Yeah, by the time Lucas sold his company to Disney, the EU had been a haphazard collection of bad continuity, atrocious retconning, bad character development, and shoddy storytelling for years. Frankly, it deserved to be tossed out.
Of course, I’m nowhere near convinced that what they’ve replaced it with is any better. And their leaving the PT as canon is an utter farce.
Not according to the prequels. They make an explicit distinction between Padawans and Knights, even though both are affiliated with the Jedi Order.

This discussion is reminding me of something I read somewhere about a Star Trek writer who wrote a mention of underwear into one of his novels, only to have it vetoed by some official at Paramount because the canonicity of underwear in the ST Universe hadn’t been confirmed yet.
However I did a google image search for Yoda’s lightsaber in ep. II & III and it looks just like the lightsaber in this painting. I also looked at pictures of Yoda from TPM, the original version, and I couldn’t see him carrying a lightsaber. So I guess this could have been made based on some early AOTC artwork, but until I find a specific date I’ll still be somewhat confused by this one.
IIRC, the TPM Visual Dictionary provided an image of Yoda’s lightsaber hilt.
Isn’t “Jedi Knight” supposed to be like “Knights Templar” – ie. part of their order’s name?
Could I be wrong in thinking that the character and actor took a lot of undeserved flack from fans due to the writing?
Nope. Marina Sirtis suffered the same problem. She was lousy as Troi throughout 95% of TNG’s run, but once the writers put her in an actual uniform and had her do something other than sitting on the bridge stating the obvious, she improved by leaps and bounds.
