If she ends up even considering that there might be truth behind Scientology (I grant it a capital letter grudgingly- I don't think it deserves the recognition), I will personally put her down. Wikipedia has a particularly hilarious article about the teachings of Scientology, and I strongly recommend it for a good laugh. It really is discouraging that people can actually be persuaded to believe this stuff.

Re: "The man." I've heard it used both ways. Either that or maybe I misconstrue the meaning when people say "Keep the man down." Are they keeping the big corporate CEOs down? I don't really get that, if that's the case. I always thought it referred to the general populace in that context. If that's not the case, then it's your point.

I'm not really going to attack you, Gaffer, because while I defend the logic behind society's inhibitions, I don't defend the inhibitions themselves. It's like saying "I don't like what you're saying, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it." There's a connection there, but I'm too lazy to point it out. I'm the first person to say "Merry Christmas," because I hate all the PC "Happy Holidays" bullshit that they're flouting these days. If I want to say "Christ" or "Christmas," I'm going to say it goddamn it. A certain amount of cynicism is present in my posts to Adam, because I think that some of society's inhibitions are silly. But not all.

And of course, as soon as you venture into the realm of the feminine image and all these girls everywhere starving themselves half to death and layering makeup on their faces to try to look like someone out of fashion magazines, only a total doofus (enter Stinky) could really try to disagree with you there. It's a goddamn epidemic (and for those of you who want to argue this point, take a look at the number of cases of anorexia nervosa since the early 1950s. You'll see a trend.)

If you ask me, like Adam, why talking about this stuff makes people uncomfortable or snappish, then I'll give you a whole slew of reasons. If you ask me what I think of this, I'll tell you that it's because people are silly (as I just have). Your "question" (or point, as the case may be) isn't the same as Adam's, and there's nothing I want to refute in your argument.

Let's just establish something right now. There's a difference between being an individual and being fucking weird. Talking about that kind of thing crosses that line.

Blame culture. Blame conditioning. Blame society. Go join a hippy camp and lament the work-a-day world where "the man" is crushed by the oppressive government and cultural boundaries. Then go tell the Muslims that they shouldn't get so worked up about people drawing their Prophet (which, in itself, is against their religion) in unflattering ways (which is just plain sacrelige) because the cartoonists are just being individuals, and expressing themselves as such. And don't blame me when they light you on fire and fill you full of holes (not necessarily in that order). When you do things differently, or have quirks, you're an individual. When you do things that are offensive to society, you're a jackass and a creep (to that society). If you publish cartoons about the Prophet, you're not necessarily a jackass or a creep, but the Muslims sure think you are. If you talk openly about stuff that other people find to be distinctly no-go topics, then they think you are a jackass and a creep.

These are societal labels. One cannot be a jackass and/or creep, except in the eyes of others. You can take that as a small victory if you want, or you can realize that it's what others think of you that makes you what you are in this society.

Be smug. You are comfortable with your body, and maybe they aren't. Or maybe they just have the common sense and decency not to make it a matter of public record.

(Note: The author in no way supports the actions of radical Muslim groups, and is actually really disgusted by the whole affair.)

As an addendum, it strikes me that it's perfectly acceptable to talk about eating/drinking. Ergo, the rule of thumb you should use is that if an organ involved in a particular function is typically concealed beneath clothing, you really shouldn't talk about it. Otherwise, fair game.

EDIT: What the- I hit the wrong button. Didn't mean to double post, but oh well.

A certain amount of discretion should always be observed when talking about bodily functions or the fulfillment of bodily needs.

Take, for example, the need to expel waste. You don't casually bring up in a conversation: "Man, I just took the biggest dump," or "I love taking a piss, it's such a relief." The same goes for the fulfillment of other needs/urges (depending on your perspective) such as masturbation. It's one of those private things that you just keep to yourself. It's not pleasant to talk about, so people don't, and let's face it- the world is not 100% mature. People are often uncomfortable talking about sex, intimacy, what have you. It is partially for the sake of these people that you don't talk about these things, and partially because of cultural conditioning.

You can rage against society and culture all you want, but that won't change what is and will be for a long time. Maybe you're a non-conformist, but in this case, you basically do so to the exclusion of having non-extremist friends and normal relationships if you bring this sort of thing up a lot.

EDIT: For the record, recent statistics state that 96% of males do it. I don't know the female statistics, and I won't hazard a guess.

You don't actually believe that guys and girls can just be friends? You don't think it's possible? That's hilarious.

There's no point in getting into an argument about this, because neither side can really argue their point. It's a fundamental difference of opinion. Still, I think it's really funny. I know that guys and girls aren't honest about their feelings towards one another all the time, but the idea that there's no such thing as a platonic relationship is enough to make me laugh. Hey, maybe it's true for you- maybe you just want in the pants of every girl you like in any sense. Doesn't work that way for me.

Fundamental difference in opinion.

Incidentally, before you suggest it, I don't want into the pants of any guy, anywhere. I'm straight, let's get that on the table right there so you can exclude it from the witty retort I see coming.

Well, let's not talk about Adam like he's not here and watching this. Adam, attempting to be respectful to your situation, that this is really a capital screwup. If you really had the kind of respect for women that you claim you do, I don't think you'd have even started along this line, much less kept it up for... how long has it been? Three weeks? A month? Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe you just have a really fucking bizarre and malicious sense of humour, but making girls get so pissed off that they explode at you isn't something I typically do for fun.

That being said, I'm not you, and you're not me. Maybe you're being sincere, but if you are, man, you have some issues. I just don't believe you. I'm sure you don't really care about my opinion, which is why I'm not going to say anything nasty about you for saying all kinds of nasty crap to my friend. Stop now, act like you describe- with respect and dignity- and hey, maybe you'll be forgiven. Grovelling won't get you there.

I'm an opportunist. I see a cheap shot, I take it. I also feel compelled to say something about him being such a consistent, perfect asshole. Nobody with a modicum of integrity would stoop so low for so long just to say "Nyah, gotcha" to anyone else unless they are an extremely petty person. I mean, take your pick, but wow.

Let's start off by saying that yes, the church fight between Tifa and Loz basically won the movie. Though the fight between Cloud and Sephiroth was also pretty good, there was a lot of craziness going on there that could've been done away with. Could have. Really, I didn't mind the excessiveness.

This isn't really going to be a serious post, just reiterating what I said earlier about fundamental differences in opinion about what makes a movie good. When you take away "looks" and "sounds," all you really have is that people are watching the characters they've come to love being brought to life. When you add looks and sounds, they are being brought to life in incredibly impressive and commendable detail with good voice acting. The movie takes on a sort of unspoken story of its own because you know all about these characters. You know their history together, you know the perils they faced and the battles they fought. You are these characters, because you've been through the game and you know what it's about. This movie lets you relive a little of that, even if the story is inferior to the game.

The fact of the matter is that some people can still appreciate that beautiful outer shell, independant of the core that may or may not house. They appreciate the shell because they know that it was part of the clam at one point, and that clam was at one point a fabulous thing that they will probably never see again. Seeing that same shell decorated, enhanced, fortified, and beautified, still makes it great. For some people. Obviously not for you, and, well, that's fine. That's where we differ.

This argument falls in line with your "Love it because it's Final Fantasy" argument. Well, it's true.

And there you have it. Some people can appreciate a good thing, even if it was preceeded by and associated with an even better thing. Also, while making your points, I hope you keep in mind that insulting the intelligence of others by reducing their carefully cultivated linguistic skills to the parody that is internet slang doesn't actually reinforce your points, but merely acts to exacerbate differences of opinion by making it personal. Let's try to discuss the topic at hand like the civilized, rational people that we allegedly are.

Wow, Jaster, that was the most intelligent thing I've read in a long time, no joke. You took many of my arguments to school, although I don't agree with some of your points.

You can insult me all you like by claiming that I'm among the people for whom this movie was tailored, but I don't see how that could possibly be insulting. Yes, I like things that are awesome. So does much of the main-stream media consumers. That's why the movie was so successful. You know what would have really sucked? If for all the fight scenes, everyone lined up on their respective sides of the battlefield, ran at one another and whacked each other with their weapon or shot or whatever, then went back to their side. You want realism? Go find a different genre. What the hell do you want from Cloud, who is wielding a weapon of his size in the first place?

As for your argument of the plot being a big let down, you're right, it did follow the Final Fantasy game that had, arguably, the deepest and best plot of them all. Not only is it hard to fill those shoes, but it's hard to do so in an hour and a half of screen time when the game itself took days.

It's clear that you and I differ fundamentally on several points that simply cannot be reconciled, so I agree to disagree, and whether or not you do is up to you. However, as a final point, I'd like to say that you're the first person I've heard complain more than passingly about the plot, and give the movie anything worse than a "really good." Everyone I know (all of whom have, for the record, played the game through to completion, and many of them even went through the excruciating process of breeding the mighty gold chocobo) loved the movie, even if they thought the plot was nothing special. This is not a point I debate, by the way- the plot was nothing special.

Regardless, I can see that I'm going to have to be more careful with the arguments I make now that I know that there are people on these forums that can formulate a logical counter to them. My hat goes off to you.

EDIT: As an additional note, towards the whole argument of getting shot in the face and having a scratch, this is pretty consistent throughout the entire movie. You'll note in the final motorcycle scene, Cloud slices the long-haired secondary villain in the face, twice, and it does virtually nothing. He also kicks the short-haired guy (Loz?) into the motorcycle, which explodes. This is an accurate representation of the HP system at work, which they really didn't try to disguise. Sephiroth also slashes Cloud so hard that it propels him straight up to the top of a building of several stories before the actual fight proper begins between those two. If you're going to talk about issues with realism and such, at least bring up things like this. Getting shot in the head is really just one of many instances where someone takes something they shouldn't be able to.

There was a storyline? I must have missed that among all the ass-kicking and sweet effects. Honestly, in terms of coming up with stories (for movies and animes, not necessarily for video games), I don't really give the Japanese much credit. I take everything with a grain of salt, because their culture is vastly different from ours, and as anyone who has been to Japan will tell you, Japanese TV is terrible. This is a generalization, of course; there are animes, movies, etc. out there, made in Japan, with good plots, but I simply don't put as much weight on it when I'm watching something that's been brought over from Japan and subbed, because it's not going to cater to my westernized tastes.

Being emo is popular in Japan. All of the cool characters do it. Cloud does it, and they love him for it. Sasuke (from Naruto) does it, and he's the most popular character in the series. Katsushirou (Samurai 7) did it, and he has girls falling all over him in the anime. Being emo isn't nearly as well-received in the Americas. Their plots are structured differently as well, and so we might not find them to be spectacular.

Really, I just enjoyed the movie because it made the characters I loved from FFVII come to life as impressively-rendered figures to do a bunch of totally awesome fighting.

What happened to being clever and witty, Stinky? Or the hilarious pictures? What happened to all the amusingly hostile comments? This is just a bunch of half-assed pot-shots. It's got all the hostile, but none of the funny. Don't do that, man; I was coming to look forward to your posts. Not much else to do on these boards than admire the creative ways in which people insult one another.
