Oh, right. Yeah, that’s probably because they got it right the first time. No “The Swordsman Shot First” bullshit or anything.

There’s still digital alterations in Raiders. At the very least they removed the guiding rod for the boulder and they erased the reflection on the Plexiglas between Harrison Ford and the cobra.

Yeah but that’s the kind of shit that I would never have noticed in a million years or cared about in the slightest. Not CGI Jabba, let alone Greedo shooting, let alone Jedi Rocks level stuff. If that’s all that they did to Star Wars (i.e. clean up obvious mistakes without affecting the story or distracting the viewer) I would have been totally fine with it.

I think any movie that has “Jedi Rocks,” lousy outdated CGI splattered all over the screen for no reason, and a terrible edit of Greedo missing a shot at point blank is pretty much objectively inferior. IMO the only SE you could make a solid argument was actually an improvement is ESB. But even then, the differences are so slight with the Wampa and the Cloud City windows that it just doesn’t matter and there are still a couple things that bug me like the loss of the “Bring my shuttle” line. (Another example of a scene butchered by killing its pacing and emotional impact.) Of all the SE changes to the entire series, the only one that I think comes close to essential is making Ian McDiarmid the Emperor hologram in ESB. I’ve seen people nitpick about how it supposedly looks less like the ROTJ Emperor than the ROTS Emperor, but whatever, it still looks a helluva lot better than that other thing did and is a lot less jarring and continuity-breaking. My ideal cuts of the movies would probably be all the little clean-ups of things like matte lines, the Emperor hologram, and maybe little non-intrusive things like the Cloud City windows. And nothing else changed from the originals.

Wouldn’t it be cool if they got their act together and put up the Ewok movies and the Ewoks and Droids animated series?

Or, even better, the OUT!

[sitcom studio laughter]

I think we’ll get at least 6 out of the 7 films on there.

I’ll be surprised if any of the Star Wars films make it on there, but ANH is definitely not going to be there. I wonder how Indiana Jones’ distribution deal works. We haven’t had a new release of those since the buyout.

There hasn’t been much need/demand for a new Indy release.

But they are making one.

Sue me. I prefer both Lapti Nek and Yub Nub over the music they were replaced by in the SEs. Lapti Nek for me is a catchy 80s tune. Jedi Rocks barely qualifies as a terrible 90s song! Yub Nub, granted not that great either, is more upbeat and IMO fits the Victory vibe of the scene.

100% agree. The so-called “Victory Celebration” in the SEs isn’t a victory celebration at all. It’s like some generic New Age elevator muzak of the kind they would play in a spa. Totally bland and unoriginal. Doesn’t fit with the dancing or the celebrations at all. Say what you will about the Ewoks, but “Yub Nub” sounds like the kind of music they would be playing and it’s not half bad. The scene is literally designed to go with that song so it just seems weird to see the Ewoks running around “dancing” to the other song which is not even dance worthy. The whole thing is just off sync and then it even fails in its transition to the end credits whereas Yub Nub segues perfectly. Maybe it’s just nostalgia talking, but something about the melody of “Yub Nub” triggers a warm happy response in me that seems totally fitting for the end of the series while the other one just leaves me totally cold.

It’s a great example of why these movies should not ever have been fucked with in any case. It’s just totally obvious when something comes up and it wasn’t in the original movies. Whether it’s the song not syncing right to the scene, the new CGI scenes on other planets that we’ve never even seen in the movies, whatever. You can just tell. Even on the first time watching these movies, I’ve known people who can tell something isn’t quite right about these bits. It’s even more obvious with “Jedi Rocks.” It just. Doesn’t. Work. It’s like George stuffed a cheesy 90s music video into the middle of the movie, total distraction. For better or worse, these movies are products of their time and should be LEFT ALONE. It’s like if they went back and remixed The Beatles’ music and added a bunch of modern digital auto-tune and drum beats to “improve” it.

Worst villain: The Emperor
Time

WTF are you talking about? The Emperor is awesome. He’s by far the most fun character in all of Star Wars to imitate and he’s endlessly quotable. Plus he just takes so much joy in being pure evil. I mean look how giddy he gets when he says “Everything is proceeding as I have forseen” and then cackles maniacally. It’s just glorious. Ian McDiarmid is awesome. He elevated ROTJ in every scene he was in and he made the prequels watchable. Just some beautiful scenery chewing all around. The only comparison I can think of is when Al Pacino literally played the Devil in The Devil’s Advocate. Just insane over the top evil, but it’s perfect for the character. He basically is the Devil of the Star Wars universe. Not everybody has to have deep characterization and complex motives in a classic good vs. evil fantasy story like Star Wars. Palpatine wants “unlimited power” and that’s really all we need to know.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Return of the Jedi has a double meaning. Until you see it, you’ll just assume it’s referring to Luke. You might even speculate it’s Obi-Wan. (I know an early draft had him returning from the dead physically.) But you won’t know it’s really about Vader until you’ve seen the movie. So it’s actually kind of a brilliant title.

Empire Strikes Back just tells you the Empire will strike back after the Death Star got blown up. Not exactly a big surprise. It’s not like the title was “Darth Vader Is Luke’s Father.”

I think “Fall of the Resistance” is more of a spoilerific title than any other so far by a longshot. I mean “Attack of the Clones” doesn’t spoil anything cause we already knew there would be Clone Wars, it doesn’t go any farther than that. And “Revenge of the Sith” is no surprise either since we knew what had to happen to set up the originals. TPM, ANH, and TFA are all totally vague titles. This would indeed be unprecedented if it is accurate.

Also, I’m kind of concerned that if it’s true, that means that this may indeed be another “rhyme” to ESB this time by being the “dark” episode where the bad guys win. I was fine with the parallels to the original in TFA, but I want to see something different now. I won’t be happy if it’s just a rewrite of ESB.

Harmy's Despecialized Star Wars 1977 - Color Adjustment Project for v2.7 (released)

I understand why people wouldn’t want to or even have the ability to download a 20 GB file. They might not have the bandwidth speeds needed, their ISP may shut them down, they might not have the storage space to spare, etc. So I don’t think there is any harm in offering a lower quality alternative. If it’s encoded efficiently by someone who knows what they are doing and clearly marked as a re-encode there’s no problem with it. It will still beat the hell out of the GOUT or a Laserdisc and we want as many people as possible to have access to the OOT right? Not really much of a “preservation” if only a handful can get ahold of it.

I think people who defend the 97 either do so out of nostalgia (if they were young when it came out or first saw the movies on a 97 VHS or something) or just because it’s older and has also been superseded by subsequent versions. Therefore it has some of that “I can’t have it, therefore it’s better” appeal due to its unavailability.

i am in the camp of those who first saw the 97 SE and that was all i saw for years. so yes, for me it is very much nostalgia as it was the only version i knew for a long time. if it was the first version you saw, i think you would feel much the same would you not?

You can’t fight nostalgia, or convince someone that they shouldn’t have it.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I agree. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with it. If you like the 97 knock yourself out. It doesn’t hold any special appeal to me since I to this day have never actually seen them in their entirety; I started with the OOT on VHS and the first SE I saw was 04, so the 97 kind of seems like the worst of both worlds from my perspective. But I totally get why it wouldn’t to someone exposed to SW for the first time through the 97 SE. None of us would be here if we weren’t nostalgia nuts in one way or another.

am indifferent to one (Boba Fett voice)

SAD BEEP

Well I mean as much as the prequels suck, I can’t erase their existence from my head. And for continuity reasons, it makes sense that Boba Fett would sound the same as Jango and all the other clones. Even though I think it’s dumb that Boba Fett is a clone in the first place, it does admittedly make sense within the films’ internal logic. Plus the voice alone, even when you take the prequels out of the picture, doesn’t really sound that bad. It fits the character IMO. I don’t really consider either voice to have that much of an advantage over the other. I could take or leave either one. He only has like three lines of dialogue anyway.

Don’t agree at all that the 97 changes were less offensive. They were by far the most drastic and worst. Of the three major new 04 changes, I prefer one (Emperor), am indifferent to one (Boba Fett voice), and only dislike one (Hayden ghost). It actually improved on the 97 in reversing the terrible Luke scream, making Han and Greedo shoot at nearly the same time, and making CGI Jabba look better. So no, I don’t get it when people say the 97 is somehow better and closer to the originals. Unless they’re just talking about the colors or something. But the actual content is at least as bad. In some ways slightly worse, in some ways slightly better. It’s all a travesty if it has “Jedi Rocks” and Greedo gets a shot off.

Rare? The OT was last available in theaters last December.

Not on 35mm. Plus I think that was even more limited than this.

I don’t think it was. Even Regal was showing it.

Really? Huh, it wasn’t in my area.

yeah, theaters near me showed all 6 films in the lead up to TFA. if Alamo wants to call this rare, they are either pathetically misinformed, or it needs to be something like the 97SE which hasn’t been seen in quite some time.

Well… Yeah. That’s exactly what it is.
