Forum Down?
Time

I don’t see anything in the logs to indicate an extended outage, but the third party performance monitoring script that tracks the forum application has been causing the forum to crash several times per day 😕 I need to find a replacement, obviously.

The forum restarts itself within a second or two, and if you try to access the site during that brief period, it should just throw an error. The fact that you couldn’t access the site at all for a half hour is weird.

Suggestions for the New Forum
Time

Frank your Majesty said:

The biggest problem is to have the forum actually online, which was often not the case with the old hosting service, the second biggest problem is to restore the functionalities like subscriptions, bookmarks and drafts, the third biggest problem is how things look like. What use is the most beautiful forum if it’s unavailable every now and then?

Stop making sense. It confuses people.

Can't forum migration wait until after Episode 7 releases?
Time

Sad story time - I knew this server migration was imminent, as it had long been flagged up by Jay…but I kept having one family drama, work crisis, etc. getting in the way of me finding some time to try and capture all my hundreds(!) of various saved ‘bookmarks’ which I’d stored for various reasons to refer back to. And also my many saved ‘drafts’ that I was still currently finalising for various topics.

So anyway…I finally got a chance to sit down to spend a while doing this…when the site suddenly went ‘offline’ at that particular moment!!.. I’m gutted. Aaargh!

So I’ve lost the lot, and can just console myself that at least my PMs are still viewable after the migration.

The data still exists. After I build the interface for topic subscription management, I’ll probably build something for bookmarks. Draft post functionality will return at some point also, but if you were planning on posting any of that content soon, probably not soon enough.

Strangely enough, I find I have gotten used to the way the forum looks on my PC quite quickly. On my phone it’s a bit more of a chore, but I’ll share that in a more appropriate place.

I’m still open to tweaking the layout on larger phones (I seem to remember you describing yours as being a larger model). I test on an iPhone 6 and Nexus 4, but haven’t seen it on anything larger. I run simulators on my computer, but that’s not the same as holding a phone in your hand. If you could include your phone model and some screenshots on Github when you create the issue, that would help me replicate it.

Info: Our projects released thread
Time

I appreciate those of you who are defending me and requesting patience from those who aren’t happy about the current situation, but it’s not necessary. The last thing I want is for there to be friction between forum members over the software.

Anyone who feels that things are so bad as to require picking up and leaving is welcome to do so. I only ask that you quit posting about it and just do it already. A little less conversation and a little more action, please.

Also, let me know when you’ve vacated the premises so I can archive your project threads. This will ensure that rather than exposing your search engine traffic to our awful design, they can be greeted instead with a 404 and a round trip back to Google, where they can hopefully find you in your new location.

I wish you the best of luck in your new community. Hopefully you find yourselves surrounded by members with a bit more “community” in them than we’re seeing from you here.

Edit: Anyone who uses their project threads to simultaneously shit on the forum while promoting their projects in a new location will find their topics locked, because that’s some Grade A hypocritical bullshit.

I’m with you about the new forum though… Was this thing really ready to launch?

It only happened because of the fairly frequent outages that were happening. If we didn’t have that problem, I’m sure Jay would have waited a while before making the update (and it probably would have been just an update, with no change of servers).

Even the migration gave the old hosting service one last opportunity to screw up; I haven’t had FTP access for days and can’t retrieve the old avatars until they fix it. It’s just the latest (and now the last, thankfully) hassle in a long list of problems over the previous year and a half, and frankly, since this all comes out of my own pocket, I got sick of paying them for such bad service.

The old software couldn’t run on the new server without major modifications. I decided to spend that time getting the new software, which was still very early, in better shape so it would at least be usable at launch. It’s been a marathon and I haven’t done much in my spare time since April besides write code and test. I’m not complaining; I was happy to do it.

Anchorhead said it best in the bug topic (before I locked it); we’re in the same boat we were 8 years ago when I launched the old software. Tons of complaints, lots of “essential” features missing, lots of people expressing their subjective opinions (quite loudly and rudely), the sky is falling, how could you do this to us, children are dying, etc.

Last I checked, we all made it through just fine. We will this time, too. Everyone just needs to take a breath and relax. I was pretty pissed yesterday as the complaints starting rolling in, but I’m over it now. Anyone who finds the site “horrible” and “unusable” (not my words) can either chill out and wait it out, or you can take a little break and come back in a month or two, after which I’m sure a lot of the biggest issues will be worked out.

Just keep in mind that if we were still on the old hosting service, we probably would’ve ended up with a week-long outage starting right before before Ep. VII dropped.

Things should be more compact
Time

Didn’t mean to sound short. I’m at work. Just busy 😃

I launched the site knowing that the desktop version was going to have a lot of critics. But at some point, you need to move forward with what you have and iterate from there. Imagine if adywan or Harmy had waited to release their work until everything was perfect and we were all happy with the results. We’d still be waiting.

secrethistoryofstarwars.com gone
Time

If the creators of either of these sites is interested, I'd be willing to provide hosting on the new server if it helps. Depends on their requirements, of course.

It looks like both domains have expired (with secrethistoryofstarwars.com pointing to a Japanese matchmaking blog). If they can't get the domains back, I'd be willing to host them as subdomains of ot.com. I'd hate to see them disappear completely.
