The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

I didn’t mind the movie ending with finding Luke, but I really hated the scene. I suddenly felt like I was watching a Nat Geo documentary. Skellig Michael and the cinematography just pulled me right out of the film.
It was good to see Luke though.

I felt the opposite. I really liked the scene but hated it ending with Luke like that. I’ll play devil’s advocate and take the unpopular opinion here. I agree that it should have ended when she flies away and the resistance is all standing there watching her go.

If they were just upfront with us from the get go and said “Luke skywalker is not in episode 7, but he will be in episode 8” I don’t think people would have minded his absence.

The end of the film perfectly sets up that you’re gonna see Luke in the next film. You didn’t need the tacked on cliffhanger ending. It did feel to me like the end of a tv show episode where they feel the need to tag on an unnecessary teaser at the end to get you to watch next week.

I don’t hate the ending, but I think it would have been better in the long run if it had ended there. Felt like the logical place to end it.

Plus then they aren’t obligated to start episode 8 directly where episode 7 ends. There could be some passage of time in between the films.

Not to mention every Star Wars film prior has ended on a wide shot of a group of heroes standing, usually staring into the distance.

While the Luke/Rey shot could still fall under this criteria, the spinning helicopter shot felt weird to me.

Once again though, I don’t wanna sound like I hated it. It worked fine for me and I liked the execution of the scene, I would have just personally preferred it be saved for 8.

You’ve been invaluable here, Poita. Life comes first and I’m sure we all understand and respect your decision. I am personally proud to have been a part of this forum at the same time as you were in my opinion doing some of your best work.
In whatever future endeavors you find yourself in, I’m sure all of us here will be there to support you.
The force will be with you, always.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

I don’t see the publicity as a problem at all. Either lucasfilm continues not to care, they see it’s cutting into their profits and decide to do their own OOT release, or they C&D anyways and piss off the fans. Given that since the sale to Disney, they seem to be focusing the whole company around fan relations, I doubt they’d do something that so publicly foresakes them.

Now I’ve heard from what I consider to be a pretty reliable source from Disney (not lucasfilm so take it with a grain of salt but still) that an OOT release is part of the plan to be released within the next couple years, probably alongside another release. So my guess is that they’re going to turn a blind eye to this stuff in the meantime, especially since the publicity helps fuel demand for an official release, then when they release their oot, they’ll probably start cracking down on fan releases a bit more.

“Clearly, this fan release of the film is not legal and will most likely be shut down by Disney and Lucasfilm lawyers soon.”

Lmao sure. As if we all don’t have copies that can be continually redistributed if such a thing were to happen. Besides, lucasfilm has already made it clear that they really don’t care about the fan efforts here.

Maybe once we get this branching thing working, you can just send me your crawl and I can export it with matching settings to my own version so we can tinker with that. I think for my own ANH branching attempt, I will just use the 1997SE footage. I like your flyover better since it has the better lasers and all, but I think I want to go with the crawl text that has less gateweave and matches the 2.5 SW crawl in that sense.

Yeah I get that. If the Blu-Ray was just a personal project for my eyes only and I wasn’t concerned with 1981 accuracy, I probably would’ve just spliced in the 97 crawl for the more stable crawl. In my next version, however the crawl will be recreated again from scratch in 1080p which will be a lot cleaner and the only gate weave will be a very slight gate weave I’ll add in myself.

If you like the 77 flyover better, you could probably splice from the 97 crawl to the 77 pandown/flyover. They use the same starfield. Not sure if there are any differences due to compositing though

You can use anything you want of course. Please let me know if there’s anything specific that I can send you lossless versions of, since I really don’t think it can take another lossy re-encode. 😃

I’d be interested in any of the scenes you posted images of regarding the death star, both interior and exterior. Your corrections look lovely.
