Has anyone considered giving this a shot? https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/5s8kjz/rey_sees_darth_vader_in_her_force_vision_how_i/ This would be a perfect addition to te visón scene if you ask me.

Honestly I think this would take away from Kylo’s appearance in the force-back. Also, the main point of this edit is a “gentle restructure” of scenes, not to heavily edit the entire movie. But nice idea none the less.

I’m glad the crawl is appreciated! 😃

I don’t know exactly how it was done for TFA but I used the same software and got a close match so it’s probably similar.

Basically it’s just a text layer in 3D gliding past a simulated camera with depth of field, and then there are small adjustments like blur and a slight gate weave motion added.

The prequels just had perfectly sharp steady digital text, but TFA emulated the old analog OT crawls for nostalgia, so I did that too.

Looking into my blender project, I have found a few effects that may be able to mimic some of these same effects…all but the gate weave, that would have to be done manually. But chromatic aberration, depth of feild and slight blur can all be achieved within blender. I may do some tweaking to my project files to mimic some of these characteristics of the original Crawl. I have already made a few small changes to the project for a 2.0 version. Maybe I will have 2 different project files, one with all of the analogue effects and one that leaves things clean. I will probably post in my original thread any changes I make so as not to clutter this one.

Adding a K-2 droid to the background of a scene in the Death Star isn’t at all “adding random nonsense” like Lucas did.
You could say that the battle droid Ady added to the sandcrawler is closer to that kind of tinkering, and even that isn’t the same at all. These small changes can help thread the galaxy together.

+1. I consider this a very good suggestion. Might be hard to pull off but I have quite the faith in Ady.

+1 this idea as well. I think it makes sense and would add to the continuity of the universe.

Haha, gorgeous. Yes, I would love to have you render out yours, even after tinkering with mine for so long. When someone with power tools offers to help, put down your hand tools. I would, however, request using the same font for the title as the theatrical version of TFA.

No problem! 😃 I’m changing it back to the theatrical font now, it’s probably for the best.

I watched a presentation by the guy in charge of graphics and holograms on TFA and he mentioned how they carefully mimicked the original crawls by replicating lens distortion, film gate weave and other things digitally.

Pretty interesting if you’re into that kind of stuff:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsFvSgg2-Yo

But of course it’s even cooler how they did it originally, by filming actual back lit text.

Anyway, I’ll tweak it just a bit more and then I guess I’ll try a render.

so did you use these same type of techniques for your crawl?

Here’s another revision of the crawl that I rather like. This one will probably be what I go with.

Episode VII
THE FORCE AWAKENS

Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER has risen in secret from the ashes of the fallen Empire.

Failing to convince the New Republic to combat this emerging threat, General Leia Organa mobilizes a covert RESISTANCE to gather allies from the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

Desperate for her brother’s help, Leia has sent her most trusted pilot on a daring mission to Jakku, where a clue has been discovered to Luke’s whereabouts…

I like this crawl, my only critisisms would be is that the middle paragraph seems to read as though it is in the present, where all of the other crawls sounded as though they were happening in the past, until the last paragraph.

Also, I’m not a big fan of the crawl using first names and saying that she is desperate for her brothers help. I think just saying that she is desperate for help, and calling her “General Organa” and Luke just “Skywalker” would fit better with the OT.

But I do like the mobilizing a Resistance bit, and calling Poe her most trusted pilot.
Just my 2 cents

…removes all references to Kylo being a skywalker until the end.

Waaait a minute… you know something we don’t? 😛

you do know that you dont have to have the skywalker name to actually be a skywalker. Just because my last name may be Smith, and my mother was a Jones, doesnt mean I’m not a Jones.

How does everyone keep forgetting that Kylo’s mother is a Skywalker, which means he is also a Skywalker. Sorry for the rant, this just drives me mad.

I would like to echo the sentiment posted by previous users here. This is quite impressive/horrifying! I am afraid that when I see the final edit I won’t be able to get this thing out of my head 😃
Thanks for all of your hard work, you have truly inspired many here, and no doubt will continue to inspire many to come. As has been neurotically expressed by the likes of users such as jedimasterobiwan, we are all anxiously awaiting the release of what will be the definitive version of one of the greatest films of all time for most of us. After following this project for several years it is fulfilling to finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Thank you again for everything you have contributed to this community.

since i am in the “no crawl for Rogue One” camp and i was disappointed in the hideous opening title card (Jason Ward of Making Star Wars said it looked like someone made it in MS Paint 5 minutes before the movie was released, and i have to agree with him) i decided to make my own title card. The following video is a mockup of the title card that was in the film and then i made 4 title cards of my own. i am trying to decide which one i like best for my inevitable edit of this film. let me know what you all think.

Really well done!

One minor thing: In the movie, there is also movement of the camera through the starfield, so that it’s not static. I really liked that effect and would like to see it in the reworked title crawl as well.

Now for the title itself: I really like the turning letters as in some of the trailers, but I would prefer if the title went away from the camera instead of coming closer. And I’d make that movement start earlier while they’re still turning or at least fade it in slower, since right now the turning and the movement afterwards seem very disconnected.
I also liked the idea of the “mirrored” lines appearing around the title itself but I wouldn’t go with STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE but keep the original title/logo with ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS Story since I like the focus on Rogue One instead of Star Wars in the title and I’d keep it this way for the title card.

So my personal favorite would be number 4 with the official A Star Wars Story logo and a receding title.

I will do a mock up of this and see what it looks like. I don’t know if I like the “a Star Wars story” subtitle. I honestly hope they do away with it in the future. I added the “Star Wars” logo so that the supposed audience would know that this was a Star Wars movie, but obviously not an episode.

Seen the film for the second time. Really digging it and feel there’s a lot of fanedit potential. Like or hate TFA, the problems cited against it are so inherent to the film that they can’t really be removed with a fanedit.

Rogue One, on the other hand, just has some bad scenes that can be removed, so it’s ripe for us. 😃

My suggestions-

  1. Don’t start in space, no need since crawl was axed. Possibly also remove “A long time ago…”
  2. Cut opening for cringy child acting and blue milk throwaway shot.
  3. Put scene of Jyn waking up in the present day to before the logo, clearly indicating the transition in time. This possibly reframes the opening scene as a dream, as it appeared to be in the trailer.
  4. Replace oddly cheap-looking logo with nicer trailer logo.
  5. After logo, first scene should now focus on Cassian killing informant.
  6. Move first scene of Bodhi on Jedha to after Jyn and Cassian leave Yavin, in order to avoid excessive planet hopping. Follow it up directly with scene of Saw interrogating him. This means the audience never has to “leave Jedha” immediately after getting there the first time.
  7. Reinstate “I Rebel”? Or at very least make ending of briefing scene less awkward. An alternative would be to have the final exchange be “Is that clear?”; “Yes, sir,” also from teaser.
  8. Cut Cantina Fellows on Jedha.
  9. Cut Psychic Alien monster; no real pay-off in the long-run
  10. Trim Tarkin stuff throughout; camera lingers too long and performance is somewhat weak.
  11. Cut first Vader scene at Bast Castle in its entirety because of poor performance vocally and physically. Better to save Vader for final scene at end.
  12. Take out some of “odds” jokes, which grow excessive.
  13. Cut 3PO and R2D2.
  14. Radical, weird alternate ending idea I had! 😄 (not actually sure how well this would work):

But… instead of ending on a CGI Leia, have the Star Destroyer chase the Tantive, as per the opening shot of SW77, then cut to the deleted scene of Luke watching from the surface of Tatooine. Iris out on a close-up of Luke’s face, as he puts down the binoculars. This would require restoring the deleted scene to an acceptable level of quality, though it could be nice to bring back the “Luke’s theme” musical cue from SW77.

In any case, I feel ending on Luke would do a more clear job of concluding the film’s theme of hope- personifying it, as he is literally “A New Hope” instead of having another character simply say the word. Also, looking at bigger picture placement within the saga, it’s a nice changing of the guard from Vader, shown in close-up, to Luke, who would end the film in close-up. There’d also be an added bit of symmetry with Force Awakens, both ending on Luke.

Of course, we may have a bunch of deleted scenes to work with, as well! Though, my suspicion is that the reshot 3rd act is radically superior to the original.

Freak’n love this, especially the end, and i think it is totally possible to pull off. there was a user on here that was working on restoring all of the deleted scenes starting with the Luke scene.
