I personally define the terms by their semantic meaning -
Preservation - to preserve something is to make sure it stays in its current state - so scanning the film, not cleaning it and only correcting the colors to what is on the print is a preservation.

Restoration - to restore is to return something to a previously existing state - in this case then it would mean to scan the print, color-correct it to original colors, if there’s fading, and clean any dirt and scratches that happened to the print itself.

Alternatively restoration could mean to use whatever sources to get to the quality of an earlier generation copy but not to get something that is better than the original copy when it was new - anything beyond that isn’t, at least semantically, a restoration any more, so from this point of view, Legacy is neither a preservation, nor a restoration - the closest term IMO is Remastering - creating a new master, which may well be better than the original master.

Well, they don’t look that bad on their own - they just look waaaay worse than a decent bitrate file or even just a well-encoded low bitrate file - here’s a comparison of the 4GB version posted above with a well-encoded 5GB version someone (I forget who) made and posted on torrents with my blessing:

and here it is compared to my 7GB AVCHD version:

and here’s the 5GB vs 7GB (here, the difference is much smaller, of course, but the grain structure and fine detail is still better preserved in the 8GB version):

I don’t (like I said, I’ve never even seen it) but I’m sure someone does. And then yeah - with the changed scenes restored in a quality like this, it should be a piece of cake for me to despecialize it. I sure hope to get a grindhouse version first, because I really wanna watch the film before I start tinkering with it 😉

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

So, with the imminent release of The Force Awakens on Blu-Ray, I decided to drop everything else and start working on TFA Despecialized. I will be starting a new thread as soon as I have some samples to post. The plan is to make TFA look like it was shot immediately after ROTJ - this means getting rid of CGI characters and replacing them with puppets or prosthetic makeup, adding matte-lines and matte-boxes to all spaceship shots and probably re-shooting some with models or replacing some backgrounds with more hand-painted looking matte-paintings. Kylo Ren’s lightsaber should also be replaced with something that looks more hand-animated, like the old sabers - the jury’s still out on the cross-guard.
I would like to cooperate with Adywan and the rest of the Revisited team, because those guys already have experience with shooting models and stuff.
Since this is probably going to be very time-consuming and I expect it to take at least a couple of years, all other Despecialized efforts are on hold for now.
