10 years of the Special Editions
Time
I pity Lucas. He was once a great and promosing filmmaker. SW was an excellent film, and watching it, you know the man behind the camera had that special something that all the great filmmakers have. Watching documentaries where we see a young Lucas shooting SW, we see a filmmaker that has a passion and an affinity for making movies, and telling stories, and he has lots and lots of potential. Skip ahead to ROTJ. A good ending to a great trilogy. Not an excellent ending, but satisfying, kind of like a McDonalds double cheeseburger. You know if you went to Burger King and got a double cheeseburger from them, it would be much better, the McDonalds cheeseburger is good enough. But how did the man who made the excellent Burger King Cheesburger end up making the McDonalds one...in six short years, he began losing his flair.

And then, in 1997, there's the Special Editions. We could tell Lucas was losing his heart of a filmmaker with ROTJ, but the special editions shown that he had really lost it. He obviously did what he thought best with those Special Editions, but its nothing the public, or Star Wars fans, really liked or enjoyed. A good filmmaker knows what the public loves, and delivers it. George Lucas made SW in 1977, and it was a film the public ate up, and made legions of fans. The SE got rid of many legions of fans. How? Lucas lost the heart of a filmmaker, and replaced it with something else. This was proved in concrete with the prequels. Yes, the public may be impressed with flashy visuals and lots of (cheesy) action, but give them something really fun, really good, like the original SW, and they will LOVE it. They won't just be entertained for a few hours, and forget the experiance the next day, it will stick with them, and they'll want to experiance it over and over. People wanted to experiance SW over and over, because it stuck with them, but few truly had that experiance with the prequels. Some may explain it with the old line "You can't strike gold twice," but a good filmmaker, a filmmaker with that filmmaker's heart, does. He doesn't strike gold twice. He strikes it over and over and over and over, until the end. Sometimes you miss, but in the end, those misses don't matter because of all the gold.

We're at the tenth anniversary of the SE. Of course, I think of 30th anniversary, but Lucas is probably thinking tenth, thinking that the SE is the true versions, that the original was just work in progress, yadda yadda yadda...and it makes me pitty him. Alot. For someone with so much potential to lose sight of that filmmaker's heart is sad. Like CO said, Lucas broke up Star Wars fans into a bunch of different sects. It's not just sad, it's funny, in a twisted sort of way.

Global Warming

1. If you want to post off-topic, there's another board for it. This is not the place to discuss off topic.

2. Global Warming is bullshit. It was hotter (global average) a hundred years ago then it is now. Yeah, it ain't healthy to put all that carbon dioxide in the air, but it'll take decades and decades to get bad enough to cause clataclysmic events. Global Warming is a huge publicity stunt, nothing more.

3. How many freaking threads have you made in the past hour? Jeez man...And who exactly is it that's "Back?"

OOT has 1 day left
Time
I bet they'll be gone by March, or earlier. They just stop producing them tomorrow, that's all. Actually, the final shipment of the DVD's has probably already been sent. Like someone else said, we'll see used copies at stores like FYE for quite a while, I'm sure.

What Star Wars DVD cash in will Lucas dish out next? Only time will tell, and frankly, I don't give a damn. I bought the 9/12 releases, and those are the only SW DVD's I'll ever have. They could have been a lot more, but I took it and I don't care what DVD release Lucas does next. He and the fanboys can have a fun with whatever new overpriced piece of shit he comes out with next.

Took a pair of scissors to the SEs and the artwork....

I love that story Cable...especially the pictures of what finally happened to the SE discs.

ROCKY BALBOA
Time
I just saw it today, and I loved every last minute of it. It was a perfect end to a great series, and sparked a huge range of emotions from comedy to sadness, and pretty much everything inbetween. Most of all, it was a movie with heart, and lots of it, not made for money, but for giving people a good time at the movies and to give a classic series a fitting end, and it shows on screen. Lots of movies today are good, but most of them are made soley for money, and it shows. This has been a pretty good movie year, but for me, no movie this year reached the level of quality of Rocky Balboa. Most movies this year just didn't have the heart Rocky had. I'm really glad I caught this in theaters. My only real complaint about the film is the commentators in the end. They were kind of annoying, and could have been ommitted. Of course, fake commentating in movies only works when its parody, like in the film Dodgeball. When films try to do real commentary, it never works. Other than that, an excellent film.

Star Wars Silent Movie
Time
Freaking hilarious. It seemed like a real silent film. Loved it. It would be really cool to see someone do a fan edit of the original film in a silent version, like Erik outlined below:

A silent version with title cards would be great.

Now, if you found somebody to do a ragtime piano interpretation of the John Williams music to accompany the film, that would be sheer perfection.

Has anyone ever found the theme in ragtime piano on the internet? I'm sure its probably on there. Doing the first five minutes of the movie would be really funny if someone had that sound clip.

I totally love the 360. It rocks. The controllers are the most comfortable I've ever used, and the wireless is perfect. I only have one real 360 game, and only 3 total, the other 2 being Halo and Halo 2 (which rock.) Haven't gotten Xbox live yet, but I bet it'll only make me love that system more. It really is too cool. I think the Wii will be the best in terms of games, but for online and much more, the 360 can't be beat.

I think the PS3 is so overrated. People are paying 6000 bucks on eBay for a system with less than three good games out, is ugly and horribly huge, has backwards compatibility problems, and has few really redeeming qualities at this point, besides the fact it plays Blu-Ray. I hope the Wii goes the distance. It really is, along with the 360, the system to have.

And speaking of the Wii, Chaltab, I got one for Christmas. I'm loving it!

Although my girlfriend beat the pants off of me at Wii Sports last night.

I got a Wii for Christmas too. It rocks. I'm having troubles getting into the Shop Channel, but other than that, everything is as smooth as silk. Luckily, I've had a much less embaressing time with Wii Sports. I kicked my brothers ass at boxing, which is my favorite of all the Wii sports to play.

I might be seeing the movie tomorrow. It looks great based on all the reviews and fan reaction.

Comcast's ONDemand free movie section had all 5 movies, and I've never seen them before, so I went ahead and started watching them. i'm almost through the second one, and they're pretty darn good. I'm excited to see this new one, though there are so many movies out I want to see, I can't guarentee I'll be seeing it any time soon. I'm never behind on the new movies usually, but there's a few from early December I have yet to see. I think Balboa is near the top of my list though.

Thanks for the mini-review Wesyeed!

The CJ's here in Denver don't have exactly the same menu and have those famous "six dollar burgers".

I'm in Denver too! I've never eaten at a CJ's though.

I used to live in Des Moines, and there are Hardees out there. I loved them, and still do when we go back to visit. A drive through Iowa is a great way to find a Hardees I think. It aint like McDonalds or anything, but there are enough to be able to get what you want.

From another view, remember that the Sith waited thousands of years and through countless generations of Sith Lords before they made their move and took over the galaxy. Perhaps Yoda thought that the Jedi would have to do something similar, and that Luke/Leia aren't meant to take on the emperor or Vader?

Could be, could be....but when you have to think that abstract and that deep to fill in a plot hole, you know there's soemthing seriously, seriously wrong.

Dominoes or Pizza Hut?
Time
Ah, finally. The definitive fight. The ultimate brawl. The final stand between two pizza delivery megapowers. I voted for PIZZA HUT. Domino's pizza is fine, but Pizza Hut is by far the best you can get when ordering from your home and wanting it in under an hour. Thier thin crust pizza is unparalleled, and I have a soft spot for stuffed crust.

And what happened the Little Ceaser's? Haven't seen one of those in years.

The Amazing Spider-Man: A Spence Edit (Released)
Time

I think something that both the Spider-Man movies suffered from was the attempts to make it a typical teen drama with superpowers. There are too many scenes in these movies that show Peter's inner struggle, overkill Peter's crush on Mary Jane, etc, and having the villians/actual point of the movie to be secondary to the action. For example, in Spider-Man 2, it always seemed like to me that Doc Ock was a minor character, and it was in many ways a two-hour teaser trailer to whatever movie they finally have Harry Osbourne take on Spider-Man as the Green Goblin. I understand that some of the drama is very nessicary for the movies, but I think they really went overkill with it.

IMO, the first one didn't go too overboard with it, and was ok, but they totally went overkill on the soap opera romance of Spider Man 2. I was kind of glad when it was over that we wouldn't have any more of this overdrawn romance in SM3, because they were already together, and then SP3 could finally be a pure superhero action movie. Then I watch the trailer for SM3 and yup...more soap opera. Why can't MJ just give him a kiss on the way out the door and let Spidey kick ass. I loved SP2 because it mixed intense action and drama fairly well, and while it went overboard on the romance drama, I knew it was so they had it out of the way for SM3. SM3 still looks awesome, but I hope they didn't do overkill on the romance again. It's unnecesairy at this point.

That sequence was to show Peter another option. A life without any problems, just with a nice girl that likes him for who he is. A very calm life, not the hectic Spider-Man life that gives him so much problems in his private life.

You're right, but I still find it slow and unnecesary. She likes Peter, which is cool, but this "enternal conflict" was the point of the movie anyway, so reinforcing it with that scene just seems overkill. It's a good scene that makes sense in the end, really, but it's kind of repetitive.

The Persecution Season is Heating Up
Time
I can believe it. This world is fucking nuts. It's awful, and its horrible, but its real, and its sad.

Schools can't legally surpress your religion. Now, if your religion is to dance around nude every day at lunch time and sacrifice a goat, I think there's probably a line to draw there in schools. But let's say I answered a science question with an answer stating that"God did it." I would get it wrong, and I know I would probably get a detention for it for being such a "smart ass." Then I could say that I believe in God and I am firm in my answer. Could they, would they, still give me punishment? Probably. Now, if I did that, I really would be being a smart ass. But let's say there really was a kid who believed that and really did do it in full honesty. Should they punish him? No.

The old Star Wars comics - general discussion thread
Time
The only problem I have with it all is the emporer clones, as you said. The rest of it makes sense. I think ROTJ's ending shows that they'd finally won the war, but in a way, it wasn't all over yet. It never says that, but you kind of get that vibe that peace will come most definately, but there's still a few hurdles. That's why the SE f'ed it up so bad with that ending where the whole galaxy is celebrating. Killing the emporer doesn't liberate a galaxy. It's the biggest part, but there's lots left.

First, the book is really nothing like the movie. The book follows the same basic plot structure of Star Wars, which is to say, the story reaches a few key points, kind of like connect the dots. The author hits the dots, but everything on the way to the dots is his own, and its original and fun. Plus, lots and lots of stories have followed the same structure of Star Wars, long before Star Wars. Star Wars was great, but it wasn't exactly "new" in its plot structure.

Don't judge a book by its movie. The movie resembles Star Wars even closer. Although it hits the same dots, it leaves out all the great original and compelling stuff that made the book. I really wish people would stop flaming the book because the movie sucked. (You can read my review of the film in the off topic forum Eragon Thread.)

The thing about Christmas is that, in my mind, its so much more than just celebrating the birth of Jesus. Christmas is also a time to celebrate giving and loving, and being with your family, and togetherness in general. (I know that was badly written.) It's very hard to put into words, but you really don't have to believe in Jesus or be Christian to have the Christmas Spirit. Celebrating Christmas with the trees and the santa displays and wishing your fellow man a Merry Christmas doesn't have to have anything to do with the birth of Jesus. It's just showing and celebrating and wishing upon others the Christmas Spirit. I have a Jewish friend, and they celebrate Christmas, to an extent. They put up a small tree and exchange presents. Celebrating Christmas and having the Christmas spirit doesn't have to be directly accosciated with religion. It's so sad that people try to be so politically correct that they miss the point of it and make Christmas a political struggle.

And schools go nuts about this stuff, and its not just Christmas they go batshit insane with the rules about. I'm in 8th grade and you need a permission slip to watch a PG movie in school. It's nuts.

I agree with ADM. Where does PC madness end? I acutally wrote a short story last week, parodying political corectness in today's society. I had lots of fun with it too, but the thing is, if you take out all the exageration from it, it could actually happen. In my story, a young boy dies trying to make a reindeer at the zoo fly...and instantly the legend of Santa and his reindeer become the most politically incorrect topic that Christmas season.

I think its sad that even at my school we can't put up Chirstmas decorations or really celebrate the season at all. When you're at school every day of the week and there's nothing Christmas-y about it, it really gets rid of the spirit of the season. My orchestra director actually got in trouble last year for saying Merry Christmas to the audience at our Winter concert. He told us we could still preform Christmas songs, but none of the speeches made could use the term in it. It's seriously almost funny. But the sheer stupidity of it gets in the way of being funny.
