STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

A protocol droid being able to feel pain ( or the appearance of pain) and a walking battery being programmed to feel pain are two entirely different things. Protocol droids were made to have a human like appearance and , in the case of 3P0 especially, human traits. These things would have been programmed into them because of their function: to converse with other life forms. A Gonk droid is just a walking battery. Why bother programming any emotions into something like that?

One the main reasons i hated that scene from the first time i saw it is the god awful voice is was given. Suddenly a gonk droid can talk and say “no”? It was given a babyish vocal and sounded ridiculous. If that was supposed to show the droids peril in Jabbas palace, then it fell completely flat and made something that could have been perilous into another facepalm humour moment. And, if it was meant to be humorous, it failed because no one laughed during the many showing i saw in '83, and this was back when the audience got involved with the film, cheering, clapping etc. The droid being pulled apart had the same stupid kiddy vocalising. That type of silly-vocal style plagued ROTJ and then grew with the prequels (and then the new=SE with obi-wan’s howl). Then we have salacious crumb, Chewies Tarzan yell, the ewok during the speeder chase…Even R2 suffered with his now baby like sounds. Ridiculous sound effects/ vocals. These things have to be changed. There are so many parts of ROTJ that just seem like a failed, comedic parody of Star Wars.

That’s why I love you, Ady. Even if I don’t completely agree with a change, you always have a darn good reason for doing it. 😃

I’m going to miss the loss of the droid torture. It may have been a bit too comedic for some, but I don’t think it particularly ruined anything. I thought how it transitioned from the No, No, No to the Wooo of the Lapti Nek scene was great. Forget Jedi Rocks.

And I’m not sure what to think about the new ending. I’m sure however Ady pulls it off will look fantastic. It’s just I liked seeing the happy ending with everyone together celebrating.

Idea: Battlestar Galactica Pilot in Sensurround!
Time

So there’s now a very nice HD version of the original Battlestar Galactica movie on Blu-Ray with the 1.1 Sensurround track. Unfortunately, the very booming LFE track was not ported over to the full-length pilot movie as it appeared in the series Box Set. It’s rather anemic in comparison. Additionally, the video on the widescreen version of the pilot in the set appears to simply be zoomed in from the 1.33:1 master resulting in lots of aliasing and other issues. There’s also the dreaded teal tint.

So what I’m planning to attempt is this:

Replace the LFE on the pilot’s 5.1 soundtrack with the LFE from Sensurround version where applicable.
Utilize the superior video of the movie version of the film, splicing in sections cut out from the widescreen pilot disk.
For the segments from the widescreen tealified version, use Dr. Dre’s color match tool to hopefully get a close approximation of the original film’s color.

I’ll probably do the Sensurround version for the non-widescreen edition of the pilot too as that won’t require any video work.

Any interest?

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects

I think you guys are all misunderstanding *** entertainment. They make it very clear that you are not being charged for the discs, you are being charged as compensation for the money that they spent to put the set together. Whether they are making a profit or not is impossible to tell (it is highly probable that they are), but selling artwork is not a crime, even if it is of copyrighted material. Therefor, *** has done nothing illegal. The only issue is morality, which I will admit is shaky in this circumstance, but as far as legality, there is really nothing to worry about with these people.

I’d love to see that argument for selling bootleg Blu-Rays stand up in court. IT WON’T!

Thanks, I’m happy to know that someone appreciated my work!

Are you going to work on the 4k mastered from the original camera negatives blu ray released by arrow? It has one major issue and it is grain reduction. Side note what’s your latest regrade and where can i find updates on your regrades?

Actually, there’s been no grain reduction, according to the guy who encoded the disk. The original photography is just a bit soft in spots. The Scream transfer has likely been artificially sharpened. Someone claims to have taken the Arrow version and put it into After Effects and boosted the sharpness to get it to look virtually the same as the Scream Factory.

Info Wanted: Current issues with Star Wars 2011 Blu-Ray audio?
Time

Now that there are two high quality versions of a few different versions of the original Star Wars audio tracks (HairyHen’s original, DTS theatrical mix), I’m wondering if it would be worth trying to patch out various sections to try and fix issues that exist in the 2011 6.1 audio track.

That said, I’m trying to compile an up-to-date listing of issues with the track. Any specifics come to mind? I’ve heard one rumor that the surrounds were accidentally swapped in the detention block shootout but haven’t been able to confirm. Curious to know what all still could be improved upon.

Proper way to crop out black bars in Adobe Premiere?
Time

Hello all. I’m currently working on an edit of the original Star Wars in Adobe Premiere. What I’d like to do is crop out the black bars before rendering out a lossless AVI and then add back black bars when finally encoding to a Blu-Ray compliant file. I’m thinking this may help me avoid any artifacts in the black bar area from any of the multiple sources I’m using.

So I’m wondering what is the best way to do this without losing any image area. I’ve read I should change the sequence settings to 1980x800 but I think I’ve seen others do 1980x810 in the past. Anyone have any expertise in this area?

PUBLIC SERVICE COMMENT: Since Adywan didn’t set a date, but a month… we should all assume the date is June 30th. Then we can all be surprised if it hits earlier. 😃

Do I dare comply with this logical post and practice that thing called patience, as opposed to doing what others have done and react with an incredible amount of self-centered privilege and entitlement???

Tune in June 30th or maybe sooner for… no. I’m just gonna wait, nothing more, nothing less. 😃

OMG, can’t we at least get an update on what’s going on?! Has the Wampa escaped? Did Disney send bounty hunters after Adywan? Please, some let me know in the next five minutes. LIVES ARE AT STAKE!

Neverar's A New Hope Technicolor Recreation (Final Version Released!)
Time

My apologies if I asked this question many moons ago, but were you able to remove the “ghost” Luke compositing error in one shot from the Lars homestead? There was some odd error in the Blu-Ray footage that had a ghostly still frame of Luke standing in an empty door in the scene where Lars asks where Luke went for the morning.

Since that post Adywan hasn’t posted anything new. WHAT’S GOING ON ?!? IS HE STILL ALIVE ?!?

Maybe he’s busy working on ESB:R…

I’m gonna wager a guess that MalaStrana was being sarcastic 😉

So was I…

Ah yes, the ironic double-sarcastic anti-joke - the lowest form of humour. 😛

Humor. It is a difficult subject. It is not logical.

Info Wanted: anyone doing restorations of 80s cartoon shows?

if they could or wouldn’t mind of course

Seriously, not to be rude, but your chances of getting someone to just make these “fixes” for you are probably pretty nonexistent. The amount of time and effort such an undertaking would take could be massive. It’s not some simple little thing someone could whip together for you in no time. Your best bet would be to try and teach yourself how to do some of this work. The Adobe Suite can work wonders on some material. You might be surprised at what you’re capable of.
