Worst Movies of 2003
Time
My problems with The Cat in the Hat are myriad. First, I don't think the character was scary enough; you're supposed to have this giant cat who walks into Conrad and Sally's house and effectively turns their lives upside down because both don't know how to have fun on a rainy day. Mike Myers didn't convey this. Second, the movie version whacks you over the head with characterisations of the kids that are obnoxious and far too obvious; Conrad is hell on wheels and Sally is a control freak, whereas in the book, both seem stuck in the "I have nothing to do" mode, which is the way they should have left it. Finally, the film is far too adult; I'm not going to take my kids to a movie that references Playboy centrefolds when referring to the children's mother and has Mike Myers spouting lines like "Dirty hoe!"
Keep in mind that I haven't seen the whole film yet, nor do I intend to, but I have seen more than half, working where I do. It's just awful.

DVDs of 2004?
Time
Personally, I want Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Lost in Translation, Time Bandits, The Critic: The Complete Series, Planet of the Apes 35th Anniversary Edition, Intolerable Cruelty, Spy Kids 3D, the Zeffirelli Hamlet, The Final Countdown SE, Brother Bear, and hopefully we'll see The Iron Giant SE, Wizards and THX-1138 this year.

Top Ten of 2003.
Time
OK; now that I've seen RotK, I can update my list and order it somewhat:
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Finding Nemo
Dirty Pretty Things
PotC
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
RotK
Something's Gotta Give-- what a smart and funny movie!
School of Rock-- finally, a film about music in schools that isn't schmaltzy

Now I just need one more movie to make 10....

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: Return of the King (spoilers)
Time
Finally saw RotK last night. While I enjoyed it, I found a couple of elements to be a bit off. Those would be the idea of connecting Arwen's fate to how long the ring lasts (silly) and the orc who bears more than a passing resemblance to Sloth from the Goonies. Both of these briefly took me right out of the movie, but overall, it was fun. I'm still of the opinion that Fellowship is the best of the 3.

Lord of the Rings...what's the deal?

I think actually the main problem (and this could not really be helped while remaining true to the source material) is that there are no characters of colour or any real diverse ethnicity. There isn't much appeal for black audiences, its a very white story filled with very white characters. Though I'm glad the at PJ managed to keep in the Easterlings and Southerns while managing to move far enough away from the Asian and Arab stereotypes which they obviously are meant to be in the books.

Both very valid points, and both products of Tolkien's upbringing. My parents were both born and raised in post-WWII England, when the education system that taught Tolkien was still very much in place. Racism at the time was very casual, and the sexes were almost always segregated for educational purposes, except for those who couldn't afford it and were taught in a lesser manner.

Sky Captain and the World of tomorrow!!! Seen the Trailer?!?
Time
Joe Six Pack is shorthand for your average idiot who (a) only wants his movies to "fill his TV set'; (b) won't watch B&W movies because "they didn't know how to make movies back then"; and (c) doesn't watch movies with subtitles because he doesn't want to read when he goes to the movies. I'll leave it @ that, because I'll only get more bitter and vitriolic if I continue.

The trailer looked like desaturated colour to me (a la Saving Private Ryan). As for people hating black-and-white films, it's a mindset I refuse to comprehend, much like the one in people who hate movies with subtitles. Go watch your J6P fullscreen DVDs on your widescreen TVs and wonder why you have grey bars on the sides; I have no time for you.

Worst Movies of 2003
Time
I'm not going to quantify this one, since I hope that none of us have had to sit through 10 awful movies this year. Anyhoo, here goes:
1. Bad Boys II-- arguably the most incomprehensible piece of dreck Michael Bay has ever put his name on, and that includes Pearl Harbor
2. Daredevil-- can anyone say "You missed the point?"
3. Freddy vs. Jason-- by-the-numbers slashfest with nothing new or original to add to the genre. Even the remake of TCM was scarier.

Go to it, boys. I want to know what films to avoid.

Top Ten of 2003.

Top 10 thus far (not in any particular order):
PotC
Dirty Pretty Things
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas (this one really got no respect-- a great little film)
Finding Nemo
Kill Bill Vol. 1
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Something's Gotta Give-- what a smart and funny movie!
School of Rock-- finally, a film about music in schools that isn't schmaltzy

The last two places are being held for RotK (which I still haven't seen all of) and whatever else I deem worthy. I think it's time to go and start the logical antithesis of this thread.
