A new chip that could end the HD-DVD / Blu-ray battle before it even begins?!?!

My guess is that if they don't hurry up and get Blu-Ray titles out, it may not even be Vol. 1. Why? Apparently, when the Weinsteins left Miramax and formed The Weinstein Company, they took the video rights to several titles with them, including the Kill Bills. Now, it may be the situation that BVHE still has the right to release the Kill Bills, but only in a limited window of opportunity. As we all know, there were more people who liked Vol 1 than Vol 2, so BVHE may simply be pushing Vol 1 to capitalize on the investment in Blu-Ray.

My understanding was that Big Love was about a polygamous sect of Mormonism if not the official church. Two major clues: It's set in Utah, and more importantly, the two slutty girls at the fast food restaurant were snickering about the devoted followers of Moroni. I might have been putting 2 and 2 together and getting 22, but I do think the show is based on the many offshoots of Mormonism in Utah/Idaho who still practice polygamy, even if the practice is unsanctioned by the mother church.

They're offshoots, alright; just don't call them sects. There are no sects of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (the official name); Mormonism doesn't come in different "flavours". One of the tenets of the Mormon church is "being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates in obeying, honouring and sustaining the law." Since polygamy is illegal, the Church does not practice it. End of story.

You know, "Big Love" is yanking off the covers of Mormonism's polygamous adherants. I'd LOVE to see a group of Hollywood producers who aren't afraid of Scientologist intimidation and retribution create a similar show that totally exposes that cult-fraud in a similar way. Or maybe Morgan Spurlock can infiltrate the religion for 30 days and document it on film. Now THAT would be the best film that would never see the light of day.

Except that Big Love isn't about Mormons. Mormons stopped practicing polygamy in the late 19th century, and it was officially renounced by the church in 1890 Link. Now, there are some groups that call themselves "Mormon fundamentalists", but the truth of the matter is that there simply ain't such a thing. Polygamy in the Mormon church was never about it being a cornerstone of the religion.

This is precisely why Big Love has to carry a disclaimer at the beginning of every episode. There are many other cultures that practice polygamy throughout the world, but as soon as some Hollywood hotshot creates a TV show about polygamy, everyone automatically assumes it's about Mormons. This is a prime example of (1) Why I consider a little knowledge to be a dangerous thing; and (2) Why I don't engage in religious persecution.

All a Canadian has to say to rebut any American's insult is:

I have mounties and maple syrup, what do you have? George Bush, world-class obesity, and a whole lotta psychos with guns!

All in jest, k, fellaz?

Yeah, except world-class obesity is almost as much of problem in Canada, depending on where you live. Same goes for psychos with guns; it ain't quite as idyllic as Michael Moore painted it in Bowling for Columbine.
