Idea: Errol Flynn film preservations?
Time
DarkGryphon2048 said:Another thread in a very short amount of time. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm quite a fan when it comes to Errol Flynn's filmography. My personal collection I only have what has already been released onto DVD and the single film of his which has been released onto HDDVD. Said film is The Adventures of Robin Hood.
Now, I know the majority of his films have been released onto VHS although I know of not if any of them have been on LD.
Fellow Flynn Fans, I beseech you in preserving these films for the interim for when the eventual DVD release comes about. Here's a list of the Flynn titles I'm most interested in seeing be preserved onto DVD. (Remember, as soon as an official DVD is released by WB, consider these to be interim releases only.) Only six to keep the list short.

Desperate Journey
Edge of Darkness
Northern Pursuit
Uncertain Glory
Silver River
Adventures of Captain Fabian

Thank you for your consideration.

Scrap Desperate Journey and Edge of Darkness. They'll be in a future Errol Flynn boxset. Four's a Crowd hasn't been "officially" released since it's from Warner Archive on a DVD-R. If it's on a DVD-R from a company, you fucking bet I'll make a copy of it.

With other people with the know how and a DVR, these following Flynn films will be shown on TCM. (Not sure if EST or PST)

That Forsyte Woman - September 29, 3:15PM

Escape Me Never - October 13, 10:00PM

Northern Pursuit - October 13-14, 12:00AM (Might be in the next set?)

Doesn't even matter to me which titles are released onto DVD. Errol Flynn is literally one of those actors who's filmography is worth purchasing. Any other Flynn fans?

Having purchased the regular DVD version, I have no disc five. Still really irritates me. For us old fashioned DVD guys, we only get five discs if we decided to dish out $80 + dollars for the brief case version. Yet BD and HD guys get all five discs in the basic version.

I have the HDDVD of the 5-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition on my shelf. There's a commentary by the person who wrote that Blade Runner book I also have

Whoa! The work print has a commentary by Philip K. Dick? I had no idea! That is freakin awesome! No I wish even more that they hadn't decided to short non HD adopters by excluding the workprint.

It's a bit difficult to believe seeing as he died before the film was finished wasn't it Paul Sammon's audio interviews strung together?

Yeah it was Paul M. Sammon. I forget the title of the Blade Runner behind-the-scenes book he did but I own it. Great read.

I have the Blu-ray set, but my disk 5 (The Work Print) is just a normal DVD, not a Blu-ray disk.  This was an error with a few sets. Hope it will make my set worth more money to collectors in the long run. For now, it's just annoying that I will have to buy another set just to get all 5 disks in Blu-ray format.

Both the HDDVD/Blu-ray have discs 2 and 4 as DVD's. Discs 1, 3 and 5 are HDDVD/Blu-ray.

I think the bars are indicative of it being a 70mm print? I'll give my HDDVD disc 5 a look sometime.

Im sure this has been covered before, if not here probably on another forum

Anyway, so I was watching this and and the documentary and whatnot and they state that this was taken from the last surviving workprint of this movie, which is debatable Im sure and Im pretty sure the print was a 70mm print but I cant remember if that was stated or not.....they also state that since it was the last print that the quality was depreciated but still in acceptable limits.

Ok, so I start to watch it and I got the feel that the quality is spot on VERY good but the thing that everyone talks about are these bars on the screen which run horizontal not vertical.

To me....this is CLEARLY not a problem with the print but instead with the way it was transfered. I also think it has something to do with it being a 70mm print source, because the films AR is around 2.18 but when these horizontal bars are taken into account it appears the AR would have been around 2.35, which would have been the AR of the 35mm print.

So what Im getting at is that they transferred this print like a 35mm and then corrected for this after the fact and thus the bars appear. Because I dont see any other way these bars can appear throughout the actual 70mm print, if anything it would have been vertical.

Does anyone know anything or heard anything about this?

I have the HDDVD of the 5-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition on my shelf. There's a commentary by the person who wrote that Blade Runner book I also have. Hell, I could even ask Charlie de Lauzirika too.

Original theatrical everything ftw.

I prefer owning the original HK versions of Jackie Chan films, even the Universe release (The picture quality is crap though) of the original 120m version of WHO AM I? I just wish high quality original versions of Mr. Nice Guy, WHO AM I?, Police Story IV: First Strike and Rumble in the Bronx are released. Regarding THE MYTH, I'll be purchasing the Blu-ray. Oh, and alot of the Digitally Remastered titles I own of HK/Chinese films, I prefer watching it in the original theatrical audio. Tai Seng can go suck OVER 9000 rotten eggs since they're never getting a cent from me.

In other words, remake does not always = crappy disposable money grabber, but more often than not they do. Same for sequels, some exist just for the sake of milking a little more out of an already successful film. But sometimes they are very worthy continuations of the original story.

I agree and I should have elaborated in my original post.  There have been a few remakes that I thought were fantastic, well-written, and well-performed films that were worthy of the originals.

It just seems like we've entered a period where the mindset is that everything suddenly needs to be remade - and I don't agree with that at all.  So many people seem lost  to the story of a film - the true essence of what's being presented, the reason we're sitting in the theater in the first place.

Thousands of stories have been told very well over the years and don't need updating or fixing.  Better special effects, shorter skirts, more blood, and current slang don't necessarily make the story better.

The list of remakes that I've enjoyed and felt were as good or better than the originals is short.  These come to mind right now;

Ocean's 11

Solaris

King Kong (2005)

3:10 To Yuma

Batman Begins

Batman Begins isn't a remake, it's a whole new start of a new Batman film franchise. Anothology = 1989-1997 and Nolan is 2005=current.

I'm afraid for that 'burn on demand' program.  It basically means they're going to neglect deeper catalog titles using the excuse that they're available on demand.

For a $20 DVD (which is expensive for today's market) I expect restored anamorphic video, clean 5.1 audio (whenever possible), english subtitles, and a few nice extras (at least a trailer).

Professional and proper encoding/authoring takes time... that I'm sure they won't bother with.

I think what it will turn out to be is a disc in a cardboard sleeve with just a movie, a generic 'burn on demand' menu, and video quality that looks like they capped it off the air.

No matter how great the lure of a 'lost movie', I don't think I'd buy anything under those conditions.

I prefer original theatrical audio myself instead of a bumped up remix with added foley. Case in point is THE TERMINATOR original 1.0 track is vastly superior to the 5.1 with the added foley effects.

Oh for fuck sake why cant we just leave some movies alone...... To me, sequels will always be more acceptable than just "rebooting" a franchise, it completely devalues movies these days, there could always be that idea lingering that "we can just remake it" and it's turning hollywood into a giant clusterfuck, excuse me, a bigger clusterfuck than it has to be.

While I agree with you on general principle, there have been cases of remakes actually being (arguably, of course) superior to the original.

The few remakes I feel actually do improve upon the source material:

- The Thing (1982)
- Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - I should note here that I do enjoy the original quite a bit, I just think the Sutherland-starring version is far superior
- Ocean's 11 (2001) - not so much "superior to" as "just as good as"
- Cape Fear (1991)
- Ben-Hur (1959)
- 3:10 to Yuma (2007)

That's all I can think of at the moment.  Then there are the remakes that change enough that they're still good, but not really comparable to the original (such as Seven Samurai vs The Magnificent Seven, or Yojimbo vs Fistful of Dollars).

My point is, while most remakes are unnecessary and utter shit, sometimes they work.

I agree with John Carpenter's THE THING (The HDDVD has glorious silver halide crystals preserved! Original = FUCKING RUN FROM CABBAGE MONSTER MAN vibe!); Invasion of the Body Snatchers (I also agree with your sentiment. Now that I think of it, since Ronny Cox was in a cameo in the '78 release, one could consider the film to be a sort of sequel which carries on the story? Or just perhaps I'm reading too into it and it's just a quaint nudge. I own the 2-Disc Collector's Edition.); Cape Fear (Except I do quite like the acting of Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck in the original). I can't say much for the remaining titles since I haven't gotten around to the originals.

Regarding Seven Samurai vs. The Magnificent Seven, I utterly feel both are superiously bad-ass in their own respects. It's been a damn long time since I've seen either YOJIMBO or A Fistful of Dollars (except I own the Sergio Leone Anthology, just haven't watched it yet.:P)

Although I haven't seen it and have zero desire to see it, Infernal Affairs Trilogy >>>>>> The Departed. I was in a restaurant with my Mom when the movie was released and she told me she saw it. I started giving her what happened in Infernal Affairs and she said it was in the remake. No thanks I don't want to see it and already think it's highly overrated. Scorsese should've received an Oscar for a different film. (I usually hang out with my Mom every now and then. Her apartment is quite nice.)

This would be more of a newer adaptation compared to actually being a remake. DUNE. David Lynch's version on HDDVD is a glorious wonder to behold and I felt there were too many things missing. If the studio had given him more control for the film instead of butting in all the damn time, oh well. I did quite like the 2000 mini-series too.

I've heard the Director's Cut of Daredevil is above and beyond higher quality compared to the Theatrical version. But I wouldn't know since I've never seen the Director's Cut yet.

The director's cut is a complete and total master piece compared to the awfulness that is the theatrical. But by its own merits, it is still a dog of a film. It does successfully remove a few of the problems of the theatrical version, but still holds onto many. The bottom line is, that movie absolutely sucked.

Awhile ago I checked Netflix and they don't carry the Director's Cut. Oh well. Perhaps Marvel will remake the film in a few years?

If you like Metal Gear Solid a lot, Twin Snakes is worth picking up on the cheap.

The Twin Snakes would have been great if not for the following problems:

- The ability to shoot in first person makes the game insanely easy compared to the original MGS
-
Some of the re-recorded voice acting isn't quite up to snuff (though I have no problem with the change of Mei Ling and Naomi's accents)
- The ridiculous cutscenes (jumping off of a missile? WTF?)
- The fact that, despite all the changes, everything felt just a little too much the same (in fact, the majority of the game itself just feels like they took the original PS1 maps and put better textures on them), though this is a double-edged sword because you can't make it too different either

But I still enjoyed it quite a bit - I just highly prefer the original.

When I played it I thought Snake did a damn backflip off the missle! LOL. Also if you can, look for a component cable thing for the GC if you can. I never should've sold my GameCube...

I tried out that demo for the first Episodic Wallace and Gromit game awhile ago. Good fun. Also been playing the Visual Boy Advance emulator and a ton of ROMs, including POKEYMANZ: Leaf Green. Great for a time killer but other than that the series if silly shit.

Speaking of emulators, I'd need to get a new USB analog controller since the left stick acts stupid in ZSNES and my NES emulator. So I'm stuck with GBA for now. I've also been downloading some Genesis/Mega Drive ROMs, GHOSTBUSTERS especially, and been looking for an Amiga emulator. I <3 ScummVM.

Star Wars being remade is meh. The OOT shows a time when George Lucas was an innovative and proud director. It might be nice for some but I don't know...

I suppose you missed my subtle hints of a SW remake being a bit like waving a slab of raw meat in front of a rampaging lion, then chucking it as far from yourself as humanly possible. All about diverting focus.

If those three films were remade, I'd go see them in the theater for the sake of curiousity. I really think it would be a win win situation for SW fans of every type. George could even change the stories as much as he wished in order to "improve them". Ultimately, the originals would still exist, and I could walk away content if they such, and slightly excited if they turn out to be good.

Oh, another film I'd really like to see remade is Daredevil. I think DD is way under rated as a comic book hero. He has always been one of my favorites, and I was excited when I heard they were making a Daredevil movie. I was hoping it would be on par with Spider-Man, but instead it was... unspeakably awful...

Since they have already remade the Hulk (into, from what I understand, another pretty horrible film), I'd really like to see them take DD and restart from scratch without the over the top corniness.

I've heard the Director's Cut of Daredevil is above and beyond higher quality compared to the Theatrical version. But I wouldn't know since I've never seen the Director's Cut yet.

The Wizard of OZ (The book isn't even a musical, c'mon)

Top ten films you desire to see in a movie theatre...

I could write this list forever. How can you only have 10??

Sergio Leone's Westerns (Dollars trilogy/Once Upon a Time in the West/Duck You Sucker) (The Good the Bad and the Ugly would be the original US cut-hate the extended English version)

Every Kubrick film (saw Dr. Strangelove and 2001 in 35mm-want to see 2001 in Cinerama!)

The Star Wars Trilogy. OOT restored if possible-or 97 SE.

Most assuredly the 70mm restoration of Lawrence of Arabia-the most beautiful film ever made. Plus David Lean's other epics Kwai, Dr. Zhivago, and Ryan's Daughter.

The entire Bond series-saw Dr. No and Thunderball as rereleases!

Lots and lots of film noir-Double Indemnity/Ace in the Hole/Detour/Maltese Falcon/Chinatown. Out of the Past is unbelievable in a theater.

The Godfather, but even more so-Apocalypse Now (original).

The Indy trilogy.

Die Hard would be awesome.

The Wild Bunch-with other Peckinpah (Straw Dogs/Alfredo Garcia/Pat Garrett original cut)

THX-1138

These are off top of my head.

Ones I have seen: Blade Runner Final Cut in a theater blew my mind even after numerous viewings over the years. Vertigo is meant to be seen on the big screen-saw a new print of the 1998 restoration and it was phenominal. Would love to see Notorious. Solaris was insane in 35mm-Tarkovsky's vision should only be seen that way. Saw The Good the Bad and the Ugly but was the English extended cut. And of course, my greatest experience is still ANH in 1997.

My local theater is having Flashback Thursdays and later in the month they're having Raiders of the Lost Ark and the Thursday after that, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. No idea why they also didn't get Temple of Doom.

Top Ten Films Of The 21st Century

More than ten also, no particular order: (Although I own three different releases of the first title mentioned)

Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups. I prefer the Director's Cut.)

The Dark Knight

GLADIATOR

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Sort-of also meant to count as one huge long film?)

Infernal Affairs Trilogy (I'm still hunting down the 5-hour chronological 2-Disc of it. I own the imports with full bitrate DTS. Will buy them on Blu-ray shortly)

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (I'm still waiting for the rest of the books to be adapted)

Enemy at the Gates

BLACK HAWK DOWN

House of Flying Daggers (I own the import Edko 2-Disc with full DTS-ES bitrate track. Just wow.)

Fulltime Killer

Catch Me If You Can

Will be edited with more later.

Do Video Games Sometimes have better stories than films ?
Time

The Secret of Monkey Island; Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge; THE DIG (Holy fuck I love this game!); Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis; Grim Fandango (Never got around to completing it even though it's on my game spindle); GHOSTBUSTERS: The Video Game; BioShock; BRADE RUNNAH (1997 Westwood, It rivals the film but I love both equally. I'm still attempting to get all the endings ever since I bought it in 2000.); HALF-LIFE2 and the Episodes; STAR WARS: Knights of the Old Republic (HK-47 = Damn awesome);

Will be edited later.

Nope, the most over-rated film in history would most definitely be The Matrix. Hands down. IMHO, of course.

I'd go with Fight Club, personally.

"Titanic" all the way.

Seconding TITANIC.

Oh. Infernal Affairs Trilogy > The Departed.

I just finished Ghost Busters - man, that was a short game.  Now if only my 20GB-model PS3 (with a 320GB hard drive) had wifi so I could play online ... anyone know if those USB wifi adaptors work with PS3's?

Does your PS3 have an ethernet port onnit? My 360 has one and I just ran another ethernet cable to it via a hub. I missed the Scan, Artifact, Random level and the Professional achievements. It felt like this game was GHOSTBUSTERS III/3! I quite enjoyed it.

Is it me or does it seem like the Vigo painting is voiced by Max von Sydow?
