In a word, yes. Flash Gordon (1980) is a prime example of being campliy self-aware. The screenplay was by Lorenzo Semple Jr., who knows from camp; he was head writer on the Batman TV series of the late 1960s. They chose Sam J. Jones based on his looks, and surrounded him with very talented actors, most of whom were in on the joke. The production values on the film were extremely high, which leads me to believe that Dino DeLaurentiis may not have been in on the joke.
