According to the AoTC novel, nobody knew you could preserve your mind in the physical world after death until Yoda heard QuiGon's voice telling Anakin not to kill the sandpeople. Before then, it was assumed that their minds went on to an afterlife or ceased to exist.

With this prompt, Yoda discovered the Unifying Force, a more powerful level of the Force. This is why ObiWan and Yoda dissapered, so they could guide Luke even if they should die.
