So I just watched through the edit, and it makes the movie so much better! the only thing I don’t understand is why did you cut off the Naboo plains scene?

I personally just thought the scene where Anakin rides the grass tick/cow thing and the two of them rolling around in the grass was pretty silly and seemed like something out of a rom-com, and I wanted their romance to progress much more slowly and naturally in this edit.

Just created a mockup for a Clone Wars “ending montage” for a potential V.2. It’s very rough and has no sound effect or score, and is more of a proof of concept. It uses clips from the Dark Times and several other cinematics. When V.2 comes around I hope to make my own cinematics to match the aesthetic of the first clip from Dark Times. The purpose is to really cement home the idea that the Galaxy is now engaged in a full-scale war, and to adopt George Lucas’s early ROTS ideas of wanting a montage of the Clone Wars, albeit in a different way.

I like the idea a lot of showing some of the Clone Wars in the movie. AOTC has always had a “blue balls” feeling in the ending for how it spends the whole movie building up the war and then ends right when it starts. That said, it feels a little weird just plopping in a 3 minute battle scene like that. I’d experiment with cutting back-and-forth between the movie footage of the clones with some quick cuts to the battle scenes.

Yeah I get that it does feel a little weird, and yeah I’ll definitely try the cutting back and forth. And I agree about the blue balls feeling, TPM really should’ve been the start of the Clone Wars, and AOTC should have really focused on the war itself and Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship. Nothing I can do to change that though that would be an insane edit.

Yes, Naboo, Coruscant, Bespin and Jakku are in the end sequence.

Not exactly in regards to Ascendant, but I think it would be cool if there was a montage where we saw different planets hear Poe and Finn’s rallying call. Like maybe we could see the Falcon flying in hyperspace, hear Finn and Poe’s speech but with some radio/recorded distortion, and then cutting to establishing shots of different planets or something. Though I think it is difficult to try and reuse shots from other films/shows without it feeling too fanedit-y.

At the very least, I think it would be cool if when we saw the Falcon take off and fly away from the base, we also heard a bit of their speech with some audio recording distortion that fades off as the Falcon flies away, making it clear that it was POE (and Finn) and their rallying call that brought the galaxy together, not just “Lando”.

That would be really awesome and interesting idea! The shots of the Resistance preparing their vehicles could be replaced with the planet shots, but it would take work to make them look different than previous material. Maybe have someone render them in Unreal Engine or something like that and do wide shots instead of close ups? Some animations can look almost 100% realistic if done well and with the camera at a distance.

I like the concept, and I think this could really work within the context of your edit!

Thank you! I really appreciate any positive comments or criticisms, or people taking the time to follow this edit. I’d have to find a good music track to fit in, hopefully something from Battlefront II would fit in well.

I’ve started watching your edit and like it so far. Moving the Star Destroyer planet destruction scene to the beginning helped establish the stakes early on. The only tradeoff is the main heroes don’t form an attachment to it, but by making it Corellia that’s destroyed you’ve definitely upped the stakes for Legends fans, which I assume is your main goal with this edit.

Great, it makes a lot more sense if you have seen my Episode 8 beforehand as well, as I introduce Palpatine’s return there. So it doesn’t seem as random and sudden of an appearance in 9.

And yes, I tried to introduce some sensible Legends easter eggs here and there. Did you get the sense that the whole planet of Corellia was destroyed there or that it was just an orbital bombardment that destroyed a city/continent? (was going for more of a Jedha in Rogue One partial destruction feel instead of an all out Alderdaan destruction)

Definitely the Jedha in Rogue One vibe.

It doesn’t really sound like there’s a lot there to do. And the theatrical has artificially large stakes by having a huge fleet of essentially Death Stars. If lowering the stakes means removing those I’m okay with that. But after the huge things happening in 7 and 8, and especially how the latter feels like a halfway decent ending in its own right, I’m okay with a more character focused epilogue. (Not that that’s what we got.)

I definitely agree that it’s not what we got. It really seems like the initial intention was to go for scale over character, as evidenced by the sheer amount of planets and locations in the film, but things like the final battle fall flat and it feels like it was because of things getting cut. For example, when you look at behind the scenes footage and TV spots they initially had more filmed for the cavalry charge on the Star Destroyer, a sequence that felt half-hearted and choppy in the final version. You can tell things were heavily cut here, for example, as soon as the Sith landing craft touch down it cuts straight into a heated battle, even as the ramps have barely opened and the Sith troopers haven’t even come out and dispersed. Also, we see Finn and Jannah riding an orbak and the next time we see them they’re on foot with no sequence of events showing as to how this happened, which was probably shown before heavy cuts were made.

Also, would it be possible to PM me a new link to your edits? The old link from a few months ago doesn’t seem to be working at the moment. Thank you!

This sounds super interesting, do you mind sending a link? Also, one thing I’ve noticed about TRoS is its small scale, smaller than even TFA and TLJ. The only moment that feels of appropriate scale for the finale of the saga is the Galaxy Fleet arriving, but that only lasts for about a minute. The Battle of Exegol feels extremely rushed compared to the Battles of Endor or Scarif which were much more fleshed out. This movie feels the least like a war than all the other Star Wars movies, it mostly feels like a treasure hunt spinoff save for the actions on Exegol. These are problems are pretty ingrained in the film’s story and structure, but I was wondering if you had any ideas how to remedy the scale issue?

I know this comment is super late considering you’re almost done with V.2, but I was wondering what your overall ideas and opinions are on TRoS’s scale? In my opinion, aside from the Galaxy Fleet sequence, (which is given about a minute’s worth of attention) the movie’s scale seems very small, smaller than TFA’s and TLJ’s, and inappropriately small for a finale to the saga. It seems more like a scavenger hunt than a war against the First Order, which largely feels like an afterthought. Out of all the Star Wars movies, this one felt the least like the “wars” part.

I know these are problems pretty ingrained into the structure of the film, but some ideas like expanding the Kijimi uprising were interesting. Have you ever though about contacting a good VFX artist like Starforge to expand the Exegol Battle/Galaxy Fleet sequence to make it more of a fitting finale? Maybe for a distant future V3, I know at the moment you’ve already put an amazing amount of work into improving this film.

My Return of the Jedi Edit (WIP, Rough Workprint Released)
Time

I’ve assembled a rough workprint of this edit! There’s a real emphasis on rough, as there still needs to be lots of audio work done, and I’m waiting for other fanfilms to be released so I can add in more footage to sections like the ground battle of Endor and the space battle. The fan film footage also needs to be colored corrected, have grain added, and and new audio put over so it blends with the original footage of ROTJ. PM me for a link if we want to see this rough workprint.

V.1 of the movie is now completed and released! PM me for a link. I would love any feedback on the edit as well for a possible V.2 of the movie down the road. This is really me dipping my toe into the waters of fan editing, and I have much more ambitious projects planned to be completed in the future as my skills evolve and more high quality fan films come out that can be used as a source for footage.

The Phantom Menace: Altered and Extended Edition (Completed and Released)
Time

Out of all the prequels I found this the hardest to make better, simply because unless I completely re-dubbed both Jar Jar and Anakin, they have key lines at certain point that need to stay in, but their characters are nonetheless still cringey. I really just had to eliminate the worst of the worst when it came to those too, without cutting down the movie too much and drastically shortening the runtime. Overall this is a relatively conservative edit of the Phantom Menace, with deleted scenes being added in to beef up the runtime and account for the time lost because of cut footage. Below are the bulk of changes made:

  • Cut some of the battle droid lines such as “uh oh” or “Uh…”
  • Tone down Jar Jar whenever possible, but not in a way that interrupts the flow of the film.
  • Remove as much of young Anakin’s bad dialogue or “kiddy” comments when possible, with the goal to make him more mature.
  • Get rid of Boss Nass’s weird mouth-shaking.
  • Possibly put in some footage of Darth Maul training from the Darth Maul fan film.
  • Get rid of the other Tatooine children talking about Anakin’s pod racer.
  • Expand the pod race sequence.
  • Put deleted scenes back in, trimming some of them.
  • Maybe get rid of any reference of midi-chlorians, would only keep them because “M-count” is mentioned in the Mandalorian.
  • Remove Padme’s line “without the viceroy they will be lost and confused.” This line makes little sense, she should want to capture the viceroy so he’s held accountable for his crimes, the droid control ship is what actually controls the droids.
  • Try to make Anakin piloting the Naboo starfighter as believable as possible, removing any lines like “oops” or any of his screams, in order to make it look like he actually knows what he’s doing and doesn’t just destroy the droid control ship by dumb luck.
  • Slightly restructure the final battle.
  • Get rid of any Jar Jar antics during the final battle.
