Happy New Year!
Time

2014's still nineteen minutes away for me, but since I'm here, I may as well reminisce.

Ah, 2013 ... the year I watched and became a fan of Twin Peaks; became a fan of David Lynch in general; watched and became a fan of Sliders; became a fan of Heather Langenkamp; watched most of the episodes from the first three live-action Star Trek series'; read the first two novels in the Dune series; got sick three times in three different months (January, September, and October); watched way too many movies; and got rid of most of my R. L. Stine books.

Overall, it wasn't the worst year I've ever experienced (but it certainly wasn't the best, either).

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) - 6.5/10

You can't take anyone seriously who gives the same rating of 8/10 to Wizard of Oz, WarGames...and Wes Craven's New Nightmare!

Mr. Sardonicus (1961) - 7/10

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) - 6/10

Give Star Wars a break for 6 months or more...watch with a critical eye

Simple solution.

Watch it lo-fi(VHS,Beta,V2000, laserdisc)!

It forces you to focus on the characters and the storytelling and nothing-else.

Effects and sets are obscured by the relatively low quality picture that you have no choice but  to follow the story.

Maybe Star Wars fans have been too obsessed with Pixels and picture quality in the last 17 years(at least since the advent of DVD-1997) that it forbids them from just enjoying the film itself.

I know that the counter aurgument is that the picture quality is so bad(for NTSC VHS in particular) that it is too much of a distraction to enjoy the flick.

Or is that because we are so used to being spoiled in the high -definition era?

I am fortunate enough to  own a 4K Sony 1000 projector.

I can watch the likes of Oblivion,Elisium,Looper,Pacific Rim,Man Of Steel and Star Trek Into Darkness on this projector  upscaled to 4K, enjoying every last ounce of pixel information/detail that these flicks have to offer.

They may look fantastic but IMHO all the above are just average movies---great style....but little substance---I re-iterate---in my opinion!

So yeah.....I get more of a kick watching my beat up ol' 1982 1st release(library rental) VHS video tape of Star Wars than watching  any of the above movies in 4K.

I actually own the OOT -- and the SE, for that matter -- on VHS. Less-than-high definition doesn't really bother me -- though I don't really prefer it -- the fact that the tapes will eventually degrade to nothing does, though.

no children (and never will, even if I do find a wife one day, though a part of me wants to).

Feel free to ignore this personal question, but are you incapable or is it a lack of desire?  If the latter...desires change over time.  They certainly did for me and my wife.

If I'm infertile, I wouldn't know it. Anyway, I just don't want to bring children into a world as screwed up as this one is.

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place
Time

Forcing myself to watch so many bad entries in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series over the past week has put me in a rather somber mood. It's no fun watching something that starts out so good turn to complete shit.

Ah, well, now that I've rewatched them, I'll never need to rewatch them again, and I can start trying to forget that parts 4, 5, 6, and Freddy vs. Jason even exist.

The merits and shortcomings of religion, spirituality, and nonbelief
Time

I don't currently subscribe to theologically conservative, inerrant Christianity because I find -- from what is admittedly only a theologically-uneducated layman's POV -- vast chunks of the Bible to be either internally inconsistent or historically inaccurate. I do think there could be validity to theologically liberal, non-inerrant forms of Christianity, though.

I also don't subscribe to atheism. I find it presumptuous to reach such a conclusion when mankind hasn't even reached full understanding of the physical universe, let alone what might be beyond it. Also, on a more emotional note, I'm not comfortable with the nihilism I believe is inherent in an atheistic universe.

As for other religions/metaphysical worldviews, I don't know enough to reach a conclusion on them. All I can say is that, from a superficial reading of them, some are more appealling to me than others.

I'm not really comfortable with my agnosticism -- I want to believe in God -- but in lieu of objective or subjective evidence for such an entity, I find cautious indecision to be the best course of action at this time.
