He seems to question the logic of having a desktop mode.   You agree with that?

Yeah that is what I am arguing against. You can have all the smartphone stuff you want as long as desktop mode is there and I don't have to download it every single time.

Also I think using search is a lot harder, you get dozens of results that you have to scroll through and if you mistype something you don't get any results. At least on old windows I can have all the icons on one neat screen and remember where the programs are in the start menu. I don't know about anyone else but I find that a lot easier then the dos style interface of windows 8 and if windows ever drops desktop mode as an option I am done with windows.  that is all i am saying.

So we should all spend years learning how to use DOS because getting work done isn't the purpose of a computer?

Why change a system that no one had any problems with?  Why should it become super hard to find icons and why get rid of the start menu?

Do you think that it some how makes you a better person if you use a smartphone interface on your desktop? Why not leave the smartphone stuff on the smartphone?

Hey if Microsoft wants to lose money that is fine with me. They can do what they want I just will not pay for it.  I guess I and a lot of other people will be moving to Apple or Linex once Windows 7 support stops and Microsoft will just cater to the "elites" who became better people by learning to use Windows 8 and the Kinect.

But, alas, every time MS tries to push something forward, they have to drag it back. 8.1 is getting a traditional Start Menu. I expect they'll start shipping Xbox One's without Kinects before too long.

Let me get this straight,   in windows 8 there is no start menu or file system and you have to search for everything?   Sorry that is bs and doubleofive, I completely disagree with you.

yeah having to remember the exact name of the program you want to run and enter it spelled correctly into a command bar in order to find and run the program. Isn't that just DOS,the program Windows replaced because it was too hard and clumsy for the average user to use?

It didn't strike me until just now but it is,Windows 8 is just Dos with some pretty pictures. it's thirty years behind the times.

Microsoft is planning on killing Windows XP next week, and governments around the world are giving them gobs of money to keep supporting it for them.  Seriously, why kill it.  MANY important programs are still ran on windows xp.  (Security programs at government facilities, hospitals, schools, and many more are still using xp for a variety of reasons)

Yeah i don't understand how this is good business. They are keeping Windows 8 a program no one wants and killing one people are begging them to keep. My guess is they could make a ton of money selling updates for XP.

Oh well. No one ever accused Microsoft of caring about their costumers or being good at what they do.

hmmm . . . getting rid of the version that everyone is begging them to keep and keeping the version everyone hates . . . this reminds me of something . . .

*Gasp* George Lucas and Bill Gates are the same person,it all makes sense now!

Think about it,have you ever seen them together?

Oh and don't forget about Basil Fawlty.  What is it with the British. They have a reputation for being so polite and proper and yet they seem to also produce the rudest people on earth.

One can but hope.

Yes thank you. That thing does not work and it is the one thing that is holding me back from buying an Xbox one.  If I don't want to play motion sensing games that I have to yell at all day why should I have to pay for the stupid camera?  What is more I don't have space anywhere in my house for it.

Maybe the kinect is fine if you have a giant house and you play your games in a big empty room that is sound proofed, but I have yet to see one work in the real world and it sure as heck will not work in my living room. So thanks but no thanks Microsoft.

I went with the Xbox the last two generations but forcing the kinect on us has caused me to go with Ps4 and WiiU.

Look if there are people out there that like the Kinect and can make it work i say good for them, but as for me I don't want to pay for something that I have never been able to make work and that I don't have space for in my house.

I really hope Microsoft gets rid of the Kinect because I am huge Fable fan and if they don't I will not be able to play Fable 4.

Last web series/tv show seen

Well this past week i have been watching the first season of Scarecrow and Mrs.King on DvD.  I have to admit I only picked up this show at the library because I am such a huge B5 fan and it is beyond dated. if you have trouble taking 80s family shows you will not make it through one episode of this show. Still you know what? When I am in the right mood it's an enjoyable kind of dated. It's from a much simpler time when we didn't have plot arcs and stories were resolved within an hour but I guess maybe that is what I need once in while. It's lighthearted and not the sort of thing that you should think to hard about but the two leads are good, the episodes are interesting enough to keep me watching for the hour, and it has a fun lighthearted feel.

I can't explain why I have found this show to be enjoyable because when i think about it this should be the type of show that I hate but for some reason I did enjoy it. I guess it is one of those shows that you either like or you will not get it at all and if you do get it you can't explain why.  It was a fun little trip back to the decade of my birth and I don't regret watching it so that is something.

If you are looking for some light 80s escapism then give this show a shot,it may surprise you.

While Scotland had a sizable Tibetan refugee community during the time of Planet of the Spiders not many were actors. The Abominable Snowman had the same problem a few years earlier but hardly anyone seems to mind there because it's in marvelous monochrome.

Talking of which, next time I watch Warrior's Gate I'm going to turn off the colour for that full Cocteau feel.

True, monochrome does help a lot. Also a bit of cultural sensitivity helps.

Orson Welles directing himself in the monochrome Othello is still wonderful...

...but Laurence Olivier directing himself in the colour Othello is a crime against humanity...

Wow,that is all I can bring myself to say.  I am beyond all words.

Why change something that most people could use by instinct? Try doing long hours of work on windows 8 or anything that requires precise controls.  Why was the change needed, most people don't have touchscreens on their PCs and even if they do the type of work they do on a PC is still better suited to a keyboard and mouse.  Why should I bother with windows 8 and having to download an attachment just to get a version that work something like what 99% of people are used to but not as well?

Most people can do their day to day computing in their sleep since we have been using some version of this interface since the late 1980s,and it works fine.  Sure if you put the time in you may be able to learn how to use the news system but why should you have to put the work into it when the old one was not broken and if it is just for touchscreens then why is Microsoft forcing it on us by putting it on every new PC and not just the ones with touchscreens.

It's like if Ford started putting out cars with joysticks instead of steering wheels and gas pedals. Sure the new joysticks may work if you take the time to learn to use them but why would the average person want to relearn how to drive a car when they were doing just fine with the steering wheel everyone knows how to use?

Yeah there were not a whole lot of American actors in the UK at the time.

But the few there were, got plenty of work! Many faces in Star Wars can be found cropping up in British TV to play Americans.

Mac McDonald - Is practically a one-man industry for playing Americans in British Sci-Fi TV and Film or American movie productions shot in the UK...

Red Dwarf

Fifth Element

Aliens

Batman

Yes but we are talking about the early 1960s not the 1980s here. By the 80s you saw more Americans playing americans on Doctor Who.  In the 1960s the British film industry was having some real problems that it took a while to recover from. The American film industry was in trouble too but it was bigger to begin with so ii fared better. There just were not alot of americans coming over to the Uk and I would be surprised if those that were would be cheap enough for Doctor Who. Remember that back then Doctor Who was not the flagship series it was today. it was just one low budget family show that the BBC produced with a total budget of two thousand five hundred pounds an episode and The Gunfighters was a serial that's purpose was to come in under budget so the producers would have more money to spend on other stories that season.  Even if some Americans had been I round it seems unlikely Doctor Who would be able to afford them. Besides casting locals is easier. Even today on American production with multi million dollar budgets you some times see Americans trying to sound British so I really wouldn't hold the Gunfighter against the Doctor Who production staff or the BBC in general.

It's mental.

My parents have recently got themselves a Win8 PC. Usually I sort out the bugs and setup stuff for them but I'm totally lost on the Win8 interface. I can't figure out to do the most basic things on it, that I'd take for granted on Win7.

I think Microsoft were still light-headed from actually getting Win7 to be better than XP and not a disaster like Vista and thought they could afford to get arrogant again. I'll wait for Win9 aka Windows: The Hubris Edition.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Yeah I am normally able to do all the basic stuff like setting up the computer, uninstalling stuff, running virus scans, and all that other junk on any computer but i can't find a thing on my friend's computer. You know smart phone operating systems were made for smart phones, not desk top PCs. That is why they are called smart phone operating systems and not PC operating systems microsoft.

I tell you if Microsoft was trying to make a broken operating system that I would never use even if it was given to me for free I don't think they could have done a better job then they did with windows 8.

Yeah I have a friend who has windows 8 because it came pre installed on his computer and he uses his computer for programing and debugging. Needless to say I have no wish to ever use it and he is planning on downgrading to Windows 7.

Is it just me or between Vista,My computer being gone, and Windows 8 does Microsoft get off on making our PCs hard to use.

I know it's a little thing but why on Windows 7 has My computer been moved from being an icon at the top left hand corner of the screen like in every other version of windows to just another item in the start menu?

Every time I try to get to my computer I go for the icon in the top left hand corner and open it by mistake and only then do I remember to go into the start menu.

Why change something that wasn't broken and we were all used to using?

Actor Mickey Rooney dies

Actor Mickey Rooney, the pint-sized screen dynamo of the 1930s and 1940s best known for his boy-next-door role in the Andy Hardy movies, has died at 93, the TMZ celebrity website reported.

An MGM star in the 1930s and '40s, the 93-year-old's long career started as a child actor in a series of silent short comedies.

His movies included the Andy Hardy series, Captains Courageous, Boy's Town, National Velvet, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Requiem for a Heavyweight, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Black Stallion and Bill.

Rooney won two special Academy Awards as well as four nominations.

In recent years, his roles included George Miller's Babe: Pig In The City, Night at the Museum and The Muppets.

Rooney was married eight times, the first time to screen beauty Ava Gardner. Asked once if he would marry all his eight wives again, he said, "Absolutely. I loved every one of them."

Well part of my heart just died:(

When I was a kid we didn't have a VCR and one of the few stations that would come in was PBS and at the time they played a lot of movies from the 30s-the 50s so I can honestly say I grew up watching a lot of his movies. In fact I clapped in the theater when his cameo came up in The Muppets a couple years back.

I have not felt this way since Bob Hope died.

He will be missed:(

Yeah there were not a whole lot of American actors in the UK at the time. if anything UK actors were going to Hollywood not the other way around. At any rate the whole story is so goofy I think the British actors pretending to be Americans fits right in and adds to the charm. It is one of my favorite stories for all the wrong reasons.

One things that I will say in favor of The Gunfighters is that the main cast seems to be having a good time making it and that gives the story a lighthearted feel that I enjoy.

Oh and by the way,is it fall yet?  I want to see the 12th Doctor on screen for more then thirty seconds.
