Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?

However, what DID hit me tonight is just how out of the blue a major plot thread of the film is: Luke believing there’s still good in Vader. There’s absolutely zero reason for the viewer to think that, let alone Luke after the hell Vader causesd in ESB, but then when talking with Obi-Wan on Dagobah, Luke suddenly says he thinks Vader still has good in him and can be saved. Where the heck did that come from?!

This is why I can no longer buy into the Vader redemption arc. Two whole movies we’ve spent with the man beforehand, and the only time he ever exhibited anything resembling a redeeming trait was when he kept Fett from shooting Chewie, and that was probably done for ulterior reasons.

Show, don’t tell. A technique ROTJ failed badly to utilize.

What's the Weather Like Where You Live?
Time

Gotten chilly around here, especially after sundown.

I hate how fast summer seems to transition into fall around here. One day the temperatures are in the mid-to-high 20s and sunset is after 9:00, then weeks later, the temperature rarely rises above 15° and it’s pitch black outside by 7:00.

I should move to Vancouver Island.

RocketMan (1997) – ★★1/2 (of ☆☆☆☆)

I feel kind of bad giving this film under three stars (as Ebert did), but I can’t help but also be bothered by giving it all three stars. It’s a movie I watched on VHS a lot growing up (and that’s how I just watched it again, because there’s no BD or even a widescreen DVD to look forward to getting), and I’ve always enjoyed its dumb, goofy, childish antics. I’m convinced that my current enjoyment of it is mostly nostalgia goggles, especially because many aspects of the film felt annoying to me now rather than humourous, but I don’t think the enjoyment I still have is a bad thing necessarily.

I would definitely change the film’s constant “throwing crap at the wall” style of making jokes (as in, the films story progression is never given a chance to breathe because every frame or second of sound is filled up with jokes of varying effectiveness and maturity), but for the most part I think this is a fine children’s film that adults can also enjoy (somewhat) with a bit of forgiveness for its more annoying moments.

I think I remember watching the beginning of this movie on TV a long, long time ago. I recall my parents changing the channel 'cause they found the humour overbearingly stupid.

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

Sometimes I wonder if I’m even a Star Wars fan anymore.

Elements from the OT which continue to resonate with me:

 • The visuals.
 • The main protagonists.
 • Luke’s story.
 • The music.

Otherwise, I feel I’ve outgrown it all and probably did years ago. A series about white hat heroes battling black hat villains in a swashbuckling setting just doesn’t hold enduring appeal to someone who constantly wishes in their heart of hearts that Ingmar Bergman had created the films instead.

Why the f*** would star wars need nudity.

Doesn’t need it, but I would’ve preferred it. Why? Maybe it’s the nudist in me. Maybe it’s the deviated prevert in me. Maybe it’s the bitter adult in me who doesn’t wholeheartedly enjoy kid-friendly fairy tales anymore.

Whatever the answer is, I’d prefer a grittier, morally grayer, more adult-oriented SW over the series we have.
