Empire of Dreams - what was your imagined Star Wars story...
Time
My ideal prequel trilogy would have depicted Anakin as a quiet, emotionally repressed drifter pilot with no knowledge of his past, his anger stemming from his sense of rootlessness. When he befriends Obi-Wan, he initially declines to take up Obi-Wan on his offer to become a Jedi and fight in the Clone Wars, which deal primarily a dying race of Darth Maul-esque creatures using cloning technology to keep their race alive and are trying to destroy the Republic for their oppression. Obi-Wan eventually persuades him, and as Anakin confronts the Dark Side, his personality gradually splits in two - the essential good half that is Anakin and the dark, mean, sadistic half that is Darth Vader, until finally the fragmentation causes the Vader personality to overwhelm and devour the Anakin personality. When Obi-Wan confronts the pre-mechanical Vader, after a spectacular fight, he throws down his lightsaber in a fashion similar to how Luke rejects the Emperor in ROTJ. Vader almost kills him, but what little bit of Anakin is still in him won't let him, so he hurls himself over the side and into the lava, only to find that death alludes him and fate leaves him as the half-maimed machine man villain we knew and loved from the old trilogy.

Oh and his lover, the mother of Luke & Leia, would have been a lady Jedi just to cut down on time constraints and leave out all that crap we put up with in AOTC about forbidden affairs 'cause my Jedi would not have believed in that "no love" junk.

Troy - for all your Trojan needs

Troy - who bothered with it and who didn't?

I saw it and while I didn't think it was as bad as I originally thought it would be, it's far from a classic. Still, 2004 saw crappier films.

Brad Pitt tried hard but couldn't quite overcome his miscasting as Achilles (I would have rather seen Karl Urban as Achilles). Eric Bana carried the film as Hector (at least until he got killed). Peter O'Toole was fine as Priam. Orlando Bloom played Paris as essentially a wimpy version of his Legolas and POTC character. Diane Kruger was easy on the eyes as Helen but Saffron Burrows (Andromeche, wife of Hector) was more alluring. Sean Bean was good but underused as Odysseus/Ulysses. Brian Cox went too far over the top to make Agamemnon the villain (though that was probably partially the fault of the screenwriters); Brendan Gleeson's Menelaus was badly misrepresented as a thuggis brute.

Watching the battles to storm the city of Troy reminded me of the Lord of the Ring movies when the Uruk-Hai and the Orcs tried to invade Helms Deep & Gondor, respectively. This isn't a criticism, just an opinion.

A Chinese Ghost Story
Time
Anyone ever see it or at least hear of it?

It's about this tax collector who falls in love with the ghost of a beautiful woman, only to find that the ghost if bound to a kind of supernatural pimp who uses the ghosts of beautiful women to lure men into her traps so she can devour them with a killer tongue. The beautiful ghost is about to be married off to a dark lord of the underworld, which prompts the tax collector to recruit a swordsman to help him fight the forces of darkness and free his beloved ghost.

Basically a fairy tale done up with a lot of fancy wire works and flamboyant lighting.

Beautiful Women

I like the girl who played the young version of Aunt Beru in "Episode II". It was a bad movie and the girl playing the young version of Aunt Beru only had like one word of dialogue ("Hello.") but I found her infinitely more alluring than Natalie Portman.

Watching "Spider-Man 2" I found the tall, lanky blonde girl Ursula (the daughter of Peter Parker's landlord) a lot more alluring than Kirsten Dunst, and I'm not sure why.

I really hope you were joking....

BTW, I saw LXG. I enjoyed it, though I thought the final battle really betrayed the low budget pretty badly.

No, I wasn't joking when I said Jessica's not beautiful. She's not even remotely cute.

Personally though, I think LXG got dumped on WAY too much.

Hayden replacing Sebastian Shaw in ROTJ

A scary thought came to me the other day. I realize that for most of us we have a good reason to be pissed off that Sebastian Shaw was replaced by Hayden Christensen at the end of ROTJ. But what about those kids or people that only see the new star wars (prequels and special editions)?

Screw the damn kids.

I'm guessing they cast Hayden because they thought he bore some kind of vague, passing resemblance to a younger Mark Hamill. Which may leave some to wonder why, when looking for the older version of Anakin in ROTJ they didn't find a guy who looked like an old version of Mark - or put Mark in prosthetic makeup like they did with Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover in "Back to the Future".

and back to the new fantastic four, while i was looking for pics found this image

maybe it should be in the beautiful women thread?

anyway, its from this site if you care http://sfstory.free.fr/films/fantasticfour.html

Jessica Alba is NOT beautiful. The fact that they cast her as the Invisible Woman is just ridiculous.

So, who here saw the film adaptation of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"?

Am I the only one who prefers the old ewok music?

don't know if this topic has been cover here or not but i just saw the DVD's this weekend and it really bothered me...

anyway, just thought i'd see if i was the only one with this view...

Perhaps we've been too hard on the old yub-yub music...

Are you drunk? Jack Nicholson gave the best performance of anyone in the 4 1990's batman movies. Although Mark Hamill is pretty good as the voice.

Although I do agree that he gave the best performance of anyone, he still didn't seem to fit the part as much as Hamill's did.

Keep in mind Jack did the Joker for one movie, Mark did the Joker for a little more than a decade.

Heralds (Heralds of Zildrog book)
Time

I was given this book once on Star Wars and mythology and the book goes on and on about the various mythological hero journey tidbits that George Lucas tried to use for Star Wars, and it listed the droids C-3P0 and R2 as the “heralds” who usually present the hero in question with the calling to an adventure. The book then goes to the Phantom Menace and it lists Padme as the herald who provokes Anakin’s journey from Tatioone to Coruscant and the path of Jedi training and darkness. I was like “How the hell is Padme a herald?” If anything I thought the continuity ridden Qui-Gon Jinn was the herald, seeing as how he was the one who set Anakin free and dragged him to Coruscant to fulfill that damned prophecy.

What do you all think?

The Things We Hate And Love Thread .
Time
When I worked as an usher at Regal Cinema, I used to hate cleaning up after the kids movies like "Shrek 2" because the amount of trash on the floor was just staggering. Messes were inevitable, but parents really need to work on teaching their kids better manners when it comes to eating at the movies and public places in general.

And don't get me started on the things that went on in OUR bathrooms...

Comic book movies - who says yes and who says no?

Oh my bad, I forgot someone else posted the Wolverine confirmation earlier. Sorry about that!

I heard that Mark Steven Johnson, the man who dragged Daredevil's good name through the mud with his craptacular 2003 film, is working on a Ghostrider movie with Nicholas Cage attached to star as the fire headed hero. After what he did to Daredevil this man should seriously be barred from doing any comic book related films.

And what is up with giving Daredevil's mentor, Stick, to Elektra in this new spin-off? Liberties are inevitable, but this is ridiculous. And what the hell were they thinking casting Jennifer Garner as Elektra?
