Upgrade
Time
I deserve to be ripped a new one for the length of time it's taken to upgrade the software. Totally unacceptable. Part of it is due to the heavy web dev work I'm doing at the office right now; it's hard to muster the energy to program when I'm already doing it all day. Regardless of that, the forum software has been at the front of my mind for the last month and I've been itching to get back into it.

New toys to play with tend to get me fired up and working, so the Intel-based Mac I'm buying this weekend should do the trick Expect some movement very soon.

Btw, I increased the PM limit to 100.

I'm a huge Win2K fan. Been using that on my Windows boxes since it was released and it's been ridiculously stable, even before the service packs. I still use it on my web dev test boxes. I have a retail copy I won in a contest MS held back when 2K was released.

Great OS. When I eventually get a Mac Pro and install Parallels for Windows, 2K will be the version I install.

OS X also requires fairly regular updates, but reboots aren't required as often, and when they are, you only need to do it once.

It's also nice that OS X runs well on older hardware. You could drop a few hundred on a used dual G4 tower and have a fairly capable machine to get your feet wet. If you decide you like it, get rid of it in six months and buy a newer one.

I'm actually selling my dual 2.5Ghz G5 and moving to a Mac Pro if you're interested

We picked up a Mac Pro recently for the new designer we hired. My boss was stunned at how the Mac connected to our network and immediately recognized all our network drives and other stuff. Macs handle Windows networks better than Windows does

OS X ftw!

I can tell you a lot more about the Acura RSX I drive every day than my mom's Ford Sport Trac, which I've driven here and there when necessary.

I will say that the way the mac hardware is laid out is quite nice (everything's within reach, don't have to move a lot of stuff around). As far as the OS goes, it's 6-1 1/2-dozen the other.

So you don't use a Mac regularly. That's what I thought.

Again, I'm not saying MS's Op Sys isn't a resource pig or even a rip off, I'm just saying that there really isn't a MUCH better alternative out there. Mac OS is nice, but still has it's issues, and Linux is a mid-range derivative.

Most companies have a long history of hardware problems if you care to look. And I'm sure if any batteries had exploded during QA, Apple would've investigated it further. The whole exploding battery thing got blown way out of proportion--even in Dell's case.

When was the last time you used OS X? What is your experience level?

Sony manufactured those exploding batteries. You know, the same batteries that Dell--a PC manufacturer--recalled. If you have issues with OS X, that's fine, but don't take potshots at Apple because hardware they outsourced from another manufacturer took a dump. That can happen to anybody. Apple's hardware is easily the best I've seen from any computer manufacturer. Their tower cases are not only gorgeous, but amazing feats of engineering, especially in terms of cooling (which they really had to pay attention to back in the PPC days).

The sad fact is that Vista is lipstick on a pig. MS ripped 3D effects from OS X that were actually functional (Expose), modified them, and made them less functional (Window Flip 3D). What's funny is that Leopard will likely leapfrog Windows yet again in a couple months with new features that not only look good, but actually function well.
