Yeah, but without that countdown why is everyone hurrying? Even dead Luke has to hustle and can’t just allow Rey to process her stuff on her own on the island for a few hours or days.

And I don’t think I’ll end up removing Luke’s line. I know it’s a parallel to Obi-Wan’s, but we’ll see. Don’t really have a problem with it and the scene may be chopped up enough.

OP updated with a fresh revision of my ideas, removing several and tweaking some. Rather than cut and paste and denote 90% of DominicCobb’s thread’s ideas, a last item refers to it.

Here’s my current idea for a crawl:

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

The iron grip of the FIRST ORDER has spread to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Kindled by the feat of Jedi Master Skywalker, the populace of countless worlds have risen in defiance.

As Rey, sole heir to the Jedi, continues her training under the ailing General Leia Organa, the fledging Resistance gathers intel to forge a path to freedom.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren searches relentlessly to unlock the secrets of his former master’s power, determined to suffocate any threat to his rule…

Me neither. I like it, even if I can’t quite picture it. I just remember Luke speaking about Palpatine stuff in what felt like an embedded way.

I suppose something like this could be nice:
“What are you afraid of?”
“Myself.”
Stern look
“Leia knew it, too.”
“She never told me/still trained me/whatever the exact line is.”
“Confronting [that] fear is the destiny of a Jedi… if you don’t face Palpatine, it will be the end of the Jedi.”

Thanks, RogueLeader, and I think that’d be great. I can at least serve as an MC to guide, compile and execute. Not judge, jury, or executioner, though.

I… don’t really have strong feelings yet about the Rey thing. I guess it depends on what can be done well. But I don’t feel that we need to necessarily hold to ‘canon’ for this one since it just seems so convoluted and hamfisted. At least with LOE, I had lore from 1983 to consider.

And as a random thought for now: does anyone know where we could find masked Kylo dialogue to the effect of “you were right”? I’d like to replace his line to Rey of “I never lied to you.”

Let’s play mad libs:

“You don’t just have power, Rey. You have his [funny noun]. You’re a [funnier noun].

power / Palpatine

Ewoks / Mary Sue

Clone DNA / bad experiment

stunning brown eyes / midichlorian

“You don’t just have power, Rey. You have his beauty. You’re an angel.”

^ Thanks, nl! It is hard to totally picture all of those scenes in that order, but once I can see the movie again I’m sure I’ll be in a better place to appraise it in terms of desirability and feasibility. Scene transitions can be difficult, but this film’s relentless BLAH pacing may allow for less polish than I’d usually strive for.

I can’t listen to the Emperor’s line right now, but that’s be amazing if it were able to blend in seamlessly after all.

I’m down with that idea, but that makes it even more necessary to come up with some way to communicate to the audience at the end that Palps is 100% for realsies dead this time, you guys - otherwise it’s just, “Well, we saw all his clone bodies earlier, clearly he’s just gonna get cloned again.”

Hmm, I’m not sure how this causes greater need for confirmation that he’s dead forever this time. It was already sorely needed to begin with! (Unless he represents the sort of evil that cannot be killed along with any one man and is never truly vanquished.)

Hey, Hal. I know that you have a life as us fan editors do too. But I was wondering that in the future, most likely when the film arrives on Blu-ray, since there’s no deleted scenes available, would you be interested if I offered you a pitch scenario of restructuring scenes in the narrative?

Of course! Don’t be shy.
