The Shifting Tone of Star Wars

Yeah, Lucas' original drafts refer to the good Ashla and evil Bogan parts of the Force, but they like so many other elements that more specifically defined it, were gradually dropped in succeeding version. Eventually it became the more  mysterious element of the galaxy that a variety of audiences found so interesting because it was ambiguous that you could read anything into it.

In that regard its worth noting that ANH has Kenobi referring to Vader being seduced by just dark side, while the latter two films emphasize much more strongly that it was the Emperor himself who strongly lured him over, likely with his mastery of the dark side. Palpatine himself basically tells Darth that only their combined power can bring him over, and Yoda's last warning is that he cannot underestimate the Emperor's abilities.

Clearly there was a shift that as bad as the dark side was, it was much more dangerous in the hands of experienced man like Palpatine. If there was cosmic element to the Force it seemed fairly malleable enough to whims of others, which fittingly enough could suggest an interesting backstory for the Emperor:

He wanted power, discovered he had the Force within him, learned of the abilities of the dark side, and then used it in subtle ways at the political level until he managed to get Anakin on his side, and proceeded to take out the biggest potential threat there was with the Jedi. Speaking for myself, Palpatine simply being an opportunist who found an effective means to get what he wanted is far more interesting than the quasi-fundamentalist Sith the prequels portrayed him as.

i finally read the Heir to the Empire trilogy recently and not to majorly spoil anything but it is speculated in the book that the Emperor rose to power much in the same way Jorus C'baoth does (a partnership with the military at first, and that military believing they can keep him in check and under their control)

i wish Zahn had more freedom to delve a bit deeper into the Old Republic's history, Clone Wars, formation of the Empire, Emperor's rise to power. anything he had in mind would have probably been a million times better.

This is why I wish Zahn had been chosen to write most of the PT.

Hausu AKA House (1977)

This is the weirdest fucking movie I've ever seen, full stop! It's like Lynch and Tarantino decided to have a baby, who then went on to edit The Evil Dead and Pink Floyd: The Wall into a movie based on his most intense nightmare while on a severe acid trip! If there's any movie anywhere more bizarre than this movie, I do not want to see it; anything that can outdo this film in sheer batshit craziness would surely drive me completely and irreversibly insane!

James Whale approved this message*

*He cannot approve this message, as "approve", being a present tense verb, cannot be used in conjunction with the past tense actions of Señor Ballena, who has been dead since 1957, which is a year clearly situated in a timeframe predating our own.

There were Special Edition adaptations put out by Dark Horse.

They did do reprints of the Marvels, but with new duller coloring than the originals.

Weird. That looks like the books I have, but it doesn't sound like the books I have.

I already mentioned the reprint info on the inside flap, and the credits are completely different (unless Episode IV just happened to have completely different credits from the other two).

"Script: Archie Goodwin
Pencils & Inks: Al Williamson, Carlos Garzon
Colors: Gary Porter, Perry McNamee
Lettering: Ed King
Cover Art: Greg & Tim Hildebrandt"

Neat, I didn't know pressing shift+return bypassed the extra
.

Also, I'm skimming through real quick, and I don't see any SE changes in Jedi. Even the Sarlacc looks like it's supposed to, no beak or anything.

LOL.  I love how the description says the 97 Jabba scene is amazing...when it's one of the worst CGI scenes I've ever seen in my entire life!

For anyone interested who doesn't feel like clicking on the link, here's the relevant passage from the synopsis.

When George Lucas made the first Star Wars motion picture, a scene was shot wherein Han Solo met Jabba the Hutt. But as any Star Wars fan knows, Jabba didn't appear until the third film, Return of the Jedi. Lucas had hit the technological wall -- he couldn't craft Jabba the way he wanted, so he simply removed the scene from his initial, ground-breaking movie. Now, two decades later, he has taken that footage -- with a young Harrison Ford portraying a brash Han Solo -- and added Jabba to it. The result is incredible. The hair will stand up on the back of your neck, and you'll feel twenty years younger as you experience that remarkable thrill all over again.

LOL. It'd be sad if it wasn't so damn funny.

I'm not even completely sure if Engineers = Space Jockey.  The Space Jockey looked like it was 20 feet tall and the Engineer looked half that, at most.
I've read some fan theories out there which run with that idea. One is that the Engineers are emissaries of the Space Jockeys or something like that, and that their Space Jockeyesque suits are some form of bioengineered outfit that allows them to interface with Jockey technology.

But the size difference remains. The chair is also smaller than the one in Alien.

You can come up with whatever Fansplanations you want... the fact is- it just doesn't match and it doesn't matter to the people who made it as much as the people who watch it want it to.

You're missing the point of the theory. The theory posits that the Space Jockey in Alien would be a real Space Jockey, ie. what you see is what you get - that is the creature itself, not an external suit - while the Engineers in Prometheus are the "men in suits", the emissaries, servants, slaves, etc. of the true Space Jockies. They, being two different species, wouldn't be the same size for that very reason - they are not one and the same.

FWIW, I didn't come up with this theory and I don't really subscribe to it; I, frankly, like to take Alien on its own, and pretend none of the sequels or spinoffs - including Prometheus - ever happened. I'm just mentioning the theory for the sake of anyone interested in the possibility.

Do you think the average citizen of the Star Wars galaxy would even be aware of the Force?

Are they stranded for months before arriving at Bespin?  I don't think so.  It really seems like no more than a few days.

I feel Luke's comment on having "learned so much since then" in regards to his failure in the cave indicates more than a few days pass from the moment he experience's his vision to the time he leaves Dagobah. If that's so, then there's no reason to believe any differently in regards to the Falcon's trip to Bespin.

Ikrit. He played the role of Anakin Solo's mentor and his pet. It is like every small Star Wars fans dream to get a cute bunny-kitten-puppy-squirrel hybrid thingy that also happens to be a wise old Jedi Master dedicated to helping you learn the ways of the Force.

He's like a version of Yoda that has never picked up a lightsaber and he is clearly more badass than Mace Windu.

<img src="http://i.crackedcdn.com/phpimages/article/9/3/5/2935.jpg?v=1" width="257" height="407" />

And then he gets killed liked a bitch by the Yuuzhan Vong.

God, what a piece of shit the New Jedi Order series turned out to be. It along with the rapid prequelization following AOTC is the straw that broke the EU camel's back.

I never imagined the Space Jockeys to be anything other than what they were shown to be in Alien. I'll bet, back in the day, that Scott didn't either.

I'm guessing Scott didn't give it too much thought at the time. But so what? is that supposed to be a strike against either film?

Not necessarily - I haven't seen Prometheus, so I can't say anything for certain about it - but making the Space Jockeys some generic Star Trek race doesn't seem very inspired to me.
