Each succeeding season has enthralled me less than the one preceding it, and I can’t say precisely why. I’ve liked the cast and characters* and direction in all three seasons, so the fault doesn’t lie there. Perhaps the pacing/tone just wear thin after a time. Whatever the answer, this season was good, not great, and has left me with no desire to revisit the series.

Also, as a final note, I’ve lost pretty much all interest in ever reading the books. Word of mouth is the series is very faithful to the source material. What’s the point, then, of reading them if they tell essentially the same exact story? Life’s too short to delve into redundancy.

*Except for Lemony Snicket. He’s ceaselessly dour and condescending and I don’t like him very much.

General Star Wars Questions

A question about the Jedi’s vast abilities.

Jedi can read minds, levitate stuff, Force people and things, jump super high, see glimpses of the future, and slice through anything with their lightsaber.

In a one-on-one fight, how is anybody even a match for them, who is not a Sith?
They can deflect laser blasts, cut through regular melee weapons like nothing, and if they want, just push people out the way with their minds.

It worked out great in the OT, Luke was just beginning to learn the ways of the Force, so there was plenty of challenges for him to face.

But in Obi-Wan’s time, or even Qui-Gon Jinn’s, how was there any real challenge for a Jedi, outside of fellow Force users, like Sith Lords? Their were numerous Jedi back then and they were all well trained and adept witht he Force, and not late bloomers like Luke.

It just seems like with all their abilities, any fights they had would be pretty boring. I mean, apparently the Sith had been extinct for a long time until Darth Maul showed up.

Stuff like this is why I’ve come to lament the introduction of telekinesis and other physical powers to the Force.

For me, yeah and no.
Yeah, because, damn, they’re like Dr. Manhattan. Where’s the challenge?
And no, because the telekinesis is what made them more than just space knights. Yoda being able to lift Luke’s star ship-great moment.

Maybe if they didn’t make using the Force for telekinesis so easy later on.
Luke needs to concentrate a lot to get his lightsaber out of the snow. Yoda needed to close his eyes and focus intently to lift the x-wing out of the swamp.

But later on, it’s like they don’t even need to focus hard to use it. They Force-push droids out the way, Force pull their lightsaber out their holster because their to lazy to use their arm, Force-floating fruit to impress girls.
Even in Empire Strikes Back, Luke did some kind of super speed jump that still looks weird. ROTJ, Vader can read Luke’s mind.
It’s like, Holy Crap, what can they not do. I mean, you can’t even keep secrets from them. They’ll just read your mind?

I think a good middle ground would’ve been to make telekinesis a rare ability only some extremely Force-attuned individuals can harness. If, for example, Anakin had been one of the only Jedi shown with that ability in the PT, it would’ve gone a long way towards making him as special as Lucas intended.

Interesting. So you plan for it to play out more like Belated Media’s “What if” prequel videos (at least with regard for the PT)?

Those videos were an inspiration, for sure. I also liked the ideas presented in this video.

Do you have any ideas on how to do the OT (I haven’t really seen anyone try to revise or reimagine, so I’m curious to see how you will go)?

The biggest changes I have in mind are in regard to the Death Stars and Luke & Leia. I’ll explain them in greater depth in coming posts.

The Ultimate Star Wars Saga

EPISODE I

Naboo is now Alderaan. At this point in time, Alderaan is the ruling planet of an independent system which has petitioned for Republic membership but is not yet part of that body.

The Trade Federation is now the Federation Neimoidia. Instead of being a shipping/trading conglomerate (or whatever), the Federation’s a compact empire of mercenaries which hires its services out to planets/systems embroiled in small-scale conflicts.

Qui-Gon remains Obi-Wan’s master.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan wear black uniforms, the standard garb of Jedi.

Qui-Gon is the Jedi watchman of the Alderaan system. As such, he and Obi-Wan are already present on the planet’s surface when the Federation invades.

Amidala and Padmé are now separate characters. Amidala is a child queen, 9 years old, innocent and demure. Padmé is one of her bodyguards, 17 years old, stern, with a lean muscular build.

Threepio is one of Amidala’s servitors.

Palpatine never appears in his Darth Sidious persona. It is Darth Maul alone who conspires with the Neimoidians. He is a human with red-&-black body tattoos, pristine white teeth, and a crown of feathers sewn with razor wire about his head. He wears white robes, the standard garb of Sith.

The B1 battle droids are replaced with BX commando droids. These droids rarely speak.

Qui-Gon, a nonconformist who straddles the line between orthodoxy/unorthdoxy, is the only Jedi who wields a green lightsaber. Obi-Wan, more by-the-book than his master, wields a standard blue Jedi lightsaber.

Gungans are present in the story, but Jar Jar is jettisoned.

Obi-Wan accompanies Qui-Gon and Padmé into Mos Espa.

Anakin is 12 years old.

Cliegg Lars assumes Watto’s role. Owen is Anakin’s only friend. It is implied Cliegg is Anakin’s father (and Owen his half-brother).

Obi-Wan’s explanation of the Force in SW '77 is transferred here and given to Qui-Gon.

No podrace. Qui-Gon successfully barters for Anakin’s freedom but hasn’t enough to buy Shmi’s.

Rather than a double-bladed lightsaber, Darth Maul wields a lightsaber pike. The shaft is of lightsaber-resistant metal, sporting a single red blade.

The Neimoidians erect planetary shield generators across the face of Alderaan. These generators, kilometres across in size, ravage the natural landscape and claim thousands-to-millions of lives.

There is no Chosen One prophecy. Anakin’s raw prowess with the Force is impetus enough for Qui-Gon to bring him before the Jedi Council.

The dissonance between Qui-Gon and the Council is greater here, with visible animosity between Qui-Gon and Mace Windu.

The Republic has a navy, modest but sizable enough to displace the Neimoidian presence on Alderaan. Being a non-member system, however, bureaucratic red tape prevents the Senate from assisting Alderaan. This is what inspires the non-confidence vote which ousts Valorum from the chancellorship.

Anakin remains behind at the Jedi Temple as Qui-Gon and the others return to Alderaan.

Allying with the Gungans, the Jedi & co. go to capture and disable the main shield generator. This is where Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face Maul. Maul fatally wounds Qui-Gon and bests Obi-Wan. Rather than slay Obi-Wan, Maul considers the apprentice too unworthy to die by his hand and so makes his departure.

The planetary shield nullified, the Republic fleet arrives to beat off the Federation.

The ending mostly plays out the same as in Lucas’ film.

The Ultimate Star Wars Saga
Time

Lately I’ve been wondering “What if?” What if George Lucas’ Star Wars Saga had been mapped out in advanced instead of made up as it went along? What if the Saga had been released in chronological order? What if notable characters hadn’t disappeared between films? What if good ideas had been better executed/expanded upon? What if bad retcons hadn’t been an issue?

What follows are ideas I’ve come up with for a streamlined six-episode Star Wars Saga. I won’t be touching upon the ST, since to me it exists apart from Lucas’ brainchild. I may expand these ideas into cohesive story treatments, which I will post in this thread when/if I do so.

The Star Wars franchise has been inconsistent in their portrayal of Dark Side corruption.

In the OT the only instances of Dark Side corruption are Vader and the Emperor, with both having very pale skin, and in the Emperor’s case in particular, yellow eyes. Later we meet Darth Maul, who has the yellow eyes characteristic of the Dark Side, but retained his youthful appearance throughout the twenty years leading up to the Battle of Yavin. Count Dooku shows no signs of Dark Side corruption implying his fall to the dark side has been relatively recent or he doesn’t draw from the Dark Side as much as others do. ROTS really screws up the whole notion of Dark Side corruption by revealing the reason Palpatine looks the way he does in the OT is because of Mace Windu deflecting the Force lightning back at him (I always assumed it was because of his many years immersed in the Dark Side), and finally we have Anakin Skywalker whose eyes only turn yellow when he’s really angry or something. Finally we have Snoke and Kylo Ren, with Snoke looking very old and decrepit but doesn’t have yellow eyes even though he’s established to be a longtime practitioner of the Dark Side, and Kylo Ren who been a Dark Side practitioner for at least ten years yet doesn’t show the slightest hint of Dark Side corruption.

This franchise seriously can’t make up its mind regarding the whole dark side corruption subject.

FWIW, my headcanon is that Palpatine has been alive as long as Yoda using the Force. In fact, I guess Yoda’s probably alive that way too, albeit for more selfless reasons.

Funny. That was my headcanon, too. I imagined he utilized a combination of unnatural de-aging techniques and body swapping to get the job done.
