i meant to day it could be legacy not saying it is legacy

Legacy is great, but I’d be hoping for something sourced from better materials than release prints.

Anyway, no-one at Lucasfilm seems interested in the OUT, the merger with Fox would solve some distribution problems, but it doesn’t give any real change to the motivation of Disney/Lucasfilm to embark on an OUT restoration.

I hope that changes, but there seems zero interest within Disney to do it.

if they’d only hire you + mike + rob + dre + ohteedee + harmy to work with scans of negatives to rebuild the original films in 4k frame by frame, shot by shot, reel by reel…

the community will probably have to use whatever the next revamped/restored version they release to retail as a source for the next generation of preservation projects.

On top of that, if they got criterion involved, the preservation would be just 👌👌👌 flawless

Help Wanted: '2001: A Space Odyssey' - 35mm Preservation (original 1968 prints obtained) (* unfinished project *)

For the most part. There was no signs of mold or any type of aging aside from dirt, dust, and one frame near the beginning that seemed damaged. According to this source and some others I saw, Chris Nolan had access to the original negatives and produced new prints in reopened kodak labretories in India.

2001: A Space Odyssey SEVERE Color Changes in 50th Anniversary Edition! :(
Time

I saw one of the screenings of the 70mm just last night. After I got back home, I checked my dinky galaxy s8 to see if the 4k restoration trailer from Chris Nolan was anywhere near accurate. I can say without a shadow of doubt, this is the most accurate film transfer I have ever seen. Of course the quality was lacking in terms or digital vs crystal clear (and stuttery) celluloid film. There is no revisionism in terms of white balance, crushed blacks or anything, except for an exceptional clean up job of dust and scratches. The old bluray definitely stinks of revisionism and modern standards of the time. I’m glad we had someone like Chris Nolan overseeing the whole thing. Wish we had someone just like that for the beloved original trilogy… 😒

You know, I think you are right.
They did utilise a lot of “found objects” during the production, and I think I have identified the source of the Bacta Tank.

It looks like a Black & Decker Spacemaster.

In just three minutes, we will all be enjoying hot jedi toasties!

Yay!

If my experience with toaster ovens means anything, Han, Leia and Threepio are the ones at the highest risk of being toasted. Luke will come out vaguely warm.

Perhaps even… Luke warm.

groans well played… well played indeed…

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

https://www.facebook.com/HamillHimself/posts/1899950250334099

I think Hamill realized how much his first two statements have divided the fanbase. So now this is his third response… “I regret voicing my doubts & insecurities in public.Creative differences are a common element of any project but usually remain private. All I wanted was to make a good movie. I got more than that- Rian Johnson made an all-time GREAT one!”

So I think we can settle that he now he really has retracted his prevoous statements of not being down with the direction RJ was taking Luke’s character…

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

The casino planet actually added quite a bit to the story and for what is to come. Little threads in the film that lead up to the ending and also showed that not everything is black and white (the resistance is dealing with the same people who deal with the first order). The resistance has now become the rebellion and is all but gone at the end of the film. Something that was said earlier on (and again later). “We are the spark that will light the fire that will burn the first order down”.

Canto Bight is a planet where the rich and elite congregate in luxurious overindulgence while the rest of the inhabitants live in extreme poverty and slavery, including the children. Finn and Roses interactions with those inhabitants is a major factor here. they show the willingness to fight for freedom. At the end we see the children telling their story and then a single child use the force to grab the broom, he has the rebellion ring. The seeds of rebellion are planted. So Finn and Rose are that spark that will light the fire that will burn the first order down.

There are so many little details that are easily missed on a single viewing. I’ll write a proper review once i have seen it again. So far i liked it.

It is nice that they added this moral grey area for the fipm, but wasn’t that the whole point of Rogue One, showing how imperfect both sides are? It makes sense (and honestly I think they did this whole idea a bit better than R1), it just was the weakest link in terms of the overall story and pacing.

Speaking of which, thought this movie was great, guess I’m going with the public opinion as this is my new favorite Star Wars movie. I just really liked the fact it took so many risks. Even the scene with Leia, while pretty cheesy, still made me cry and felt completely unpredictable for me. The writing and structure of this film is something to be disired, but it is made up for, in my eyes, with the many risks in trying to stay unpredictable and add lore to the saga. This film is probably the best directed in my opinion, clearly everyone was 100% when they were trying to bring their A game to this.

The one thing I’m on and off about is the cinematography. Unlike The Force Awakens which had some really great framing, so moments felt a bit off in terms of lighting. It is really good lighting, it just felt way too exagerated. Also anyone else who saw this in IMAX 3D, where the hell was the expanding aspect ratio. Saw this in a li-MAX theater, but they still opened it up in Force Awakens. I thought for sure the Crait battle was going to be it or Snoke’s death scene. Idk, if someone could get back to me on that, that would be fantastic.

Anywho, really loved it. Had a bunch of problems (most have already been addressed), but it didn’t detract from the movie for me at all. Definetly needs a second viewing and can’t wait to discuss further with the peeps here.

Chris Stuckmann was totally right about fans are going to mixed. Exhibit A…

Jedit: I forgot to ask, anyone else worried they might be setting up some weird love square between Rey, Finn, Poe, and Rose? The way they ended those specific characters moments felt like they where setting up something…

Another Hobbit fanedit (Peter Jackson Edition) (* unfinished project *)
Time

Well, been a while since I touched this thread. I have worked on the edit as much as I could, but alas, life caught up with me. I’m gonna be extremely busy this December with many a college and family visit (not to mention a premiere for a pretty low-quality movie that anyone on this site would know nothing about 😉. But come January something might come out that’s not the full version, but it is something. I’ll keep you guys posted, and thank you so much for being patient with me. I know how hard it is to wait for cool stuff like this, but that’s what I love about this community. Everyone is just so darn humble with each other it warms my heart. Hope to hear from you guys soon and give something in return ❤️

It’s getting close, I’m thinking about releasing a v.1 around November to see the intial reaction or what needs more tinkering (but just the regular 2D version with only green removal and partial desaturation). I’m very close to being done with There and Back Again, but I’m still having trouble with the first movie’s transition between AUJ and DOS, but it is coming along slowly but surely. Senior year might make this a pain but i’ll push through. I have seen Kerr’s version which I was impressed by some of the changes and plan on crediting him in the end credits. Same with the guy from JRR Tolkein’s The Hobbit version (which I really recommend checking out). But hang on till november cause that is most likely when it will come out (if not earlier if everthing works out 😉 )

Raiders of the Lost Ark - Bluray color balanced (LUTs Released) (a WIP)
Time

It does look pretty amazing Dre. Sorry that the discussion on kk650 board didn’t go so well. If I have one comment, the shot of Indy running away from the Hovitos and the pan american plane shot, the sky (mostly the clouds) looks a tad bit bright for my eyes, it could be my monitor, but to me they look bright. Everything else looks fantastic with just the right level of yellow that I can appreciate over both the bluray and the 35mm print!

Info Wanted: 'LOTR - FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING': Green tint removed?
Time

kk650, do you have any information of what the actual film print of Fellowship looked like? If not, I remember someone on OT.com saying that the extended blurays were closer in color to the actual film print, but they still had a long way to go because of that green tint and they were more like 75% accurate, might be a good place to start. Idk, something to look into for your regrade, if you’re interested…

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

Adywan, I must say you have improved so much from your days of the original star wars revisited, not just as a faneditor, but a filmmaker as well. This is 100% the best version of empire strikes back I have seen and the best fanedit I have ever watched. I got really choked up when I saw the in memoriam for your mum and dad, it shows how much time and effort you have put into this project. Thank you so much for your hard work into a project that I hope to god this gets the recognition it deserves. You deserve a long earned break for your troubles. Hell maybe this will be the turning point for disney to give credit where credit is due… Anyways, I wish you the best and hope to see your work again in the future!

Cheers, DH12

I’ll see what i can do about the edges, i was planing on making a separate video where the parchment changes for every frame and detailed lines are a little more faded. (The parchment layer is more of a style choice that hones more to Alan Lee’s and John Howe’s style, and to cover up the animation so it looks less like artifacts)

So after a long time messing around I finally have a comparison for you guys,

https://youtu.be/b0g2n0pNLV4

So for the LOTR color all I did was lower the contrast, saturation, increased the brightness, and removed the green blanket covering through the whole film

For the animated version, I layered three animation filters, an old parchment filter, and more messing with the brightness

What I am interested in hearing from you guys is, should I leave the original colors in for the animated version, remove just the green blanket, or have the exact same color correction from the live action version in the animated version?

I did some messing around over the weekend and I thought to myself, everyone who talks about how overusing the cgi in The Hobbit makes it look like a cartoon. So why not make The Hobbit segments into a cartoon? If all works well, I imagine I will be releasing 4 versions of the movie (The one I have been working on (2D, 3D) and the cartoon version (2D, 3D)). So far the results have been pretty great with the cartoon style being similar to that seen at the beginning with the red book. It blends the cgi elements well enough that everything looks like it shares the same space. Just something for now…
