.: Moth3r's PAL DVD project :.
Time
Thanks Rebelscum- I haven't seen the other versions that Rikter has. I believe that only Star Wars and SPFX: The Making of Empire were released on laserdisc in the US? Rikter, if you read this, perhaps you could let us know.

I know that there are Japanese laserdisc versions of the main documentaries, although again, I haven't seen these. I don't know what other content is included with regards to trailers, short features etc. There was some discussion in the (now defunct) Executor boxset thread, as I recall.

In any case, I suspect that the limiting factor is the source material, rather than the format, so I don't think you would see much difference between laserdisc and VHS in this case. The picture from my PAL VHS tapes is pretty good (they have hardly been watched since I bought them). I know that there has been a lot of PAL vs NTSC discussion and debate in these forums, and I don't really wish to turn Moth3r's thread into another rendition of that I will however be interested to see how my versions stand up against some of the other versions out there.

Cheers,

Goose

Thanks Moth3r,

I like to think I am being both complimentary and complementary....

For everyone else reading, my project is a PAL capture of all the supplementary material from the PAL Executor VHS boxset. Pinnacle DV500 capture card, Adobe Premiere, After Effects and Encore.

Star Wars is pretty much finished, Empire well under way and Jedi in planning.

Anyway, without wishing to hijack this thread as this is kind of off topic, here are a couple of small samples from the Star Wars DVD (mainly for Moth3r's benefit):

R2D2 from "The Making of Star Wars":

I don't know if you have a copy of RowMan's NTSC material available, and I haven't yet grabbed any screens from my copy, but this is much, much sharper. Bear in mind this is a JPEG of a PowerDVD screengrab.

Also a link to one of the DVD menu transitions (about 1mb, DivX encoded AVI):

HERE

The file has come out a little dark in the compression to DivX, but you get the idea.

Like I say, I appreciate this is a bit off topic, so I will look to start a separate thread in due course. Comments/ criticisms gratefully accepted.

Thanks,

Goose

DVD Covers (Eps. I,II,III, V & VI)

Hi there,

Newbie here, humbly offering my first DVD cover for your persual. I knocked this up a little while ago, but have only recently joined these (marvellous) forums.

Sorry it isn't more black ink friendly..... The image posted here is also quite heavily compressed and consequently lacking in sharpness, especially the text. The full size image is far better.

Clone Wars, Volume II- with due respect to Rikter, whose original Clone Wars cover, available in his torrent on MySpleen, gave me the font and "official" text on the spine and rear cover.

Well, I guess that means I don't have a duff copy of an otherwise decent tape!

I will concentrate on the rest of the supplemental material for now. It's looking very good and should require minimal adjustment from the raw capture (I need to play with the levels a bit to improve black levels etc). I was kind of thinking it might be nice to have a decent transfer of this PAL stuff to complement Moth3r's outstanding work....

Thanks for the replies!

Darth Editous, I'd be interested to hear back from you regarding the quality of your copy compared to mine. Specifically, the picture on mine is poorly defined, overly dark and has a definite blue cast to it. As the other docs on my tapes do not suffer from this when captured, I assume it is the tape and not my equipment that is at fault.

Oh, and you're right, the artwork and other extras that came with this set were great. The official DVD release was a real missed opportunity, IMO.

Cheers,

Goose

Hi all,

First post from the usual long time lurker.... Great forum!

I am currently in the process of capturing the extras from my PAL VHS Executor tapes. I have a copy of RowMan's extras disks to compare with my captures and so far the PAL stuff is of much better quality than the NTSC (which is not belittling RowMan's terrific work- just the source material).

However, the "From Star Wars to Jedi" tape I have is of very poor picture quality. I seem to remember that it always looked a bit rubbish, but part of me suspects that my tape may be on the way out.

Can another owner of this set confirm what the quality of their "SW to Jedi" tape is ilke? Of all the preliminary captures I have done, this is the only documentary that is better on RowMan's NTSC disks.

By the way, I am working with a Pinnacle DVD500 DV capture card and Adobe Premiere.

Thanks all. Glad to have finally joined the forums!
