Idea & Info: a Dune Fan Edit thread...

The problem as I understand it is that David Lynch will not let go of the movie rights. As a result the SciFi channel could ONLY make a TV version.
Which is damn ironic since he won't fix his version (and I doubt he plans to remake it).

The problems of the SciFi version not with standing, they still produced a more faithful imagining of the books. It's a shame they didn't do a bit better (that goes double for Children of Dune).

I'll still watch any other books they want to adapt though...

And to further complain... (I really do like these, I'm just a born nit-picker)

Prisoner of Azkaban
Extended bird sequence is in the wrong place. It goes at the end where we actually see a piece of the end when the Whomping Williow gets the bird. Now it get's two bird at different times. What is it with double birding?

The scene that was originally suppose to follow Sirius breaking into the dorm is ok where it's been moved, but Harry comments that Sirius was close enough that he could have killed Black. This makes no sense since as yet, Harry does not know Black is responsible for his parent's death and has no reason to go after him. I wish this line were trimmed too (or the whole scene left intact in it's original place, even if there is no lead in to it).

The audio for the deleted scenes is spot on and indistinguishable from the rest of the scenes. Really nice.

Anyone ever check out the dual audio (.mkv) Xvid extended HP's floating on Emule? It's Italian/English (dubs and subs), with mp4 5.1 audio, I've never grabbed it myself but I've tripped across it a few times. Only problem is I think it's from a 25 fps source.

Chamber of Secrets comments:

I have been enjoying working my way through these edits, but HP2 had some issues I wanted to bring up.
Most important is that nearly every deleted scene has it’s volume noticably lower than the rest of the film. I found myself grabbing the remote everytime an added scene came in. I don’t know what kind of effort would have been required to fix that though, since I’ve never edited 5.1 content myself.

Also what I found most jarring was one scene out of order.
Shortly after the dueling club incident, there is a deleted scene where Harry overhears people gossiping about him being the Heir of Slytherin. ADM then edit’s to Harry finding Nearly Headless Nick and the kid (can’t remember his name) petrified.

In the ABC version after Harry hears the conversation and leaves the library, he bumps into Hagrid who is holding a dead chicken and explains about needing a charm for either a fox or a blood-sucking bugbear. This explains later why when he bursts into Dumbledore’s office (to say Harry is innocent), he is hold a dead chicken.

In ADM’s edit, the dead chicken conversation takes place much later in the film, which starts you wondering why Hagrid keeps walking around the castle with dead chickens all the time. He isn’t, it was only once…

Besides that, I still love these discs.

Well, I think they DO have extended editions in mind. Supposedly one of the actors spoke 'out of school' and said there are extended versions planned; with the deleted scenes we've seen and possibly more.

I think they are wisely waiting until they finish all films, so the extended double dips don't effect future releases. (If they released extended HP1, 2, & 3 now, who would buy the theatrical DVD of Goblet of Fire? Anyone with have a brain would wait after being burned 3 times.) It's smart of them (uncharacteristicly so), but it blows for us.

If you've seen the ABC Specials of the HPs, you can see some transitional elements between the deleted scenes not on the DVD's (or ADM's edits for that matter). Nothing serious, just stuff that smooth out the cuts. Someout door beauty shots and such. It basically suggests that they are all ready to go with extended cuts.

Most importantly, I would NOT expect a DVD release. It might be an added value they try to push into WB's first HD-DVD releases...

Which brings me to:

Re: My $.02.

Finally finished watching Ep. III today.
Another great edit. The movie is now much more watchable.
I am again reminded of The New Yorker's Anthony Lane's review of RotS: superior to its two recent predecssors, "but only in the same way that dying from natural causes is preferable to crucifixion".

I was surprised to see the insertion of the deleted scenes that didn't have finished fx.

The Good: I definitely liked how you down played the lame "high ground" bit, and the stupid dying of a broken heart scenario. Unfortunately it did make the whole birth scene a bit choppy, but a good trade off none the less and forgivable.
The Bad: I would have liked to see the lines "you're breaking my heart Anakin", and "Hold me like you did by the lake on Naboo" gone.
The Ugly: Qui Gong - Good idea, bad in execution. Audio quality and volume was variable, spatial placement was dodgy, dialog recognizability jarring, and Yoda's final conversation -- confusing (who were they refering to finishing what they start? (Besides Luke)).

Not the highest point of the ADM edits, but still better then GL's interpretation, and that's really what counts.
Thank you very much ADM!!!!

I guess the question needs to be asked:
Will there be a version 2 of the Fanfiltration edit?
In all likelihood the long overdue extended DVD will be a new transfer/re-edit since the original Alan Smithee version may only exist in Full Frame.
This means better quality source, and possibly completed special effects.
That's my assumption as to why the DVD has taken longer than they anticipated.
Also the Deleted Scenes include an alternate ending which MAY have the explanation of Paul marrying Irulian.

I'm just saying that a lot of what's missing that we are all looking for may be yet to come.
If half of what I'm guessing is true I'd love to see this project rebooted.

Dr. M's Reinventing The Wheel Edition (PAL to NTSC+) (Released)

Quick and dirty conversion: rip the audio and video, make a .d2v project out of it, plug it into something like DIKO which will automatically do a 25 to 29.97 pulldown with a resize (and leave the audio untouched).
The video re-encoded in an OPV quality mode on my PC can take 1 to 2 hours. It'd look and sound pretty darn close to Moth3r's. The runtime would still be short like PAL but it'd be fully NTSC.
Easy, and anyone could do it.

To really make myself only minorly pleased with the output would take a lot more work. Brightness and white point changes (picture seems darker than the first 2), more yellow and green (again), less red, the resize and framerate change of course. There would definitely be edge enhancement for better or worse, and the encoding time would end up being around 20+ hours because of the complicated filter chain and slow-assed-ness of VirtualDubMod (I can use AviSynth but not for projects this detailed).
When it's all said and done it'll either look like a VHS copy of a laserdisc or a crappy oversharp mess.
I don't really like any of the alternatives that's why I'm giving it a miss.

Funny thing is with programs like DIKO, DVDRebuilder, SVCD2DVD, etc. it's really amazing that there is still not a single tool that'll let you do a straight DVD -> DVD recode from PAL to NTSC or vice versa. Lot's of people seem to be wanting one.

As far as an extended edition of Ep. 4, it's a partial joke, but only kind of. I've tossed around the idea of using my DVD and cutting in all the deleted scenes that OCPMovie cleaned up to produce a sort of rough cut with all available scenes. OCP pretty much flirted around the idea with Deleted Magic, but I would go less high-brow informative and straight to the popcorn eating rainy day watching route. Don't know if it's something worth watching, but I don't think anyone has done it yet.

Ok, this may be sad news to some of you, but after spending the afternoon tinkering with RotJ I've decided not to go forward with it.

I do not mean to be criticial of Moth3r's DVD, in fact I love his work. That's why I'm doing what I do here. I just feel the final film has been softened too much to be considered a better alternative to an NTSC sourced laserdisc.
What was gained by the extra lines of resolution just don't come across in any substantial manner.

For anyone looking to finish out their set, I would recommend Citizen's RotJ (when it's done). It will be from a PAL source as well, but hopefully sharper than what I would be able to produce.

Who knows maybe I'll make a disc off of that with the PCM audio just for completeness... but that would be very redundant (and repetitious).

Thanks to everyone who has helped me with this project.

And a teaser... next might be A New Hope Extended Edition... or not.

Moth3r's RotJ was in my mail today... looks like I have a project this weekend :-)

I will NOT be touching up the colors this time from the looks of it, they are beautiful.
There will still be a slight brightness tweak I think, and I might add some sort of sharpening if it doesn't look like crap.

I suggest the last one since the first 2 movies have a nice sharp clarity and the RotJ seems a little softer. I HATE edge enhancement so odds are I'm just talking out of my lower orifice.
