Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

@Guspaz: Unfortunately not  - it's one of the last few things that still bother me a bit but I really wasn't able to fix it.

@Infinity: Yeah that's been fixed, including the weird jump that it does.

@animemaakuo: The AVCHD should be done in a few days. The BD in about a month I suppose.

@Space Kaijuu: I managed to improve that whole shot quite a bit but there is still some inevitable blurriness around the Dewback.

Info & Info Wanted: 'The Abyss'
Time

@Space Kaijuu: Titanic, like all of Cameron's movies since The Abyss (except Avatar, which was of course shot digitally) was shot full frame on 35mm film using Super35 aperture, with the exception of the submersible scenes, which were shot using Techniscope, so as to be able to shoot more material without the ability to change reels in the camera mounted outside the submersible. (Techniscope is a 2-perf format that shoots 2.33:1 with a normal lens, so it uses half the amount of film than anamorphic does.)

Shooting on 70mm (resp. 65mm) film is not only very expensive but also very difficult because of the huge heavy equipment needed for it, so film makers do it very rarely.

@SilverWook: The VHS release of Titanic was partially open matte, showing more at the top and the bottom but considerably less on the sides. I assume the LD was the same. They often crop significantly more of the bottom than of the top when cropping to 2.39:1 from Super 35, so a full open matte 4:3 would make the vertical framing all wrong but it does allow for a 16:9 open matte like they did with the 3D Titanic.

But both of the DVD releases of Titanic and the 2D BD were OAR, so I really wouldn't expect the Abyss BD to be open matte.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

@TiiN: Yes, there will be additional languages, including restored German tracks on ESB and ROTJ v2.0. Furthermore, there will be a complete German version of SW based on v2.1 including the German crawl, Greedo subtitles and credits. I'm not sure if Laserswert is planning on doing ESB and ROTJ as well.

@chyron: I'll see what my color correction does to those, it could mute them a bit but then again it might not, because when you mute reds too much, skintones go to hell.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

1991 US LD and 1997 Bravo TV are the same source; the 2004 DVD R1 and 2010 Blu A/B/C are the same source as the 1992 UK LD.

The implication is that the original source was lost/damaged/whatever, and so they used the same source that was used in the 1992 UK LD.

What do you mean it's the same source? Do you mean the same film print? If so, how did you find that out? Cropping is hardly a good enough indicator for judging this, as most prints have pretty much the same cropping as the oneg and the cropping seen in those pictures was done when mastering the discs and most likely has no information value whatsoever as to the cropping of the source prints.

I may be misunderstanding what you're saying but it seems that you're under the impression that they used a laserdisc transfer to make the Directors Cut. This of course is absolute nonsense - they made a new high definition scan from the original negative for the 2004 DVD release and probably reused the same master for the BluRay.

So I watched the rendered AVCHD and I've found around 20 things that I still want to fix. They are all tiny little things that will only take a really short time to fix, so I can't with clear conscience release this to the public. This should only add a few days before the upload of the AVCHD and will result in a much more polished product.

I too have been holding out for 2.1 - my fiance has never seen SW(!) and I am looking forward to her inaugural experience to be this one.

Harmy, I hope that you will consider doing a commentary track.  Even if all you do is blather randomly in real time, with occasional remarks of "I removed a bunch of crap here", or "I recomposited this", I think you understimate how interesting that would be to those of us who have been following this thread religiously for so long.  You could also remark about what was hard to fix, and what was easy to fix.  Or, what source you used to fix each scene.  Or, your thoughts on technical aspects of particular scenes after having worked so closely on them.  By now you probably know more about the nuts and bolts of the film than George does - your insights and observations are valued.

OK, I'll think about it. I do love watching films with commentaries (which is why I synced the ones from the BD to DeEd, so that I can listen to them while checking the DeEd video for errors) and it could be fun to do one of my own :-)

OK, the last thing to do before I can render the AVCHD is the v2.1 credits. I'm really trying not to leave anyone out but it's pretty hard. I'd like to include the person who sent me some blank discs a few months ago but I'm ashamed to admit that I can't recall who that was, so if that person could please shoot me a PM, I'd be very happy. Also if any of the people who were in the v2.0 credits (or Belbucus, b0bafett, Adywan or Negative1, whom I'll also be adding to the v2.1 credits) would like to be credited under a different name, please PM me as well.

If there's anyone I'm forgetting, please don't be ashamed to PM me also, even the smallest contribution counts and I'd really like to give credit where it is due.

Oh, yeah, the DTS HD file of hairy_hen's mix should definitely be lossless, what I meant was that if you guys want me to include the other mixes in lossless I'd be happy to as long as they're served on a silver platter.

I actually found out that I have Belbucus' mono mix restoration in lossless flac. But I don't know what to do with it - I doubt it can be used as is, plus it probably isn't GOUT synced (though it only needs a slight time-shift if it isn't). I could convert it to wav in Audacity but a wav file will be like 1GB, whereas the flac file is only 300MB, so converting to wav seems like a waste of space - isn't there any BD compatible lossless format that would give a similar size as the flac?

As of now, I only have hairy_hen's 5.1 in DTS HD. I thought I had the monomix in PCM wav somewhere but can't find it. I don't care for audio all that much and lossless makes no difference to me, so if you audio buffs want lossless audio, you'll have to provide it GOUT synced and ready to be muxed in. Someone told me that DTS HD MA 2.0 would be smaller than PCM, so I'd prefer them in that format.
