My Top 10 Reasons ROTJ sucks
Time

It's just from the Blu Ray and over 6 years since I last saw Return of the Jedi
I just want to add - I'm talking about the OT only. Lucas ruined so much of Jedi with his changes (IMO), from Jedi Rocks to Little Sarlacc of Horrors to Noooooo!! to no Yub-Yub to Hayden Christensen's ghost - I just can't watch it. It'd be like trying to eat my favorite meal with a big ol' turd on top of it. I'll stick to DJ's GOUT preservation, which I consider to be exponentially superior to any of the prequels, even with the dated FX work.

It's interesting that the OP and I were exactly the same age (11) when we saw Jedi in '83, and yet our opinions are wildly different. I love Jedi and while some parts, I agree, could have been done better - I enjoyed it immensely when it was released and felt it was a fitting end to the trilogy. None of the OP's criticisms ever crossed my mind in '83. And Leia's bikini? Yeah that had an effect on my 11 year-old brain.

One more thing - while Wookiees instead of Ewoks would have certainly been cool, it brings up other problems since Wookiees weren't primitive - they were space-faring and already allied with the rebellion. It would have been a completely different movie, beyond simply replacing Ewoks with Wookiees, is what I'm saying.

I dunno.  While I personally would never have been that rude if I were actually trying to communicate with her, the 'hypocritical, insufferable cunt' remark made me laugh quite a bit, because it's not so far from the truth.

The 'raped my childhood' type of comments are a pretty poor choice of words, of course, but it does seem like the defenders are the ones who are actually using them the most.

I agree that it's a poor choice. And while I'm not defending its usage, I'm not offended by it, either.

Just because you aren't offended by something doesn't mean it isn't offensive.

Well, it does mean it isn't offensive to the person who isn't offended.

The first week it will sell a million units or so in NA and make probably around $200M+ in sales.  And they're selling only to people that have xbox 360s, so the potential market is much smaller to boot.

SW BD seems like a fairly modest succes in comparison.

EDIT: Spoke too soon.  Looks like GoW3 sold 1.3 M copies in the past 3 days.

Based on the sample size of my household, Gears 3 is outselling the Star Wars blu-rays 1-0.

Are The Star Wars Movies Your Favourite Movies?

8) Forrest Gump

9) American Pie

Your list is now invalid :p

I hate Forrest Gump.  But I would never begrudge anyone for liking what they like.  I myself am quite fond of some pretty objectively bad films *cough*Russ Meyer*cough*.

The funny things is, my favorite filmmakers, bar none, are Stanley Kubrick and the Coen Brothers.  However, none of their films would probably crack my top 10.  That's just how it shakes out.

3 ways Marcia Lucas (then wife of George Lucas) saved Star Wars
Time

It's funny, because GL's decisions regarding the special editions and prequels has not only made me question his current connection to the Star Wars universe, but it's forced me to reconsider how much of the OT's success can truly be attributed to him and him alone.  The prequels are pretty clearly a testament to what kind of product George will produce when he surrounds himself with yes men and the ideas are 100% his.

If it weren't for his contributions over the past 15 years, I never would have doubted that the OT was 99% his vision.  But now I do.  That's irony.

What was the "fatal flaw" of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

IMHO, the prequels should have been set THOUSANDS of years before the OT.  Completely original story and characters in the same universe as the OT.  If any of you have played Knights of the Old Republic, you know what I'm talking about.  This would avoid all problems with continuity and visual anachronisms.

In TPM, Darth Maul says, "At last we will have our revenge [on the Jedi]".  What is he talking about?  No one knows - this is a complete nonsense line within the context of the films.  The prequels should have been about THAT.

I Wonder Why...

The excuse that it'll cost too much to restore the theatrical versions is complete BS - experts estimate that it'd cost $100k per film TOPS. They have prints, they have IP's they have negatives, they have the 1997 SE's as archival negatives - all they need to do is scan those, chop out anything with SE content in it and drop in theatrical bits, which being isolated short sections of footage, they can get from whatever source is best on a case by case basis. Throw in some color-correction and paint out some dirt and damage and boom, done.

I'm thinking they should give some of the talented members here $100,000 and access to the Skywalker Ranch, and see what happens.

Jules and Vincent discuss the blu-rays
Time
INT. '74 CHEVY (MOVING) – MORNING

An old gas guzzling, dirty, white 1974 Chevy Nova BARRELS
down a homeless-ridden street in Hollywood. In the front
seat are two young fellas – one white, one black – both
wearing cheap black suits with thin black ties under long
green dusters. Their names are VINCENT VEGA (white) and JULES
WINNFIELD (black). Jules is behind the wheel.

JULES
– Okay now, tell me about the blu-rays?

VINCENT
So what you want to know?

JULES
Well, Star Wars is changed more, right?

VINCENT
Yeah, it's changed, but is ain't a hundred percent changed. I mean they
can't change Ewoks into Wookiees, roll a joint, and start puffin' away.
They're only supposed to change old effects or certain designated lines.

JULES
Those are in Jedi?

VINCENT
Yeah, it breaks down like this: it's legal to buy it, it's legal to own
it and, if you're the creator of a fan edit, it's legal to distribute it.
It's legal to download it, which doesn't really matter 'cause – get a
load of this – if Lucasfilm stops you, it's illegal for them to search
you. Searching you is a right that Lucas actually doesn't have.

JULES
That did it, man – I'm fuckin' downloadin', that's all there is to it.

VINCENT
You'll dig it the most. But you know what the funniest thing about
the blu-rays is?

JULES
What?

VINCENT
The little differences. A lotta the same shit we got here, they
got there, but there they're a little different.

JULES
Examples?

VINCENT
Well, in the blu-ray, they got a new sound mix. And I don't
mean Dolby Digital 5.1 either. They got an all new DTS-MA
track. In Jedi, you can see Jar-Jar dancing at the end. Also,
you know what Han says before he shoots the Sarlacc tentacle
to save Lando?

JULES
He doesn’t say, “Trust me?”

VINCENT
No, Indiana Jones said that once. They wouldn't want people
to get confused.

JULES
What's he say?

VINCENT
“It’s ok I can see a lot better.”

JULES
(disbelieving)
...
What'd they do with Vader?

VINCENT
Vader's Vader, but he yells, “Nooooo” some more.

JULES
(chuckling)
Nooooo. What about Phantom Menace?

VINCENT
I dunno, I didn't watch the prequels.  But you know what
they put on the bonus discs instead of the original trilogy?

JULES
What?

VINCENT
Boba Fett cartoon.

JULES
Goddamn!

VINCENT
I seen 'em do it. And I don't mean a Clone Wars cartoon,
this is from the Holiday Special.

JULES
Uuccch!
