Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

The shakiness of the Dewback in this shot always really bothered me, so I tried to mend it by having more of the picture from GOUT and only enhacing it with HD elements. The overall quality is therefore of course lower but I think it's worth it:

Unfortunately, I was so far unable to stabilize the Dewback in the shot where the heroes are entering the cantina :-(

I'm ok with using the Bluray as a source and starting with a new version. I would even suggest you output a 1080p output. It would be easy in premiere. You just replace your video with the 1080p source for the final render.

I think Harmy chose 720p because it blends better with stuff taken from GOUT and other sources that are not 1080p. Also, it helps to reduce whatever oversharpening and DVNR which seems to be present on the Blu-ray.

About the "watercolor-effect" thing at Vader's entrance, here's a comparison. (Harmy's on top, mine on bottom, downscaled to 720p)

And a closeup comparison which I've brightened a bit for it to match. Harmy's on left and mine on right.

Harmy's version is slightly blurrier, but I'd say the watercolor-effect is there on the HDTV version too.

Here's your picture compared with an unrestored 35mm scan:

Now, I really don't understand what the problem is? Less grain and more detail in the BD and HDTV can be put down to a 4 generation younger source and professional scan and I don't see any other difference.

I'm not dismissing what you're saying, I'm asking for more detail on it.

Well, it's not bad but not quite there, like all the recreations I've seen.

Oh and to that BD screenshot, again, I don't see what's supposed to be wrong with it. I'm not being an ass or anything, I really don't see it. I mean, I'm sure there was some DVNR applied there, because all the other versions I've seen of these shots, including some HD film scans, were pretty grainy but I don't think it looks bad.

I mean, just LOOK at the screenshot of R2 and 3PO just after they landed.  Yick.

What screenshots? If you mean screenshots from the Blu-Ray, that scene looks exactly the same in the broadcast, except in the broadcast the graininess of that scene produces a lot of compression where in the BD there are no compression artefacts that I can see.

OK, I'm going through v1.0 and I've made a huge decision. There are so many issues I want to address that I think it just might be better to start the editing process from scratch and make it v2.0.

I may still change my mind though, since it will mean redoing the colour correction from scratch including the blast frames.

I think though, that if I do it, I will work from the BD source, though I will need to re-encode it to a high bitrate 720p first. But that will give me an opportunity to pre-brighten the source and avoid some of the compression being brought up.
