4K restoration on Star Wars

Um, isn't the 81 version just the 77 version with the Episode IV crawl and a slightly different sound mix?

Doesn't it have also different colouring? You know like the artificial darkening of the "R2 in the canyon" sequence, or the different colours of the binary sunset sequence ....

And the shot were the fighters take off to fight the Death Star was redone - I don't remember if it was for the 1978 mono mix version or for the 1981 version.

The '81 re-release used '77 prints with the new crawl spliced in, so aside from the crawl and and the sunsequent flyover sequence, the '81 version should be 100% the original.

I don't think you'd be looking at a jarring difference, if they decided to cut the original shots from a different source - from what I've seen of various 35mm prints, they can be made to look good enough to work well within an o-neg restoration and if they had an I.P. I'm positive that with a little bit of computer magic, you couldn't tell the difference.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

That would be great! Thanks. If it made things easier, I could always demux the *.264 file from the m2ts prior to the conversion.

How does one define the codec, which is to be used for the lossless compression? If that is part of the script (which I expect it has to be) I'd like to use "UtVideo YUV420 BT.709 (ULH0) VCM".

Yeah, I thought about it and while this way, it doesn't exactly correlate to the way the numbering ended up on SW DeEd in terms of describing the properties of the versions, this way it is much more in line with what the original intention was for the SW numbering:

With SW, the v2.0 was a huge update over v1.0, with better picture quality, more faithful colors and better despecialization. Then the original intention was for v2.1 to be just a small update of v2.0, with some minor fixes and for v2.5 to be the, as the jump in numbering suggests, a larger update with major improvements. But in the course of making v2.1, it evolved into the larger update that v2.5 was originally intended to be, mainly because of the use of 35mm sources for some shots and then v2.5 ended up being the small update, with tiny fixes.

This of course was actually an error and the numbering doesn't really make much sense this way, so I realized that instead of sticking with this erroneous numbering for ESB and ROTJ, it will be better to go back to the way the numbering was originally intended - v2.0 being a big update over v1.0, then v2.1 being a small bug-fixing update of v2.0 and v2.5 being the final version and the last version to still use the GOUT as a source in any way and in the light of recent news possibly the last to use the 2004 transfer as a source as well.

Well, that article says they will be screening a digital print of the '97SE, which would match perfectly what I was saying - it could well be this 4K restoration and they simply restored the '97SE as it was on the re-assembled negative and maybe inserted a thing or two on top of that (we all know from history, that the fact, that they're saying it's the '97SE doesn't mean it really is the 97SE down to the last detail).

How about a scan of the negative re-cut in '97 to the SE version (which seems to have been the source of the 2004 master) with even more new changes - like possibly for example an all new Jabba (the 2004 version is pretty bad too).

Is anyone going to that screening in Atlanta this Friday? That could answer a lot of questions, if it is indeed a new DCP, it would make a lot of sense for it to be this new master.

OK, based on those picture comparisons, this is definitely a new restoration and the colors seem very close to the original colors but it could still very well just be the SE - the lightsabers weren't changed until 2004, so if they'd scanned the 97SE, you'd get the original lightsabers. And it seems likely, that they did a 4K restoration and that that is what they will be showing a DCP of in Atlanta this friday and we already know, that that will be the SE.

Assuming they are planning a BD release of this new master, it would still be good news, even if it was the SE, of course, especially if it was the 97SE, which had far less alterations and a proper 4K restoration of it would therefore be an ideal source for Despecialized or any such project - it would of course be better, if it was the original version and no such project would be necessary but I firmly believe, that with this new scan and with the current state of 35mm fan-preservations, we could have a true fan-restoration of the original version at the highest quality within a year.

Well, there will be people (me included) who may want to use this as a source for their own projects and so it is important to have some very high quality release in place - if uploading is a problem, I'm sure you could find someone to send a burned disc to, who would gladly upload it for you - I'd be very happy to do it (I have a 70mbps upload on my connection) but shipping it over-seas may be quite impractical.
