I know I shouldn’t bring this up again but, I did just realize something. Since you’re using Topaz to improve the existing 2011 Blu-Ray for ANH:R HD, why not attempt the same for ESB:R?

That is if you want to do it, as it is your choice and not mine, or anyone else’s.

(In some of the shots where Leia turns around to rescue Luke from Cloud City, the lighted buttons in the Falcon’s cockpit bleeds together.)

Didn’t you just ask this?

Yeah I know, but when I was reading back the update on ANH:R HD about how Ady was using Topaz to clean-up the 2011 Blu-Ray (when it was still on native 1080p) to improve the image quality for the same resolution, I thought about that when I was thinking that Ady used the 2004 DVD to create ESB:R, before he used Topaz to upscale from 720p to 1080p.

If i had used the 2004 DVD then it would have only been 480p, not 720p

I didn’t know a 1080p blu ray could be downscaled to 720p and question I have is why was it isn’t that a downgrade?

I thought that wouldn’t be that hard for some team to do to improve the films cgi

While it’s true that it’s more accessible than ever to render fairly realistic looking materials and 3D models, we don’t have access to any of the original CGI assets used in the movies, so first you’d need to recreate everything (every character, planet, vehicle, prop etc.) to a realistic level of detail. Notice that a lot of the CG fan-films on YouTube mostly stick to what’s able to be ripped from Battlefront 2 to avoid doing this. This is already a monumental undertaking, but even with all the assets you’d be far from done - every scene would require painstakingly arranging your new props to match the original ‘set’, lighting it, animating all the moving parts, matching the camera moves… We’re talking a time investment of years for a large team. And that’s without even mentioning how you’d need to either digitally recreate every live-action extra (think of all the Lucasfilm/ILM staff members hidden in the opera scene) or cast and costume your own replacements for them. And then even with the best execution in the world, it’d still inevitably not quite fit with the non-redone parts of the movie.

Oh that’s too bad because yes the original trilogy cgi aged horribly but the prequel trilogy aged even worse because it’s in most of the prequel films. 😦

I’m surprised that there isn’t a cgi fan edit team that would update the cgi of both the prequels and good cgi scenes from the original trilogy like bespin etc.

This doesn’t exist because it would be a massive undertaking to redo the special effects of a movie trilogy with a budget of $343 million and a project with a budget of $10 million. Anyone with the means to do something like this would not be wasting their time on a legally grey fan project they could never be paid for.

Yeah but doesn’t unreal engine 5 make things a little easier and looks extremely realistic. I thought that wouldn’t be that hard for some team to do to improve the films cgi. I get what your saying about wanting to be paid to do it I just thought there were fanboys and fangirls who’d do it because they are fans and would love to improve the look of the films that’s all.

If I remember correctly Adywan did consider doing it and did some testing but it was too much work for something that ultimatly looked worse than no glow.

Really I’m surprised because a fan did the glow for the prequels lightsabers on YouTube and it looked great.

This video?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dkGJxercO4

The ambient glow only works when the subject is fully lit, like in that video. Try doing it during the carbon chamber duel and it is impossible unless you recreate each character using CG & 100% match their moves because there is no visual information on Vader (especially his helmet) for the most part & other areas of each character. I did many test and decided it’s just not worth all the work, especially when so many shots would be impossible to convincingly add any ambient glow.

And there will be no HDR/ Dolby Vision colour grade. I see people ask this a lot, along with asking for a Dolby Atmos sound mix. I’m just a guy working on a home PC and not in a fully equipped professional studio. I just don;t have the facilities to be able to do things like this.

Too bad about the limitations I understand wish it was possible for it to be done. also no worries on it not having a hdr grade it would be nice but if you don’t have a way to it you don’t have a way to do it. Then the only questions I have is is it possible to increase the gb to 50gb that way it isn’t suffering from compression issues or is that not possible. Would a deepfake of the return of the Jedi version of palpatine work in empire strikes back revisited if anyone attempted to do it or is that not technically possible for anyone. also is there a way to deepfake the empire strikes back vader voice for the movies and shows where James Earl Jones sounds off like rogue one. Oh I almost forgot my last question is it possible for you to update the cgi shots that actually were good in the original trilogy with something like unreal engine 5 like cloud city the return of the Jedi celebration etc.

@SpacemanDoug on the blu ray you mentioned the lee Harvey Oswald ep being uncut is that the same for the evil leader and the trilogy or no?

Lee Harvey Oswald is uncut on the UK BD which I managed to get a rip off, the US BD is two parts

Evil Leaper II and Trilogy: Part II have been in two parts since the old Universal DVDs and all worldwide BDs are that way too

I made reconstructions of both of those episodes using NBC VHS footage and BD footage

So sadly the footage in higher quality is lost then. 😦

For the latter two I mentioned yes

I don’t get how any footage from the original airings can be completely lost. I mean really two episodes how was there that much of a mess up?

My theory is Universal forgot to restore them to their feature length versions for their initial DVD (due to lack of care) and it’s possible (however still up in the air) that the elements for those versions of the episodes were destroyed in the 2008 Universal vault fire

Oh that would be a shame. 😦

@adywan Is it possible for you to do a hdr grade for your revisited Star Wars trilogy Updating the good cgi effects with modern cgi like cloud city etc. maybe even updating sly snootles just her to look a bit better and making the lightsabers look how they do in the sequel films? If not I understand just was wondering that’s all. Only posting here as well as the dm because I didn’t know if you answered dms.

The re-rotoscoped lightsabers in TESB:R already look very nice to me. You mean you want the glow to illuminate a little more onto the characters and environments?

Yes that on top of the re-rotoscoping.
