George Lucas no longer cares

Not all of us think the prequels suck, Lord Peeler; they just don't hold up as well to scrutiny as the Original Trilogy does. I enjoyed both TPM and AOTC, and am looking forward to Ep III. They just won't have the same special place in my heart as the OT does. I am not a rabid collector of toys, videogames, books and other merchandise; I am a movie fan, and as such want to see both versions available on DVD. Quit trying to pigeonhole us; we are individuals with differing experiences with the SW franchise.

We have such a rich culture and it would be a pity to lose all those 'first steps on the moon' for each era of film.

StarWars is such a nice example, because the original theatrical cuts are - as George Lucas stated himself for years - indeed timeless. Every time I watch them, I'm so totally awed by what they managed to pull off back then - most the SFX in ANH look so 'not 70s', imho. It's such a pity George Lucas is so ashamed of it.

I completely agree with you, MSD; it's all about preserving history.

Movies that have never been released in original form on DVD

No, but they don't have to. I'm not officially a member of any boycott, but I will not be buying them when they come out. It seems that your problem, Lord Peeler, is that you'd love to put us into nice, tidy little packages and categories that suit your flaming ways. My refusal to buy the Star Wars SEs is based in the belief that when a film is altered, both versions should be made available to the public, and not make up some half-assed story about as far as you're concerned, the originals were rough versions and this is the final version. If Spielberg could release both versions of E.T., regardless of which version he prefers, why can't Lucas release both versions of the Star Wars Trilogy? Answer that and I might consider your arguments worth the memory they're hogging on this server.
