Fantasia Hybrid Edition (* unfinished project *)
Time

Anywho, back on topic.

I was watching the Fantasia Legacy DVD tonight and Roy explained how when they wanted to restore the roadshow version for the DVD, Deems Taylor's voice work was unusable.

They faced the choice of having a mix of Deems' and new voice work, or completely replacing the voice over.  They felt it was better to do the latter.

Which brings me to this preservation.  I haven't checked the run times or compared the laserdisc audio with the DVD, but the laserdisc wouldn't be the roadshow version (since that was restored for the DVD).

Aren't you faced with the same issues?  That is, the laserdisc has SOME Deems, but not enough to completely replace the DVD voice overs.

I think they were trying to draw a parallel.

You have mythological creatures, but it is also the Old South.  All the cherubs look like blond baby Elvises(sp?) or something, the lady centaurs are like southern belles, etc.

Of course I could be reading too much into it.  Still, people today go out of their way to be offended by things.

Btw, I remember sitting through Fantasia in a theater when I was a kid... and it was dull then too.  It has never been, and never will be a film for kids.

There is someone on ioffer that has been selling a restored version of the scene (Google: ioffer, pastoral, fantasia).   It may be somehow related to Andrea Ippoliti's restoration (which was a hybrid of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" and the Fantasia DVD.  It is posted on YouTube. http://classiccartoons.blogspot.com/2008/07/return-of-sunflower.html

Has anyone seen the DVD version or any fan restored version?

Idea: a Star Trek 2009 Extended Cut?
Time

I finally got to see the deleted scenes today.  A few are quite awesome, including the full Kobayashi Maru scenes (though it does make Kirk more of a bastard).

A weird thought... is anyone else put off by the idea that the Kobayashi Maru is "Spock's test"?  Heck I'm not sure I buy that he's so important to the Academy.  I guess they needed some excuse to bring a higher ranking character in with those still being trained.

Anyway, this is really just an elaborate bump to see if there is any progress.

I'm confused, what are you using as a source for Deems Taylor.

From what I understand his version has never been in any home video release format.  All that exists is the 1982 Hugh Douglas and the 2000 Corey Burton mixes.

Frankly, if you do have a source for it, I'd like to integrate him back into the current DVD release.

Btw, Pastoral was on the "Magic and Music" episode of "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color", complete and uncensored.  I don't know of a source for this though.

For the life of me though, I can not figure out what is "racist" about the scene.  IIRC, they also zoomed to remove the animated nudity.

I do have a mediocre mp4 version of Patoral uncut.  I'm not sure it's as racist as people keep thinking it is, but that never stopped Disney from censoring before.

As far as stuff to add, might I recommend segments that were intended for Fantasia 3?

There is DVD footage of Destino, Little Matchgirl and One By One.  I've never seen Lorenzo anywhere at all (by I'm still looking).

Man, I really hope that is true that ADM is working on a Half-Blood Prince extended edition! His other HP extended editions are all in a box set of mine waiting to be complete! :)

Whenever we watch want to watch Harry here, we always pop in ADM's versions, because they feel more complete. I was worried that he stopped making them. So yeah, I am greatly looking forward to Half-Blood Prince extended, as well as Deathly Hallows (1 & 2) in the future!

Thanks for all the hard work adigitalman!

Oooh, maybe we'll get a Deathly Hollows extended and cut together into a single 6 hour film or something... wait am I getting too far ahead?

Idea & Info: 'Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown' and 'Race For Your Life Charlie Brown' - airing on HD channels throughout June and July... how bout a DVD preservation?
Time

Posted June 18 on thedigitalbits.com:

Anyway, here's some interesting release news: Warner Home Video has set A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving... for Blu-ray Disc release on 10/5 (SRP $24.98 each). They also have a Peanuts Holiday Collection due on Blu-ray that same day (SRP $42.93), including It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas.

You've got to figure the rest will follow.  Just something to consider before going to extremes to cap these.

Read post 766.  I'd say the answer is most definitely yes.  HPB is in the works.

As far as a comparison of HP1 & 2's official extended releases versus ADM's cut, it's mixed.  There are a few transitional elements, and some slight differences in order on the official versions.

On the down side, IIRC there are some continuity problems and sloppiness to the additions in the official cuts that ADM smoothed out.

Just to be clear, there are only official extended cuts of the first two films.  ADM's edits are still indispensable.

Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit)
Time

You all may want to check out BionicBob's edit, "The V'ger Incident".  It came out last month and has TMP cut to a lean 80 minutes... with a Borg reference at the end.

http://fanedit.org/10700/

Some good stuff, some so-so stuff... frankly it's still slow at 80 minutes, but I think that's because some plot threads were removed.

Anyway, it may give you some ideas what to do and what to avoid.

Shouldn't you just wait for the missing 40 minutes to make it to disc?  There's a good chance some of the undeveloped characters will be fluffed up.

According to Cameron, the extended cut of Avatar that's being released later this year would only have 6-7 minutes of new footage (not 40 minutes...):
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/04/james-cameron-talks-the-enironment-the-avatar-sequel-and-more.html

Personally, I didn't see 6 new minutes, no matter what it's content, as going to add anything really major to the story or allowing me to effectively "re-write" the film's plot (unlike what I could do with Episode 2: Attack of the Clones and it's deleted scenes), so I decided to go ahead and just do an fanedit with what footage that's available.

The workprint was 45 minutes longer.  I know they are only adding 6 minutes for the theatrical re-release, but that doesn't mean more won't be added later.

ADigitalMan's Guide to MPEG2/AC3 Editing
Time

Possessed said:

In case you need to do ac3 editing beyond cutting the whole thing (such as muting a line but keeping the sound effects) the FREEWARE and excellent program Audacity now has full 5.1 ac3 support. No more hypercube transcoder and then wav to ac3 again, you can now just demux the ac3, edit in audacity, save and mux back again. I reccomend this, I've been using audacity for years for other audio, and now it has ac3.

Btw, it should be pointed out that Audicity's hype is misleading.  You cannot work losslessly with AC3 (or mp3 for that matter).

If you are separating and then remerging channels from a lossy source, you are reencoding, it's just being done for you automatically.
