issues with uploading custom avatars. This wasn't a problem with the old hosting service, so I think it's just an issue with the current host's ColdFusion server configuration. I'll be looking into it and will post here when it's resolved. Thanks for your patience.

Non-Star Wars discussions and adult chat - please restrict to Off Topic forum
Time
I generally use a light touch when it comes to moderating the forum. Some would say I'm more like a ghost

However, I notice a lot of topics lately that start off relevant to the forum in which they're located, but eventually end up way off topic with general chit-chat going on. A lot of old posts that should've died weeks ago are being kept alive by these chats. Sometimes the material in some of these exchanges is a little on the racy side.

I intended for this forum to be geared toward adults rather than children, so I don't take issue with adult-oriented discussions. However, discussions of this nature are typically found in the Off Topic section of just about any forum, and those who wish to avoid such discussions can usually expect to be safe from them by avoiding Off Topic.

From now on, please refrain from veering too far off a thread's topic, and try to keep discussions not related to Star Wars or the site in general in the Off Topic section.

Overall, I'm very pleased with the behavior of the members of this forum, so please don't look at this as a scolding. There have been a few skirmishes, but nothing that didn't work itself out on its own. You're a great bunch and I'm glad to see you're enjoying the forum so much. I'm just trying to keep things tidy as well as friendly for newcomers who might wander into a topic expecting one thing but finding something completely different.

Thanks, and please continue to enjoy the forum.

Naive question #1
Time
It's just a matter of me going through all of my old e-mails and compiling a list. I started making a list as they came in, but not right away, so I'll have to do some backtracking. I'll also have to look over the old posts in the supporting sites forum and compile a list of sites whose owners posted there.

Actually, if you want to do that, it would help a lot. I'd only need the site's URL. I don't think there are a large number of posts to go through in that forum either.

Video Store Magazine article: "Fans Petition Lucas to Release Original Wars"
Time
I suggest we wait until after the weekend. I'd like to watch the site for a few days and see if anything pops up. I'll know when I get home tonight and check my e-mail whether or not things are running smoothly (people are quick to complain when things are messed up ).

I also plan on sending out a reminder e-mail this weekend to those who haven't confirmed their signatures yet. Since this will involve over 5000 messages being sent out at the same time, it'll be a good test of the mail server's stability. So far, I've been receiving e-mails almost immediately after they're sent, so I'm confident things will go well.

As a matter of fact, overall performance of the site seems to be noticeably better for me than the old server, especially on pages that require database interaction (like the forum). The limiting factor on the previous server was definitely the speed of the SQL server, so I'm guessing this hosting service is running SQL on a beefier machine. Support has also been top-notch. I e-mailed a tech question the other day and got a response in about 10 minutes. These guys are much more on the ball than my old service. Bodes well for the future.
