Say what you want about Lucas… but he really did revolutionize visual effects. The stuff ILM was doing in the OT was so far ahead of anyone else.

That’s a tough call. I’m tempted to say TPM Anakin but then I think about how Christensen is an older actor and should have done a better job. I mean, whose fault is it that Little Annie was such a lame character? Certainly not the kid, he was like nine years old or something …then again, can Christensen even be blamed? He’s not an inherently bad actor (I don’t think, I’m not sure) so blame would fall on the writers, directors and whoever cast him for that particular role.
The character was written and directed to be a whiny unlikeable jerk. If actor delivers such character, that means he did a good job.
I certainly think it means the actor did a good job. I think Lucas deserves 90+% of the blame for the acting/dialogue delivery/etc in the PT.
Having screened a whole lot of Hayden movies to help Frink out with his ROTS edit, I can attest that Christensen is a capable actor. One can only do so much with a dodgy script and indifferent direction.
I agree… honestly no one outside of Ewan and Ian Mcdiarmid managed to consistently do a good job delivering their lines.
In particular Natalie Portman was terrible, she wasn’t even trying anymore by ROTS

I can’t remember which was the actual first… but one of Aliens, Robocop and Predator was the first R rated film I ever saw. I turned 10 in 1986… so those movies came at a perfect time for me.
I actually think it’s true that they simply don’t make action movies like they used to… that era was simply full of amazing action films that IMO have been rarely (if ever) topped since.
Aliens, Robocop, Predator, Conan the Barbarian, Die Hard, Total Recall… .even lesser stuff like Commando and Rambo 2 were great in a campy while still being serious kind of way that you don’t see much these days.
As I continue to watch Robocop I’m kind of amazed how awesome it is… like it actually might be one of the best films ever made. I mean how many other films do what they set out to do so damn well?

Phasma doesn’t make sense towards the end of TFA. Why would she give up just because she has a blaster pointed at her head? If she’s some sort of hard core Stormtrooper she would have shown a little more resiliency. It doesn’t make sense for her character. She should have said screw you guys, shoot me, I’m not helping you.
I liked TFA… but man they f-ed up Phasma. I agree that was stupid as hell. Not much of a fanatical solder after all apparently.
Maybe they’ll reveal that Snoke wanted SKB destroyed for some reason 😕
Watching Robocop (1987) right now. What I viewed as just an awesome action film when I was a kid has now become not just that… but one of the most brilliant satires of American Culture ever made.
The funny thing is that the satire was proven completely correct when they started making Robocop action figures, lunchboxes and cartoons for kids.
I laugh at people buying 4K TVs… your eyes are almost certainly not good enough to tell the difference in the vast majority of viewing scenarios. Total waste of money
I succeeded in liking the Phantom Menace at the cinema. I knew that it was some kind of a forced love (which Lucas trumped with Anakin vs. Padme one movie later). But I kinda liked it.
Then the DVD arrived and everything got worse. The pacing was off (an already too long race got longer) and some CG scenes surrounding the pod race got longer and more embarrassing. That was the moment when I knew that Lucas himself got off the track. I didn’t know about the special edition changes back then.
Yep = same thing happened to me… I honestly got some enjoyment about of seeing TPM the first time. It was cool to see Jedi wrecking shit and just to see Star Wars after 16 years. However, the feeling did wear off and the movie did not age well for me
ROTS was garbage. Second worst SW feature ever made. TFA was better.
LOL - I know where you are coming from… and I do feel that way some of the time.
In fact, I’d take it a step further… sometimes I feel like ROTS is the worst SW film period (because it totally fucks up the most important thing in the entire film and PT… regardless of what it gets right)
However, I honestly just usually find it to the be the most entertaining of the PT films… and if I watch it from Obi-Wan’s perspective it can be reasonably enjoyable. Then it’s the story of your moron friend screwing up his life and knocking up his idiot girlfriend, which I can personally relate to.
I can grasp your feelings with the dialog. I remember feeling embarrassed at the cinema when watching phantom and clones. And I really tried to like those movies. In the end I skipped Sith and watched it with a six pack of beer on TV some years later.
I was soo hesistant when watching TFA at the cinema. And that movie succeeded at what I considered impossible at that time: I felt home in the Star Wars universe again. I think part of that might have been Kasdan’s dialogues in it. But there was the magic again that I remembered seeing th OT as a kid.
HA - I also skipped ROTS in the theaters and when I watched it at home I was like “Crap - that one was actually pretty decent, would have liked to see that in the theater”
I know for a fact that there is a small but loud contingent of PT fans who are trying to get their “revenge” by bashing the new Disney films (in particular TFA… Rogue One has been tougher for them since it’s awesome and Lucas himself liked it)
I think a big reason they are mad is that for most people TFA was proof that it wasn’t nostalgia… the prequels really were mostly bad.
Heck, I like TFA (and am excited for Last Jedi), and think it’s enjoyable… but I don’t think it’s as good as the OT (or Rogue One)… .but it’s certainly a much better made movie than the PT films. At least the dialogue isn’t embarrassing to listen to when there are other people in the room.

Lessons From The Screenplay attempts to do just that in a new video, applying classic screenwriting principles to Rogue One and The Force Awakens in order to determine what works and what doesn’t in the franchise’s latest installments. The answer is: a little bit of both.
Good analysis of the female leads, but quite misses the mark by not exploring the other main characters. Some of the failings of one character are made up for by the well done aspects of others. And he falls for the lie that telling is always bad. Telling is sometimes more expedient for story telling when you want to cram a lot into a short space. He also puts all his eggs into the characters and fails to address the plot of the two movies. A very good assessment of Jyn and Rey, but not a very good overall assessment of the two films.
He also ignores the fact that Jyn later becomes active and Rey passive.
I have a 7 and a 4 year old. From a very young age they’ve been told over and over that movies are pretend. I’ve let them watch Star Wars, Jurassic Park and other things along those lines and they don’t get scared at all.
In fact my oldest has developed a bit of an interest in how they do the special effects (which is pretty cool)
So I have the latest (2.6) ANH and TESB now and I gotta say kk650 that you do GREAT work. You basically went with 95+% of the changes I would. Really think you picked the right stuff to take out and leave in. Colors are beautiful and the quality is great.
These are now my goto editions of ANH and TESB (ROTJ is on the way… just SLOW 😃)
The key to getting DE (assuming you can’t find it on torrent sites) without experiencing a lot of pain is to use the Free Rapid Downloader. There are detailed instructions for doing so on the DE Facebook page.
I think some of it depends on demographics. Most Star Wars fans I know are college graduates who were born in the mid to late 70s or early 80s. Pretty much all of us rate Rogue One as either the 2nd or 3rd best SW film.
I’m guessing some younger fans might like TFA more because the characterizations in TFA are more in keeping with modern films… whereas Rogue One has more subtle (and IMO realistic) characterizations and you actually have to pay a bit of attention to fully get the characters. TFA characters are much more larger than life types. Neither preference is necessarily wrong.
Rogue One is also pretty squarely aimed at adults (although my 7 year old really liked it FWIW) whereas TFA is aimed more at family audiences.
Look at you guys, ranking Rogue One with the main movies and not just counting it as an EU movie mostly to avoid comparing it with TFA and choosing which one you really like more.
Rogue One is better than most of the saga movies (including TFA) so it might as well be ranked with them.
You know what the funniest thing about people who hate TFA is? They are almost all either OT purists who hate the PT OR huge PT fans that are pissed off people have been bashing the PT forever and are trying to get revenge for being trolled in the Internet.
