Pandora (Avatar fanedit) - V2 HD & SD releases coming soon (Released)
Time

Avatar was one of those movies that I despised when I first saw it in the theater, but has started to warm up to me on DVD (kinda the same thing as the Star Wars Prequels, which is an apt comparison since these movies have a lot of the same flaws…). It is not the epic masterpiece that various audiences and critics (and James “I deserve the Director Oscar!” Cameron) proclaim it to be, but I felt that if I could edit the film down and remove some of the more offending elements that I hated, then I’d be better able to enjoy watching this 21st century take on the Hero’s Journey.

FanEdit Information
Type of Fanedit: True Fanedit
Intention With This Edit: To remove the subplot of Jake acting as a traitor to the Na’vi from the plot of Avatar, along with numerous other cuts, trims, and edits to improve the film.
Original Title: Avatar
New Title: Pandora
Original Runtime: 162 minutes (2 hours, 42 minutes)
New Runtime: 145 minutes (2 hours, 25 minutes)
Time Cut: 16-17 minutes
Software Used: Sony Vegas 7 (video editing), Adobe Photoshop CS2 (image editing), Adobe After Effects 6.5 (compositing), Cinema Craft Encoder 2 (rendering), Sony DVD Architect 4.5 (DVD authoring), AutoGK (AVI rendering)

AVI Release Information

  • Resolution: 720x416
  • Audio format: 5.1 Dolby Surround
  • Language: English

Major and Minor Edits:

- Complete Removal of the subplot of Jake acting as a spy for the military behind the scientists and Na’vi & the Na’vi rejecting Jake after his reveal as a spy.
This was my biggest point of contention in the story - I hated and I mean absolutely HATED the subplot of Jake acting as a spy/double agent to both the scientists and Na’vi. It serves no purpose other than creating forced and false drama for the characters (it was this element of the movie that reminded me the most of Fox’s abysmal animated garbage, Ferngully: The Last Rainforest…) and giving a contrived reason for the Na’vi and Neytiri to reject Jake. What shocked me is just how easily this subplot can be completely removed from the film and with just a bit of editing, there’s no affect from it left on the main characters.

  • Cut down on some of Jake’s monologue in the film’s opening
  • Cut the company men telling Jake that he’ll “get very good pay”
  • Cut the “fresh meat” and “dinner on wheels” jokes by the marines
  • Cut Quaritch’s “You’re not in Kansas anymore” line
  • Cut Quaritch’s lines after he says “Pandora rules” and Jake’s monologue to the Colonel
  • Cut Norm telling Jake “This is your Avatar now”
  • Cut Jake trying to be “science smart” for the camera in his first video diary
  • Cut Norm introducing Grace by name to the audience offscreen
  • Cut Max telling Jake when to meet for Avatar training and to use “big words” in front of Grace
  • Cut Grace’s “Oops” when she kicks the cup out of the way of Selfridge’s golf ball
  • Removed all references of the name “Unobtainium” from the film
  • Cut Jake poking at the spongy lining of the linkup capsule
  • Cut Norm telling Jake “They’re gonna put you out”
  • Cut the insert “close-up” shot of human Jake’s face reacting to Avatar Jake running in the garden
  • Recuts to Jake’s meeting with Quaritch, making him mostly silent as Quaritch explains his need for someone to inform him on the Na’vi
  • Cut the grunt’s response to Grace after they land in the forrest
  • Cut Grace telling Jake to stand his ground to the Hammerhead
  • Cut the majority of Jake’s taunts toward the Hammerhead
  • Retinted the scenes of Jake wandering through the forrest and Neytiri watching him in hiding
  • Cut the scene of Grace, Norm, and Trudy searching for Jake before they have to return to the Compound
  • Cut Neytiri telling Jake for the second time that he’s “like a baby”
  • Shorten some of the “long pauses” shots between Neytiri and Tsu’tey after the Na’vi capture Jake
  • Cut Jake saying he’s from the “Jarhead Clan”
  • Cut the “Clan supper” sequence which introduces Jake in his native clothing and looking like an incompetent ass to the Na’vi
  • Cut Jake meeting with Quaritch and Selfridge and getting his assignments for gathering intelligence on the Na’vi
  • Cut Jake taunting Norm by saying “Guess who has a date with the Chief’s daughter”
  • Cut the insert “Jake’s reaction” shot from the scene of Tsu’tey riding up and telling him to go away
  • Cut Jake passing on intel on Na’vi and Hometree to Quaritch and Selfridge
  • Cut the line “She knew I was talking with the Colonel” from Jake’s monologue
  • Little cuts throughout the “Neytiri trains Jake” montage
  • Cut Jake refering to Neytiri’s beliefs as “Treehugger crap”
  • Little trim to the shots of the Banshee attacking Jake, to removing visual inconsistencies
  • Cut Tsu’tey laughing at Jake nearly falling off the cliff
  • Cut Jake and Neytiri laughing outloud after they escape Toruk
  • Cut Jake’s remeeting Colonel Quaritch before his Na’vi initiation ceremony
  • Cut Jake’s internal monologue after he and Neytiri mate
  • Cut Grace’s line of “Needing to muzzle” Quaritch to Selfridge
  • Cut Grace’s line of “Needing to understand if you want to coexist with the Na’vi” to Selfridge
  • Cut Quaritch’s line of being “So happy, he could give Jake a kiss”
  • Cut the end of Quaritch “It’ll be humane” speech, to remove the line “… more or less”
  • Completely removed the sequence of Jake explaining to the Na’vi that he was a spy for the military, Neytiri rejecting Jake, and the Clan capturing Jake & Grace and preparing to execute them for their betrayal
  • Numerious recuts/edits to the “Hometree Bombing” sequence to remove the “Jake & Grace execution” subplot
  • Completely removed Trudy’s presence from the “Hometree Bombing” sequence
  • Cut Jake meeting Neytiri with her dead father and her telling him in anger to leave and never come back

  • Cut Trudy’s “Fricken daisycutters” line, along with some of her reaction shots with her, Jake, & Norm in the moble linkup station
    - Numerous little cuts and edits throughout the final battle sequences, to improve pacing, reduce poor dialogue and acting, and remove visual inconsistencies
  • Cut the insert “close-up” shot of Trudy’s face before her chopper is blown up by Quaritch
  • Cut Jake telling Neytiri “That’s an order!”
  • Cut the scene of the Hammerhead stomping onto the mech and the soldier inside screaming
  • Cut the shot of Moat looking up from the Tree of Souls at the shuttle bomber
  • Little cuts to the “Quaritch VS Neytiri” fight, to remove a few visual inconsistencies
  • Cut Jake telling Quaritch “It’s all over”
  • Cut Jake telling Quaritch “I knew you were gonna say that”
  • Cut the extended shot of Quaritch waiting several moment before ejecting his mech’s cockpit hatch
  • Cut Quaritch asking Jake “You think you’re one of them?”
  • Cut the “linkup tunnel” shot while human Jake tries to relink with his Avatar
  • Cut the final shot of Quaritch’s “death face”

JasonN's PT FanEdits (Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, & The Black Knight Rises) (Released) ** Revised V3 Cuts In The Works

I don't know for sure how JN feels about them.

I seem to recall they are not as sharp looking as the DVD-9's.  But I had some playback issues with the DVD-9's (major issues on my PC, minor on my standalone player) so I had to use the DVD-5's for the cutlists.  The problem seemed to be bitrate related, which has been corrected on the v2 DVD-9 of AOTF.  It is supposed to be fixed for the other DVD-9's too, once those are available.

Incidentally I will have an updated cutlist up for v2 of AOTF at some point in the near future.  There are a few very minor changes to the actual edit.

I was not the individual who created the DVD-5 versions, so I have no idea as to their quality. My personal recommendation is to download the V2 DVD-9, as this is the latest release with proper color-correction (to remove the magenta hue of TPM DVD video), corrected video AR, and a few additional edits/improvements to the fanedit.

Progress on the V2 DVD of The Black Knight Rises edit has hit a snag and I've had to slow down a bit on finishing it (which really is just rotoscoping a few additonal scenes of the Anakin/Dooku fight to recolor Dooku's lightsaber to be purple). I'll let everyone know when it's been finalized.

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...
Time

Quint from AICN also recently reviewed it:
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/44274

It sounds like the documentary's pretty mixed in terms of quality and features more than its share of SW fans bitching and moaning about The Phantom Menace (which isn't exactly the type of film that I'd care to watch, cause I see plenty of that on this site already ;P ).

SW: SHADOWS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC (3-in-1 Prequel Film) ** V2 cut AVI Release Now Available
Time

Been a while since I've posted any updates - the V2 cut is nearly 99% finalized, with just a few odds and ends that need to be tweaked before it's compete.

Here's a new video preview of Qui-Gon's funeral sequence (without Anakin in the scene) and the transition from the EP1 chapter of the story to the EP2 chapter:

When he talks about the (awful) dialogue between Anakin and Amidala in EP3:

- You're beautiful

- it's because I'm so in love

- no, it's because I am so in love with you.

- So love has blinded you?

Matthew is condused once again... because he don't understand what it means. Well, I agree this dialogue is really bad written and really bad delivered. But it means something: Padme thinks she looks beautiful because happiness and love in her life makes her look beautiful, but Anakin saying no could be taken as "no, you're maybe not really beautiful, but I'm so in love with you that I see you as beautiful". And Padme is making fun of it.

1. The fact that you took a full paragraph to dissect and analyze that scene for any potential meaning is insane, considering how god-f***ing awful that sequence is (or how piss-poor Lucas is at writing and directing cinematic romance).

2. Matthew is attacking the narrative logic behind the lines and why they're being said:

- Lucas's believe that he could convince an audience that two characters are in love by having them spout dialogue saying that they're in love

- Matthew, however, correctly points out that (based on everything shown so far in these Prequel films) Padme has no real, logical reason to love Anakin considering that he's yelled and bitched her and other people out numerous times, made traitorist remarks about the Republic, has a huge ego and superiority complex, and committed mass murder against women and children all because he got angry.

I think people often refer to Ady due to the fact that he has done some amazing work that has become quite famous in the editing world, he has become a editing idol of sorts, dont get me wrong there are amazin edits out there but Adywan is like the face of star wars edits. Like Hulk Hogan of old professional wrestling. Its just an automatic response in a way.

Before Adywan, there was the Phantom Editor...

After Adywan, there will most likey be another editor who redefines SW edits...

In the end, SW fans are never 100% satisfied with any one particular fanedit (no matter how much improvement that the edits attempt to provide) and I guarantee that there will be people complaining about the Prequel Trilogy: Revisted that it's not their "vision" of what a SW film should be and that the Prequels are still horrible films that are beyond saving...

The problem is, a lot of people seem to almost be against development in the story. The rpequels are about the fall of Anakin, but many people, rather than see Anakin go from a confused but good soul to a bad one, they want him to bad before he even becomes a Sith (hence, things like removing his hesitation at killing Dooku, amongst other proposed changes). Rather than see the benevolent Republic become the corrupt and despotic Empire, they want the republic to be corrupt and broken well before Palpatine crowns himself emperor.

I hope that you're talking about Lucas and Lucasfilms, because there are MANY editors and edits that do not subscribe to making Anakin evil from the beginning. (if anything, Lucas's depiction of the character in the original films paints a far negative or evil figure than what he should've been)

As for how removing Anakin's hesitation in killing Dooku, I think you're missing the point entirely - cutting that element out does not make Anakin automatically evil, it makes him IMPULSIVE and RASH by giving in to his emotions (his anger and fear) and relying on them to overpower and kill his opponent. In ESB, Yoda states that anger, fear, agression, and hate is the path to the Dark Side, that a Jedi never uses his knowledge of the Force to attack/destroy and that once you start giving in those emotions of the Dark Side, the more and more that you begin to be controlled by them. By killing Dooku impulsively and out of anger, Anakin is stepping over the his boundaries as a Jedi and therefore, Dooku's murder could be seen as his entry into using the Dark Side (just as Luke gave in to anger in ROTJ, except Anakin succumbed to it whereas Luke realized and denied the Dark Side).

Sith do love gray areas, though. Palpatine was able to lure Anakin to the dark side by first bringing him to a gray area of morality. Claiming that to understand the force you need to understand both the light and dark is about as gray as it gets. The Jedi way is "Light side = good, dark side = bad," whereas Sith claim that morality is relative and that it's up to the individual to determine what is right and wrong. The reason the line is so controversial is because it's the straight up opposite of how the Jedi and Sith actually are, and thus has no place in the story. If anything, it should have been Anakin telling Obi-Wan that "only Jedi deal in absolutes. I'm finally free of their single-minded dogma!"

Again, it's all a matter of perspective - I see Palpatine's words not as a reflection of his views or the Sith's of morality, but rather as a means of decieving Anakin into losing focus of what's right and wrong and luring him over to the Dark Side. It's also a matter of a person's perspective on the Jedi and Sith to the Star Wars series and whether or not those perspectives can be changed: in the original cuts, yes, the Jedi are dogmatic and controlling, but those aspects can also be changed, removed, and altered through editing (making the Jedi, the Separatists, etc., into far more ambiguous or "grayer" organizations)

But if you're going by the logic that you presented, then Anakin's line of "If you are not with me, then you are my enemy!" should also be removed as well, since that's the opposite of what you view the Sith as believing (since a Sith would not have "dualistic" thinking).

EDIT: Just watched the clip. It's very good and a massive improvement. But why did you keep the worst line of the entire saga* (IMO) "only a sith deals in absolutes". Apart from being a contradiction in terms, it's untrue in every respect. The sith love gray areas.

Depends on your perspective, but I didn't see the Sith as "loving grey areas", at least not in my edits (that was more of Dooku or the Separatists).

As for why I kept Obi-Wan's "Absolutes" lines:
- cutting the scene from Anakin's "Then you are my enemy" to Obi-Wan's "I will do what I must" really didn't work for me at all (it just always seemed like there was something missing in between those shots whenever I edited out his "Absolutes" line)

- I felt like by saying that line, Obi-Wan had finally accepted or come to terms with the reality that Anakin was now a true Sith (I never believed until that moment in the film that he really believed that Anakin had gone to the Dark Side.... although maybe it was just a matter of poor writing or acting on Ewan's part, though)

I don't know if the Obi-Wan / Anakin / Dooku duel is satisfying enough to be the movie's climax. I guess I'd have to watch the last 15 minutes or so of the movie without the Yoda duel to know whether or not I'd miss it. From a story point of view it's an unnecessary scene, but in terms of pacing, buildup and satisfaction I'm not sure how easily it can be done away with.

If you want an example of that type of edit, here's the one I did for my Twilight of the Republic edit of EP2:

I've seen large portions reedited brutally and whole sections cut with only positive effects on the story. You'd be surprised what can be cut. I thought the same as you until I saw an ep3 edit with no Yoda/Palpatine duel. As bad as it was, I thought that needed to be there intercut with the Obi-Wan/Anakin duel. Not the case, as it turns out. The film even flows better without it.

That was probably from my EP3 edit:

The V2 has been delayed a bit, but I'm still working on finishing this edit first before my other fanedit projects.

New Edit (possibly)
Since I now have an HD version of EP1, I'm now looking into the possiblity including the scenes of Qui-Gon's funeral and using the HD video to crop out and remove young Anakin from the shots.

Jason, I'm incredibly late on this, but I thought I'd let you know about it. I noticed you were irritated about the grain in episode one. There is in fact a remedy for that. I have an incredible plug in called Neat Video. Google and see if there is a version you can use. I know they have it for After Effects. But it is easily the greatest grain remover I've ever seen. I can't boast enough about it. It would be worth it to you take a look at it. Look forward to this edit. Also thought that since you're doing another epic edit of the prequels that maybe it might be a good idea to do an epic of the classic trilogy. Just an idea.

I'll check into Neat Video - I see that they also offer plugins for Sony Vegas and VirtualDub, which would be great since those are the 2 programs that I use the most in fanediting.

As for the OT, well.... if I do any edits of the OT films, it will only be to finally develop and finish my RotJ edit, Last of the Jedi.
(since I'm prefectly happy with Adywan's SW Revisited and I'm sure that I'll be very pleased with his ESB Revisited edit)

All the edits/cuts are in place and the only thing left to do on the V2 cut is a little bit of compositing work. I've also tweaked some of the dialogue of the Analysist droid from the previous video as a few sentences didn't really sound right (I'll probably upload an updated video preview of the scene sometime tomorrow).

Hopefully, I'll be able to start rendering the DVD files tomorrow and upload the AVI version of the V2 cut either on Friday or Saturday.

To break the new Episode/Chapter runtime down:

Total Runtime
146 minutes (was originally 150 minutes)

EP1
23 minutes (was originally 24 minutes)

EP2
31 minutes (was originally 30 minutes)

EP3
92 minutes (was originally 96 minutes)

I still think the best solution is the Phantom Editor's "Kamino system" dub over the Zam death scene.

That's what I also did in my individual EP2 edit (except I just gave Zam subtitles saying "in the Kamino System" instead of dubbing him/her/it), but for my 3-in-1 SOTOR edit, I needed to edit the toxic dart into something else entirely since the entire "Zam" subplot was removed from the story (so I just redubed the droid in the deleted "Dart Analysis" scene to change the dart into part of an explosive and gives Obi-Wan the info he needs about Kamino)

Though the droids in my opinion look just as if not more daft than Dex. The silly lips and the spiky hairdo are something that could really do with alteration.

In some ways, yeah they're kinda weird looking, but I'm so used to robots/droids in Star Wars looking unusual that I can handle their appearance (heck, there were plenty of wonky-looking droids in the Jawas barge and the Cantina scenes of ANH).

However, I can live with the droids a hell of a lot more than Dex, mainly because Lucas has the nerve to try and make us believe that that ugly sack of CG crap was suppose to be one of Obi-Wan's closest friends in the universe (other plotpoint in EP2 which had me just screaming "Bullsh*t!" in my mind while watching it...).

Excellent! Almost exactly what I have in the works for my edit. I absolutely love the voice you've done. Is it your own? The original droid voices pissed me off.

Yes, I used my own voice to dub the droid (since computer speech synthesis software proved too unreliable and the synth voices weren't nearly as convincing as a real actor), but I also ran it through several audio processes:

- a noise filter to remove any room static (also gave a nice little effect to the voice)

- some sound enhancements

- a pitch shift to make the voice sound higher

- a nearly-silent reverb effect

- a low filter of a "vocorder" effect
