Congrats on the finished edit, Hal!
Congrats on the finished edit, Hal!
I leave for a while and my thread looks like The Golden Years. I’m not planning on changing Holdo’s hair color, though it is ridiculous.
I’m planning on using normal Blu-ray. I don’t have the equipment to work with 4K.
I will work on the timing in the Hux section and try having the music finish when we cut to Hux but I don’t follow the hand reaching out moment your talking about.
At 1:35, Kylo reaches out but the music swells a few seconds later.
I liked the music choice but the timing was off for the swelling music and the emotion of the scene. The two beats that need to be readjusted are Kylo’s hand reaching out and the end of the song happening when Hux gives the order to finish the Resistance.
The sound effect of the lightsaber hitting the ground should be a bit softer but I like that edit.
For the Canto Bight scene, my mind immediately went, “Wait, when did they get a ship!?”
I might use the space scenes from “Rose and Finn Go Where They Belong.” The shots look cool and could replace the AT-ST escape.
Based on the YouTube clips, I will not be using any of the deleted scenes footage for my edit. Most of them are superfluous or silly. The only clip that I could see being salvaged is Luke mourning Han’s death. However, that would mean going from a shot with Rey and Chewie in it to a shot of him mourning. Either that, or I would need to find a scene later on where I can cut to Luke alone in his hut.
On a side note, I never thought I’d see Rose biting Hux’s finger or Tom Hardy as a stormtrooper spanking Finn.
Great improvement, Sir Ridley. Yoda’s lower lip still appears a bit stiff.
Possible deleted scene list has been making its rounds online. It seems some are throwaways while others may be good to use. Let’s hope for no overlaid timecodes this time.
- Alternate Opening
- Paige’s Gun Jams
- Luke Has a Moment
- Poe: Not Much of a Sewer
- It’s Kind of Weird That You Recorded That
- The Caretaker Sizes Up Rey
- Caretaker Village Sequence
- The Costumes and Creatures of Canto Bight
- Extended Fathier Chase
- Mega Destroyer Incursion – Extended Version
- Rose Bites the Hand That Taunts Her
- Phasma Squealed Like a Whoop Hog
- Rose & Finn Go To Where They Belong
- Rey & Chewie in the Falcon
There was MORE CANTO BIGHT!? Oh dear.
Based on the scene titles, “Mega Destroyer Incursion” is probably Tom Hardy’s cut elevator cameo. “Caretaker Village Sequence” may be the cut Luke lesson #3 from the Star Wars Show preview. For edit potential, I’m curious about the “Alternate Opening,” “Luke has a Moment,” and “Rey & Chewie in the Falcon.”
Hey, railerswim! Thanks for the thorough explanation. I wondered if it was too soon to worry about 4K blu-ray. Editing normal blu-rays can be a challenge.
Looks good, Sir Ridley! I look forward to seeing different results. I was a little hesistant to change Yoda since he doesn’t look as bad in the trailer as I remember in theaters. But, this will still make a good learning experience in photoshop.
What are the differences between normal blu-ray file sizes and 4K blu-ray? Are 4K blu-rays ripped and edited the same way normal blu-rays are? Do they require different software or a much more powerful editing rig?
Holy crap, that HISHE was cathartic. If even half of those things happened in the movie, I would have given it an 11/10.
@EvenSteven Three Things:
1-- What were you going to name the movie?
2-- Would you be willing to consider opening the movie as Rey makes her way to Ahch-To.
3-- Would you be willing to add ~2 sentences of dialogue to Snoke that gives him some backstory?
Star Wars: Firestorm is the working title. The poster will have the text “The Last Jedi Fan Edit” at the bottom. The title crawl will say Episode VIII FIRESTORM.
DigMod already has his edit with Rey going to Ahch-To. In my edit, the opening to the movie is staying the same with the First Order Fleet attacking the Resistance Base. The only major change in the beginning footage is the removal of the Hux/Poe prank call and the BB-8 whack-a-mole scene.
I am not adding any new lines or footage unless the deleted scenes are amazing AND they don’t have timecodes. I am considering using music tracks from Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Battlefront for certain scenes. The biggest changes to this particular edit are the opening crawl, a quick Canto Bight, color-corrected Yoda, and a new ending shot with Luke.
The Last Jedi already feels bloated and my main concern with the Firestorm edit is to mainly stick to the story and action scenes. I can’t really plug in all the plot holes and dangling threads left by this movie. That job should be handled by a different edit and a far more experienced editor.
Wow. Thanks for the advice! I might test the force ghost effect on a different movie and see how that turns out. Preferably a movie scene with darker lighting.

If you don’t feel like learning After Effects someone else (like me perhaps) will do that scene eventually. But you could try anyway, I think I have an idea of how to do it so I can give some tips if you’d like.
Tips would be highly appreciated! I want to learn After Effects.
It would be funny if I finished Firestorm and the credits went:

All the Difficult Stuff by Sir Ridley
I was thinking about color-correcting Yoda’s force ghost. Comparing a screenshot of him in TLJ to the end of ROTJ shows that the new movie went with a dark blue filter and no transparency. This makes him look a bit chubbier than he should.
I’ve never used After Effects before so I don’t know if I will have to go frame by frame or if there’s template settings that could be applied for each camera shot. I’m also considering leaving the moments with Yoda and the burning tree alone because the silhouette of the fire against Yoda looks cool. Maybe I’ll do the whole scene for the sake of consistency.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that TLJ might end up with more fan edits than TPM.
That’s a ridiculous estimate considering TPM has 30 listings on fanedit’s IFDB right now. But time will tell.
A question for editors in this thread: How many edits of The Last Jedi do you think there will be in the first year after it’s out on video?
My guess, there will be 2 or 3 “Canto Bight-less” cuts within the first week, 3 or 4 polished edits in the first month, and then about a dozen total in the first year. I know The Force Awakens has 4 edits in two years but I’m curious how much The Last Jedi will influence the fanedit community.

[Handman] You can cut pretty much all but one scene from Canto Bight, where DJ’s character is first introduced.Or you just have them leave for Canto Bight, and we see them next on the way back already with the codebreaker when Poe calls. No need to see anything of Canto Bight.
Is that what you guys are planning to do? Cut Canto Bight but keep the codebreaker? Are you going to have the scene where DJ is telling Finn about arms dealers or will you cut right to Snoke’s Star Destroyer?
I was thinking about keeping the initial visit to Canto Bight where they look around a bit, they see the real codebreaker, and then get arrested. No preaching about animal cruelty and bad rich people. I’m debating whether or not to cut the scene after DJ picks the lock and then they go right to the escape ship.

How about cutting Finn and Rose (almost) entirely from the movie? Move Finn waking up shortly after Holdo assumes command. Finn’s “where’s Rey?” cuts to Rey arriving on the Supremacy. Canto Bight and the Hyperspace tracker, all gone. Besides just cutting a poor subplot, it also simplifies the story considerably by letting us focus in on the arcs of Rey, Kylo, and Poe.
I know it sounds great to cut out that entire B-plot, but there’s a few problems with it. Like Handman mentioned, DJ needs to betray the Resistance to the First Order. Second, there’s Leia’s tracker that Finn picks up so Rey can fly to Snoke’s Star Destroyer. Third, Finn and Rose have to fly back to Crait in the used First Order ship. So, having them just appear in the final battle without the Canto Bight plot would be jarring from a viewer’s perspective.
Admittedly, it would be interesting to see Finn kamikaze the Death Star laser without any previous footage of him besides waking up. And then out of nowhere, a random girl from two hours ago bumps into him.
I’m still concerned about this movie after reading about all the production issues. The visuals in the trailer look cool. I’m not buying Alden as Solo but I can set my doubts aside when I watch the movie. I also hope that the trailer music isn’t the same style as the final film.
I wonder if there will be a subplot about Lando shaving his beard.
The footage looked promising. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the music. Now, to wait for the full trailer.

Funny you say that sounds like fan fiction, as that basic idea was actually in an early draft of ROTJ.
I was reading that draft a couple days ago on Reddit. It still seems like a neat idea but I can understand why Abrams wouldn’t use it (prequel reminder, getting Neeson back, etc.)
